    Been a bit, huh? Yeah so the last couple months have been crazy busy with real-life stuff, and that sucked. Had to get my license and a bunch of other shenanigans like that. (I also was working on a non-KZread related project as well which will take a while to be revealed.) Regardless, I tried to make this one the best I could. Figured a 40-minute behemoth would be a decent return. Paper Mario 64 will take a bit, but I'll have a different video out before it. Anyways, have a nice day! =D

    If a sequel or remaster ever did happen, I would love to see Luigi with an expanded role, and there's three possible scenarios for that I would be happy with; 1. Have him be an NPC who gives you a helpful item every now and then when you talk to him. 2. Make him an optional party member you can recruit after completing some sort of sidequest. Or 3. In terms of handling it in the same vein as the Mario and Luigi 3DS remakes, include an additional story with him as the lead, forming his own team and going on a different adventure entirely. In which case, I know the perfect team. Luigi himself would obviously be the middle man, being around average in all stats, Professor E. Gadd could be the medic, using different kinds of new gadgets for healing and inflicting statuses, Daisy could be like Tifa Lockhart, being very strong and fast on her feet... and I admittedly haven't thought of what Waluigi or King Boo would specialize in, but I liked this set up, because they're all characters more associated with Luigi than Mario, and it could give some love to some of the most underutilized characters in the whole franchise. Like I know this is all just hypothetical, but seriously, how cool would a side story like this be, if it were to happen?

  • @TheJadeFist

    @TheJadeFist

    They would have to replace Ultima/ Culex fight for a more Mario themed boss. One of the easter eggs and also an event that required some seriously cryptic bs chain of events to trigger and you could fail permanently on a save file to do something at the time right time early on and not even know you screwed yourself out of the boss fight.

    Very cool to come across this. It’s interesting to me hearing the perspective of those who didn’t grow up with this game and came to it with some characterization of the Mario universe in mind. I remember getting this game just before my 7th birthday in 1996. I was a HUGE Mario fan because of 3 & World and the cartoon series. This was such a cool and unique experience because, as you mentioned, this world barely had characterization up until this point. Thanks for this. Really enjoyed it

    It's awesome that we share almost exact sentiments regarding this game. I'll be turning 33 this year and played this game when I was 8 years old. Growing up and playing this was very tough for me too, difficulty-wise, that is. I ended up understanding certain mechanics after a few more tries (like the forest maze star boss) but others--such as the 3D puzzle on the ship that you mentioned--I also struggled with that vehemently! What fond, and also, ardently-fueled memories you have stirred within me. Thanks for such a great retrospective of one of my all-time favourites SNES games!

    Awesome video, brought back memories of playing it around when it first came out. This game was my first RPG I've ever played and I was bad at it. Such as never upgrading equips because I thought it would change the character's looks so the battles became harder as I progressed through the game. I was also obsessed with it for probably a few years too and would draw the characters (or try to). Kind of wished I had time to play RPGs but unfortunately I cannot put a lot time into gaming nowadays. :/

    Dude I feel you on that last comment. Having a full time job + KZread + personal projects makes it more difficult to play. Regardless I persist because I still love playing them. • @AnimatronicBadgerlord

    I was actually a kid when this first came out. I was gifted this for Xmas on year because my parents knew I liked Mario (They had no idea what this was other than "A Mario game") and bless them for trying! It was my first RPG, and I had no idea what was going on I was 9. But It kept my interest and I remember loving the game back then. The idea that Bowser was on your side for once always fascinated me, painting him as not so much a villain so much as a Rival. To Echo your thoughts, That 3D Maze can stay in the depths of hell where it belongs. I could NEVER beat it back then, and I wasn't smart enough as a kid to solve the puzzle so I actually had my dad help me. To this day it remains one of my favorite memories as he guided me towards the answer as opposed to just telling me. Still, screw that maze. Then right after that you fight Yaridovich and I still have nightmarish flashbacks to Water Blast. Like I said... I was young. And dumb. I put all my stats into HP cause I thought More HP meant I live longer and therefor win! Yeah... no This is a game I just adore. I will play through it every year for fun, It's not too long as you pointed out and I can finish it in 10 or so hours, maybe a bit more if I'm going after Culex. My most recent playthrough was more of a challenge run. I wanted to see what would happen if I didn't use Peach at all. She was never allowed in my party just because of how broken that healing is. It ended up being Mario, Bowser and Mallow this time around. A combination I've never done and it made the game far more interesting. Having to actually stock up on Status recovery items, Trueform Pins, etc... just to make sure that we could fight without the magic of Peach's healing was a real interesting way to play. And the reason for Bowser is cause I'm just a Bowser Fanboy. I make no attempts to hide that. He's the worst character stat wise for sure. But I mean... come on... He throws Mario as a weapon. That's just hilarious. Loved the video mate. Gave me endless waves on Nostalgia, and got the Forest Maze song stuck in my head. Again. It has permanent residence in there at this point. Truly a shame we never got more in this franchise... but at the same time... maybe oversaturating us with it would have been to it's detriment. We can only guess. Now If you will excuse me I need to go listen to it's OST again... Do do do do do, dooo do, do, doooooo

    To my knowledge this is the Mario game that I think the main villain took a back row seat throughout most of the game. Heck you don't even meet the guy in person until the very end of the game. And even then you really don't fight his minions all that much. Usually you fight what I consider arc villains and a lot of these arc villains go through development. Sure you could say all the chaos caused by the gang encouraged an increase in crime which led to these other lesser bad guys to rise up but directly they have no connection to the main enemy group at all. Croco is a thief, Booster is just an insane loner who kidnaps princesses, Valentina is a usurper for power, Johnny is a pirate. The list goes on. None of these villains have any connection to the gang. Heck all the ones I just mentioned go through some sort of redemption arc. However there are others who aren't so lucky such as the bomb dude who gets flattened by his own explosive in a comedic way. I feel by World 7 the game realizes that not much was going on with the Smithy Gang itself and it's like "Oh right. The main bad guys. We need to stop them." and then the final 2 levels Bowser's Castle and The Weapons Factory become completely devoted to fighting the Smithy Gang.

