Great explanation. You could use Crossfit athletes as the case & point to what you're saying. Of course they have other elements to the sport which attribute to their physiques (mainly calisthenics) but really a very high volume of olympic lifting. I think that's why you see a lot of them with well developed shoulders, backs and legs - high volume/high reps doing snatches, cleans, jerks, presses, squats, etc with moderate to heavy weights. The question that this guy asked is kind of like someone saying they have a solid background with powerlifting (SBD) for strength, but don't know if they should use the lifts for hypertrophy/muscle building. Really any type of training should elicit the desired response of muscle building IF that person is training in the proper rep range, with progressive overload. That's why we see jacked guys from disciplines like calisthenics, powerlifting, bodybuilding, gymnastics, strongman, and even just guys who do a lot of lifting without specificity (farmers, lumberjacks, construction workers). Doing anything with a high frequency, high volume, over a long period of time, and progressively overloading will build a solid physique. Don't you think?

I mean look at old school body builders from the 20's to the late 40's. Those guy's were doing both Olympic lifts and bodybuilding and had amazing physiques like the Greek gods but were also just as strong as them too. I hate people who say you have to train a certain way to achieve what you want, it just doesn't make any sense to me. If you want to train Olympic lifts but still want a good V-taper and a nice chest/ arms just isolate them along with your normal routine. Which is why I want to combing Olympic weight lifting and body building like they used to back in the early day's of pumping Iron.

regarding grip strength and olympic lifts--are you still employing hook grip during any oly lift or are there instances where you use a 'normal' grip?
