I don't agree about the graphics. It was the flashiest graphics at the time. In fact, that was why I initially rented it (before buying it outright). I wanted a 3D Mario game. And then I was blown away by how the story was different, and how much fun it was to play a game I could do well in (since it didn't require the fast reflexes I never had). It opened a whole new world of gaming to me, but I never would have checked it out if not for the graphics.

Smrpg was my very first rpg ever. I had played donkey Kong country 1 and 2 and Mario all stars and even some fighting games before it. But I saw what RPGs we're with Mario rpg and it changes my view forever. My new favorite genre at maybe 6-8 years old. I don't remember. The first time I rented it I loaded someone else's data and had no idea what to do at all even a little bit. The second time I rented it I started a new game and didn't know to press A to talk to things and people to start conversations. Once I figured that out wow I realized what a great game I had. I loved it and kept hoping there would be a way to continue after beating smithy but it never could haha. Years later my next game was Pokemon blue and it was great too at the time. So RPGs we're forever my favorite and always will be. But I wished I had kept my SNES and experienced more RPGs on the console back when I was a kid like Chrono trigger and ff4 and 6. But oh well I still enjoyed those games years later at least

Honestly, I agree with this. I think at this point, Square Enix should sell the rights of the Super Mario RPG characters to Nintendo just so those characters could get proper representation. Square Enix literally have no use for those characters, and for the past ~25 years there hasn’t been a single game they’ve developed or produced where a Super Mario RPG gets at least a cameo. At least with Paper Mario, the characters from that game would go on to make a few appearances in other series like Mario Party, and even the Goomba King (albeit renamed as Goomboss) went as far as making an appearance in mainstream games like Super Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS. It’s not many appearances, and in recent years the references have waned, but it’s a hell of a lot better than almost none. Even before AlphaDream went bankrupt and had the rights to the Mario & Luigi characters, they would have their original characters in 6 out of the 7 entries, so most characters weren’t left in the dust for a decade. AlphaDream were also the only ones who gave Geno a cameo outside of Smash in Superstar Saga, and even then they had to get rid of the cameo in the remake because either they couldn’t afford the rights or Square Enix wouldn’t allow them to add the cameo again. Modern Nintendo aren’t the best at keeping the legacy of a few popular Mario characters (they’ve had to rely on Next Level Games and Retro Studios in keeping E. Gadd and Cranky Kong alive respectively, and King K. Rool being brought back by Sakurai was a miracle), but I think they would do a slightly better job than Square Enix. At best, we could see Mallow and Geno make playable appearances in Mario spin-offs, or see the Mushroom Kingdom populated by various friendly species besides just Toads, and at worst Nintendo can’t do the characters as bad as Square Enix has already treated them.

I guess Nintendo didn't want to go through the hassle of licensing for Geno fore one obscure cameo.

(Imagine how confused I was seeing Geno in Superstar Saga) However, when I finally get around to play it, I was completely engaged. Not only that but this game and Super Mario 64 would introduced many things that would become staples of the universe. It shows that the stars can be more than just something that makes the plumber invincible, introduced Star Hill and Star beings, the first to showcase Mario having fire powers and capable of throwing hands, Peach having heart and healing magic, the first of many Bowser’s unwilling alliances with Mario, etc. This game is truly a gem in the SNES and I’m glad I got to experience it myself. This was the only game I had that I made sure to replay each year after school had ended-it was my only gaming tradition. The replay-ability of it is such that as soon as you’re done with the game, you can start it up and start over from the beginning. Not many games are like that. When I finished Mother 3 for the first time, I didn’t want to instantly replay it even though it’s such a fantastic game. It’s been 3 years since then and I still haven’t replayed it because I’m content with that. The story is so heavy and game is so long that the player really deserves time to let it fester. Mario RPG though? I could replay the entire thing right now if I wanted to. I love this game.