    I think smithy (and gang) being unremarkable characters is kind of the point. They are placed in contrast to booster, croco, Valentina and the rest of the cast (which are very colorful, lively, eccentric and distinct) to elevate them. They represent an alien threat to Mario’s world, intent on filling it with weapons and taking away their dreams. The factory level itself is presented as colorless, boring. Even its music is unremarkable. It’s basically the opposite of fun. Your mission as the player is to cast them out so that Mario’s world can continue to be the vibrant place it is

    Not to say some smithy gang characters (like the Axem rangers) don’t have their charm P.S. I’m fairly sure punchinello isn’t part of the gang. IIRC his battle music is the one they use for non smithy bosses (i.e. croco)

    A fantastic review to be sure. Though I have to say, I never understood why people like Geno so much. He has a cool design, sure, but he has no personality whatsoever. Mallow is probably my favorite thing about this whole game. He is a defined character with a memorable personality, an emotional resolution and some real character development, something that almost never happens in Mario RPG's. His development is straightforward and simple, but I think it works really well for a Mario game. Basically, Mallow is memorable to me in a way that Geno simply isn't.

  • @DuoStuff

    @DuoStuff

    3 жыл бұрын

    I guess that's fair. Honestly though, I think it is partially the design and concept behind Geno that makes him stand out. There really aren't many characters designed like him, especially in the Mario series. I also kind of appreciate the no-nonsense serious thing he's got going on. It makes him feel cool in a way Mario characters usually aren't. But that's just me. I do like Mallow, and I appreciate that he's actually got an actual character arc, but said arc just doesn't do anything for me. I can't really explain it much more than that. Regardless, glad you enjoyed the video. =D

    Very close to my own story. That Newgrounds animation made me want to play it. So I bought an FC3+ that could play NES, SNES and Genesis games. When I finally found a Mario RPG cartridge I was so excited... And it didn't work. Turns out it used a special chip that made it one of the only SNES games the FC3+ couldn't run! (I did find some other SNES games at garage sales to play on it. So A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Mario All-Stars being part of my life were, in a way, all because I originally just wanted to try Mario RPG 😂 Later in my college days I was so excited when it was released on the Wii. Very much enjoyed it, especially since it was almost a mythical game in my imagination at that point.

    Fun fact, (I think) Most older Super Mario RPG fans believe that Peach and Bowser's stats were accidently swapped. Peach is the only character in the game who can max out her HP at 255.. Leaving a ridiculously broken Peach character and a fairly weak Bowser character.

    On the simplicity - bear in mind this was meant to be baby's first RPG. As an introduction to the genre as it was in 1996, it served that purpose beautifully. The game rewarded those who got the hang of its systems, but for the ones who never did, the difficulty was tuned so it was hard but still beatable. This game was actually fairly challenging for me when I first played it. Today I can time my button presses in my sleep. Back then, I got better with the battle system as I moved through the game, but I never mastered it on my first playthrough. I think that's the genius of its design - yes, it leaves you wanting something a bit beefier once you've nailed it down, but the amount of complexity it offers is entirely manageable if you aren't at all familiar with RPGs going into it. Since the game moves at such a snappy pace and it ends before it can overstay its welcome, a first-time player will likely complete their first playthrough without discovering all the subtleties and nuances of the tools they have available. I'd played through the game several times before I learned the timing on Geno Whirl. Hell, I never knew you could one shot the boss before the final area with it until I watched this video. And on the level ups - it's fair that you don't have much customization, but just because there are bonus stats available on one choice per level up it doesn't always make it the best option. There's really no point in taking extra magic stats for Bowser. His magic defense will always be lackluster and his specials are barely worth using. Likewise for Peach with her physical stats, especially if you put the Lazy Shell on her. Really, most of the customization comes down to the accessories and ridiculously overpowered equipment you can get in the late game. I'm okay with this considering that, again, it was meant to be an introduction to the genre for most of its players. However, as much as I prefer this game to the Paper Mario series, I think those games do a good job of offering some options without overloading the player with choice. All in all, I love this game to death, and it pleases me to no end people are still picking it up and giving it a go nearly 30 years on.

Nothing looked this good. There were drawings and manuals and woaaahhh.... compare to Final Fantasy 3/6 and Mario World. and realize that 3d pre-rendered graphics were so popular back then that Sonic the Hedgehog specifically had that look Fighting games not so much.. Ninja Turtles or Streets of Rage 2 (beatemups) were less repetitive than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.. which most people played because they thought there was a nudality code.

I was aware of the game when it came out, but I didn't really get to play it until years later. I did a borrow trade for the game at some point well into the gamecube era, I gave them Star Fox (snes) to borrow and they gave me Super Mario RPG, they never returned my copy of Star Fox, so to this day I still have their copy of Super Mario RPG. Considering the price of the games now, with Super Mario RPG being the more expensive game to get a hold of, I think I walked away from that trade better off.

    I always consider Super Mario RPG kind of a Paper Mario 0 in a way. It was setting the foundation for future Paper Mario games which would focus more on strategy based aspects and puzzles as opposed to the more action oriented M&L games. Heck that seemed to be intentional as during it's beta development Paper Mario 64 was originally called Super Mario RPG 2.

Super Mario RPG sold around 200k in a couple months, which was *shocking* at the time, so that should put into perspective just how popular JRPGs were in the west.
