I love the fact that he leant into being Jewish but made the character sympathetic. The original Fagin as written by Dickens was an anti-Semitic trope. Later in life Dickens had a change of heart and tried to rehabilitate Oliver Twist by re-writing Fagin’s Jewishness out, but it was far too late for that. Keeping it in but ‘changing the plot for him’ - as his other main song ended - was a much cleverer and more narratively interesting move, and Bart and Moody were on the same page there.

Imagine being 10yrs old, watching this at Radio City Music Hall. These boys would've been our peers. I suppose we're still impressed by it. They're obviously naughty but they sound like angels. Like all boys that age so were we, a little good, a little mischievous.

Interesting Oliver! facts: The original London stage show of 1960 is notable for featuring Australian satirist Barry Humphries (Dame Edna Everidge) in his first major stage role as Mr Sowerberry, and future rock stars Steve Marriott (later the lead singer of the Small Faces and Humble Pie), Davy Jones (later star of the Monkees) and Phil Collins (of Genesis fame) as The Artful Dodger. Oliver! composer Lionel Bart hummed the melodies and the music was transcribed by Eric Rogers who wrote the notes on his behalf as Bart could not read or write music. Rogers wrote and composed 21 scores for the British Carry On comedy films, the world's longest series of comedy feature films.

you cabin add American political parties to that statement. ha well the US only has one political party. LIBERAL. Some put a (D) beside their name then when they shame themselves and can no longer win an election they just replace the D with an (R) ..... If they were honest both sides would just put a big fat (L) beside their names. But that'll never happen.

We have a musical jam night at my local pub every week. Everytime somebody famous passes on we pay tribute to them by singing any song they made famous. Lionel Bart wrote this song, but I've just learned it and will play it in tribute to Ron Moody who so brilliantly brought it to life. R.I. P.

I love the song. I love it. The only problem with the message behind it is, is that it was designed for Oliver to pick a pocket, encouraging him down the line of thievary and whilst this is for the benefit of the film and probably most likely what happens in reality somewhere in London... those boys were the master crooks not Oliver because they were careful not to get caught, they either went back empty handed than got nicked. It was never the life for that boy.

I do get what you're saying. But, like many things in life, pickpocketing has different degrees. I have fond memories of my aunt when I hear this song...she had excellent sleight of hand skills, and she'd always sing the chorus of this song whenever she'd slip a wallet or keys out of someone's pocket at a party. Lol It was part of her charm.