I got a chromebook for my birthday and being really happy. I don't know how, but I found an emulator, and that was the first game I played on it. I played dit multiple times thanks to my dad closing all my tabs, letting the save be gone, but that helped my like the game more with knowing how to play it and already being comfy with the controls, made me have a better time replaying it than my first 5 hours. I've only played the game for such a short time and only a couple playthroughs, but somehow I somehow feel nostalgic for this game. Its so nice and fun that it feels like it's been with me since I was little. Thats how good this game is. Thanks for reading my rant about this lol.

I didn't understand english back then, so the story kind of flew over my head, though I did have a general understanding of the situation. The game is very... "visual" in its storytelling. The game was very fun even when I didn't understand half of what was happening. I finished it later in a spanish translated ROM and with a guide to unlock that cool hidden boss. The concept of having a bad guy join you against the badder guys was very cool and impressive for little old me, and still kind of is if executed properly. I distinctly remember playing this game with my old friend who lived a few houses down the street. For six years (until my family moved), we were pretty much at each other's houses every day after school. My family had rented the game for the week and every day after school we'd play - usually at my house because he didn't have a TV in his room where he could play uninterrupted. On the last day we had the game, he wasn't available to come over until later in the evening so he told me to get a head-start in the afternoon (we were at the numbered doors in Bowser's castle before entering Smithy's lair) and he'll swing by later. Time was of the essence. I got on a REALLY good run despite being under-leveled as hell and actually beat Smithy before he could come over... I put the controller down and turned the TV off when Smithy started his final dialogue and waited almost TWO HOURS for my friend so we could experience the ending together. It was agonizing because I was so relieved to finish it before the game had to be returned but I knew he'd appreciate it. I remember us leaving a note in the inside flap of the plastic case that told future renters where to find the most game-breaking accessory: the Safety Ring (which reduces all magic damage to 0 and prevents insta-kills). My friend noticed a tiny gap in the barrels in the final room of the Sunken Ship before reaching the staircase to Johnny's den... I kept brushing him off by saying he was seeing things, until he grabbed the controller and actually walked behind the barrels where he saw the window on a door. We laughed so hard lol. The memories I have of this game, let me tell you... Thanks for this video.

Thank you for this video this means so much to me. I also receive the game for Christmas 1996. My month helped me play a little and got us to the end (I was 6). I don’t think I’ve ever received a new video game for Christmas (other than game boy), and this was right before the n64 took center stage. Ah I could go on for eons, thank you for taking the time to make this content!

One of the greatest games ever. I remember sitting around the tv with my brother and my mom watching her play this when I was 6 years old. Then playing it later on. Even being 30 now this game doesn’t get old. It’s pure joy, genius and a wonderful experience. Between this and earthbound… the greatest rpg games to play.

This is one of my favorite games ever. I didn’t have an SNES growing up. Heck, I graduated high school in ‘96 and video games weren’t on my radar all that much. I finally played this gem on the Wii Virtual Console. This was a Mario game I could actually play and even win. It was fun to be able to be some different characters than our favorite plumber. Seeing Bowser cry still cracks me up every time I see it. I’d love to play it again and, even though it’s quite unlikely, hope it will be added to Nintendo Switch Online one day.

I love how they really give Bowser some true personality in this game… he stops being just a mindless bad guy, and starts being almost a sort of anti-villain who never *really* hurts anyone (which then shows how bad Smithy is, who is willing to cover the world in deadly sharp things just because) and who also turns out to not really have any trouble teaming up with Mario, even if he does complain a whole bunch. A sharp contrast to a lot of video game villains during that period who were all “BWA HA HA” and nothing more. And that personality trend with him has stuck ever since (not that the Mario games are 100% consistent about it though). Also there’s the overall tone & feel of the game. The series was always whimsical, but… that moment with Exor dropping through a stormy sky into the castle? The series had never seen anything even remotely like that, and it added this almost…epic & a little dark feel to it, letting you know the adventure was going to be way bigger than usual. It wasn’t JUST Bowser being irritating this time, now there was a genuine danger threatening everyone and Mario alone couldn’t stop it. My only real disappointment is that we never see most of those characters again.

