When people care so much about a 5th century law they give the throne to a 10th cousin once removed instead of a sister.

The throne would not have gone to Isabella, the potential heir was her son Edward III. This was all just politics. Philippe V argued against women inheriting the crown to prevent the daughters of Louis X from getting it (so that HE would become king). This ended up excluding his own daughters and nieces from the succession when the family ran out of men... Then they had to use the Salic law to justify that women couldn't even transfer the right to the crown to their sons, just to keep the king of England away from the French throne. The legal argument was very flimsy (making a convenient interpretation of a law that had been ignored for ages at that point) and everybody knew it.

Families were trace through male it’s just like they are today. If you put a female on the throne and she has offspring they will take the name of their father those jeopardizing the control of the current house over its country. If a female goes to the throne you basically extinct the line. Just basically killing all future generations with the same surname

@@cv4809 The French 'Louis' and German 'Ludwig' are both derived from the same Germanic name, 'Hludwig', meaning 'famous warrior' or something like that. The reason for the difference is that Hludwig, when used by Franks, could also be rendered as 'Chlodowig', which eventually turns into 'Clovis', and from that into 'Louis', whereas Germans, in a somewhat stereotypical display of efficiency, simply turned 'Hludwig' into 'Ludwig'. In this sense, 'Louis' and 'Ludwig' are definitely related, but one didn't really spring from the other. Compare to 'Lewis' in English, derived right from the French 'Louis', also part of this fun little family.

at 3:39, Louis I wasn't in fact the original Louis - that is the Frankified version of the name Clovis, one of the earliest rulers of Frankia. So in fact all subsequent Louis are named for Clovis.

Charlemagne is NOT considered as the first French monarch. He is one of the most illustrious monarch in the history of France but the first one is Clovis. The House of France and the monarchy has been founded by Clovis. Most of French Kings have to be sacred at Reims to be legitimated, in reference to Clovis as it was the place he was baptized

@@twahaalim5712 he's wrong, the first king of France is Clovis, his ancesters only being frankish kings. It is by his baptism and the dedication of France to catholicism that he became first king of France. The french monarchy is catholic and all French monarchs must be crowned by the church to be considered Kings of France.

Excellent video, just one thing bothered me : the first king of France isn't Charlemagne, whose father Pépin Le Bref was also king of France, but Clovis I, founder of the merovingian french dynasty. He is considered the first king of France since he brought us our oldest national cultural aspect : catholicism. Also, the oldest title which is currently possessed by France is the title of elder daughter of the Church which was given to Clovis' kingdom the day of his baptism, the 25 of décembre, 496. In all of France, in our national history we consider Clovis' baptism as the birthday of France.
