I once was a hungry orphan

Hard to believe, but poor houses, orphanages and schools for poor or low income children in 17th and 18th century England used to actually be this awful. The early chapters of Charlotte Bronte's *Jane Eyre* feature a charity school for girls (paid for by philanthropists but very badly managed) that was always damp and never warm enough (in winter time, the water they were supposed to wash their hands and faces with would be frozen solid in the basins) with cheap clothing that was not sufficient to keep them warm, and a near-starvation diet. Some of the older girls would snatch bits of food away from the littler ones. The school was drawn from life. The author attended it as a child, and her two elder sisters died there. The school was closed in scandal when an epidemic revealed how bad conditions had been.

Very extreme poverty exists, and also nations where the government can't or won't help the poor in an adequate way, etc (indeed, compared to fully industrialized nations, the US is behind and has some issues on that point) but I'm not aware of that particular form anywhere...it still exists?

Every element in this scene is excellent: sets, choreography, costumes, songs, acting. They're all perfectly synchronized. Doubtless "Pink Floyd - The Wall" was inspired by this.

When I first heard this, I thought “Hey, it’s that song from Ice Age: The Meltdown”

My school brought me here, were doing a play and we ALL have to sing and dance (we also have some solo parts) since us year 6 kids are going to secondary school.

I remember 3 years ago when me and all my classmates were swinging bowls everywhere and singing this song-

Love this song! The kids nailed it! For years I have been trying to find a website or more information, with the names of all the kids in the dining hall who sang this song! It would be cool to get those who participated for a reunion to reflect their memories of filming this scene!

I performed this back in like 3rd grade for my music class. I sang and danced along with my Broadway Kids tape. This, Sound of Music, and Fiddler on the Roof was my first exposure to musical theater.
