SAN FRANCISCO - Welcome to the beautiful city of San Francisco, California on the west coast of the United States. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the US and it has a rich history of food. Today, we’re going on a classic, heritage food tour of San Francisco, where we’re going to eat at some of the oldest and best restaurants in the city. We’ll be eating huge amounts of cioppino, a fisher’s seafood stew that was invented in San Francisco!
Again, thank you to Visit California for sponsoring my trip.

Facebook: / visitcalifornia
Swan Oyster Depot (goo.gl/maps/Z8ggEVypMWY7pAyX7) Total price - $109.50 - First up on this food tour we headed to the legendary Swan Oyster Depot, easily one of the top restaurants I was looking forward to eating at in all of SF. It’s like taking a step back in time from the moment you step in. It’s all seafood bar counter style, fresh, and whatever is in season. I tried a bunch of different dishes, including a Crab Louie (another dish invented in San Francisco), plus smoked salmon on sourdough, chowder, shrimp cocktail, Sicilian sashimi, and crab backs. What a meal and what a way to start off this ultimate San Francisco food tour.
Sotto Mare (goo.gl/maps/ZKvJcnWGzYYMqYFG6) - Next we headed over to Sotto Mare, an Italian American restaurant serving seafood and local dishes. Among their list of dishes, no one goes to Sotto Mare without ordering their cioppino, an Italian American seafood medley with tomatoes and white wine and plenty of garlic. It’s the signature dish of San Francisco, and you can’t visit without trying it.
Anchor Oyster Bar (goo.gl/maps/11JCpCf8g8rv6kJt6) - Total price - $136.29 - One of my personal favorite restaurants in San Francisco is Anchor Oyster Bar, where they again specialize in both oysters and cioppino. I ordered a nice tray of oysters to begin with, and finished with a huge bowl of cioppino. To me, this is the gold standard - a beautiful tomato broth that’s not too heavy and not too light, accented with herbs and spices, and a huge variety of seafood. An amazing meal.
Tadich Grill (g.page/TadichGrill?share) - Total price - $129.26 - Finally to complete this San Francisco food tour we headed to Tadich Grill in downtown. Dating back to 1849, it’s not only the oldest restaurant in SF, but the oldest restaurant in California! It’s absolutely classic from the moment you walk in, huge wooden bar counter, high saloon style ceiling, and waiters in white coats. I tried a number of dishes including, you guessed it - cioppino. But the real winner here for me were the local sand dabs.
And that wraps up this ultimate food tour in San Francisco!

Tadich Grill and Alioto's are definitely on my list of restaurants to go toand have Cippino. My mom used to talk about how much she loved going to Alioto's for Cippino when she lived with my grandmother in San Mateo back in the early 70's. Unfortunately, we never got the chance to experience Alioto's

In my time in business in SF I have enjoyed Tich Grill for dinner. But as you see in the video, it is a great place for an earlyish dinner before a game, a show or the commute. The sheer history of the place is amazing, the vintage staff makes you wonder if there is still an original employee hiding somewhere, but that can't be true. Another seafood gem nearby and a peer in the longevity ranks is Sam's, Similar Dalmatian ancestry and great food. Many tables in old school booths with curtains, no less. Look it up or ask your Concierge.

Glad to view this! SF is my birthplace and current home. Mark, it's great fun to see you dig in, savor, enjoy, and describe -- with your eyes wide open -- your gastronomical adventures! The SF seafood tour here is a scrumptious tribute to one of The City's renowned highlights. I got so full just watching you luxuriate and swoon with each scoop... I vicariously feasted along -- even nearly licking this device's screen. Yes, sourdough bread (the mother culture dough having been transported to safety during the 1906 Earthquake and Fire), cioppino, Dungeness crab, sand dabs, mussels, clams, oysters, scallops, shrimp, prawns, calamari, various fish and sashimi, Caesar salad, clam chowder, spaghetti, tomato broth/sauce or soup, vegetables, rice, garlic, coarse-grind black pepper, horseradish, hot sauce, lemon, capers, onions, bay leaves, tartar sauce, bibs, paper towels, moist wipes, warm hospitality, etc. -- you got the works and did a concise grand tour. Enticing narrative, editing, pacing, sampling, and photography. Commendable endorsement of some of SF's culinary glories. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thank you for being an enthusiastic ambassador of fun dining wherever you are. 🗺️🍽️🍔🥣🍜🍵🥗🍝

Because of Marks video, my husband and I went to the Swan Oyster depot today 12/15/2021. I don’t know about the pricing that they gave Mark but ours was way more expensive and food portions were smaller: Crab Louie for $38, one cup ( not bowl) of clam chowder for $8.00, and one medium order of shashimi ( 20 tiny slivers of fish and scallops) in a saucer plate. Our total bill was $94 which includes tax. We gave $120 to include tip as the server was nice. We didn’t want to haggle at the price which were way different than the posted ones. We also noticed that the food preparers were not using gloves at all😩. What they presented Mark will not be the same if you’re just a regular customer. Food was ok, edible, but I know I will not be coming back to this place anymore.

Used to go clamming alot there, and when I see fresh seafood, it reminds me of home. Just the way they are all about the food, all the hard work, its old school, which reminds me of places back home. In 2014, I was in SF for the VM World conference but skipped the last day to make the pilgrimage to the legendary Swan Oyster Depot. I was 2nd in line waited for an hour before they opened up. I sat in the same spot where Anthony Bourdain sat, literally elbow to elbow with fellow customers. I kept ordering everything they recommended for 2 hours and spent $168. Totally worth it for the bucket list seafood experience and skipping out on the nerd-fest conference. So happy to see this and reminisce.

What a treasure your great grandfather was. My own grandfather first took me to Tadich Grill in 1962 (I was 7 years old) and I remember him ordering the sand dabs. Well as a young man in my early 20's my first job was delivering beer in the City, and I delivered beer to Tadich many times. Fast forward to 2015. I took my 2 grown kids (both born in SF) to Tadich Grill. We shared a large Dungeness crab Louie with extra crab legs, I had the sand dabs, my daughter had the crab cioppino, and my son had the NY steak. With a couple of drinks & the tip, the bill was $300 bucks. And l'll never regret spending that much, because you can't replace the history or the memories. Thank you sir for your great grandfather. He made San Francisco proud!!!!!!!!

Have seen Mark's travel/food videos before and am glad he visited my hometown, focusing on our (dwindling) seafood and sourdough bread, visiting our landmark restaurants, while totally ignoring our trendy locavore/fusion establishments. He doesn't comment much about the neighborhoods, but at least shots of rainbow gay pride flags on Castro Street were shown when he visited Anchor Oyster Bar. The comparison of Cioppinos from several places was a scream. So expensive now. I make my own in a crock pot with fresh seafood gathered from a shop on Mission Street, just like Mom did in the 1960's - 1970's. My Dad routinely had three-Martini business lunches at Tadich Grill. Glad Mark showcased our local sand abs, which brought back childhood memories of my Mom carefully de-boning them for me, just as his waiter did. This clip was delightful to watch.
