The best rendition of Oliver Twist by many miles. Got 12 Academy Award nominations with 6 wins, Top 100 British movies: # 76. Just love it. Wish they had the complete show rather than just clips on you tube.

@@petercollins1346 The guy who played Dodger and Fagin were tipped to become much bigger after the film but I think I saw an interview with Fagin who stated he wouldn't stay in USA where the work was and returned to UK. Dodger actor had such drinking problems that it hindered his career and while Oliver Reid fared the best his drinking and personality ruined his career too because studios didn't want to work with him. There was a rumour he turned down Jaws but I read somewhere this wasn't true and that they considered him but the studio refused to audition him because of his behaviour and attitude. Lester's films in the 70s flopped and he left the industry.

I saw this as a kid in the theater at about the age of all those orphan boys . the notion that children could be kept in such a barren loveless place and kept hungry was a complete revelation to me as id never known a hungry day in my life. my parents explained that although this story was fictional it WAS based on a time when orphan children were kept in workhouses and forced to work and underfed. this movie entertained me but also terrified me , for how children had been treated but also how brutal the murder of Nancy who was the only person who ever selflessly helped Oliver and was killed for their kindness

living to 84 in the victorian era[1830s book was set in] typical life expectancy was about 45 and that was for the middle class so living to 84 in that time was extreme hyperbole as I don't think anybody would have seen their 60s in that era.

There must be something quite so glorious-and-salubrious in this nearly half-century musical film classic that is simply hard to castigate unfavorably or to segregate undesirably. This 1968 explicitly-sublime big-screen adaptation of Mr Lionel Bart's highly-esteemed best-selling stage musical "Oliver!" has still managed to hold on to its ceaseless sparkle, its fade-less appeal, its guileless quality, and its matchless cinematic-feat - thus keeping the wide-ranging audience staunchly elated and inspirited and to a certain extent deeply-committed to every single awe-inspiring and earth-shattering scene. Here's one of its distinctly engaging and heart-tugging musical segments - featuring the well-tuned vocal back-up of Sir George Thalben-Ball-conducted Temple Choir's choristers. This Sir Carol Reed's well-effectuated theatrical number ( set in the accurately-reconstructed 19th-century poorly-maintained scruffy-and-stuffy dining hall of the workhouse in Dunstable England ) has feasibly-and-plausibly showcased the prime cinematic qualities all rolled into one - Mr Lionel Bart's upbeat song-piece; Ms Onna White's stupendous step-design; Mr John Box / Mr Terence Marsh's in-depth backdrop-designing; Mr Oswald Morris' snappy camera-handling; Ms Phyllis Dalton's well-grounded period-costume designing; and a fine ensemble of dandy-and-handy juvenile actors headed by Mr Mark Lester. The subject matter of this Oscar-winning masterpiece - "corrupting-and-exploiting the defenseless-and-penniless adolescents / the underprivileged" - does still exist in the present time at no fault of their own. There's nothing to stop us from getting a thrill when we all close our eyes and imagine - this truly enthralling and mind-boggling musical gem.