I love this because I was a baby gamer when I first played this game, borrowed from my older brother. I wasn’t good at video games, I didn’t stand a chance to beat a Mario bros game and really my video game experiences up to that point (at about age 9) we’re watching my 17 year old brother play Tomb Raider II, Resident Evil 2 and knowing I was way too scared to play it myself and getting my ass handed to me in MK Trilogy. Video games were “cool” to me but I couldn’t actually play them. Until this, this was the game I “got” and I beat it, this was the first game I ever beat and it taught me that I’m an RPG fan. From here I beat Final Fantasy IX and then Final Fantasy VIII, X, and VII and have been a massive FF fan since. It’s all thanks to this brilliant collaboration between Nintendo and Square. Timeless game indeed.

I remember when I first played it I was lucky enough to go into it cold having not seen any advertisements or anything, I had rented it and didn't know anything about it other than it was Mario. Mind blown! I find some of the best experiences can be ones going in cold not knowing what to expect and then find a gem like this.

Love this game! What you were saying at the beggining of the game about nostalgia. Well I think nostalgia really forms when you're a teenager. I was born in 1987 so yes im very nostalgic for a lot of things from the 90s. But I feel when I was a teenager I was more aware of my surroundings and could think deeper on things. For example. While Pokemon gold and silver is a better game than red and blue. I'm more nostalgic for it because I was 13 vs 11 where I could see things for more than what they were

Super Mario RPG is my favorite game of all time. I don't think it's the best game ever made, but it sits in my personal #1 spot for pretty much all the reasons you listed. My parents bought me the game when I was 7 or 8 years old after seeing my older friend play it. Soon after that I started saving up change, then asked my dad to take me to Toys R Us so I could buy the official SMRPG strategy guide with my own money, which you can actually see in my avatar (not planned I swear). From the opening Bowser fight to the closing credits, this game has provided me with enough nostalgia for the rest of my days, and hopefully for generations to come. Thank you for putting together and sharing this love letter to SMRPG. Well done. 🙏

Got a snes for my 11th birthday after having just moved from a different state. Pitfall, top gear, and smrpg were the 3 games i got with it. I played countless runs of the game and made the stupid mistake of selling my snes and the games once i got into more modern consoles like the ps2. Once i became an adult i lost my mind over seeing it on the wii shop and today it remains one of the sole reasons i keep my wii around. Especially since the wii shop was closed a few years ago. Definitely one of my favorite nostalgic games of all time.

SMRPG is such a nostalgia trip for me. I've played it so many times, I can't even count them, I know it inside and out. It was pretty clearly designed for the younger set as a gateway game into the RPG genre, and I think it nails it pretty well, but I don't know how strongly I'd recommend it to an RPG vet. Maybe just for the novelty, but it is a little simplistic, both in its narrative and its gameplay.

This is my childhood game too. But on a recent replay of it I had this idea of what if Geno was the true villain of the story and Smithy was a red herring? Wouldn't that be the coolest plot twist? I mean, Geno is pretty mysterious. When he's introduced the characters just take his word for it that he's on their side. He could have been the true leader of the Smithy Gang all along in your party only to be revealed once all the stars are collected. Or he's rouge and is working both sides to obtain the stars.

You're right that first of all the game is fun, but the story, dialogue, and music brought depth that were unheard of in the Mario universe. It kinda elevated Mario from hero to legend. It was exactly what I needed when I first played it at age 11, even though I struggled with the gameplay, took forever to master the timed hits and blocks, overlooked even basic weapon upgrades, and often missed cues that caused me to get stuck for days. I still faithfully rented it every weekend until finally getting it for my birthday. A few weeks later I finally finished it, and the beautiful end credits totally captivated me. It had the vibe like this could be the last Mario game ever made, and I would have been ok with it.

I love this game so much. I got it when it came out at about 9 years old, and I didn't know what an RPG was and I was mad as hell that it wasn't a traditional Mario game... Until I kept playing it... I laughed out loud at Bowser. I literally cried at Luigi's wish. I felt pride reuniting Mallow with his family even though I hadn't had him in the party since getting Toadstool... I found a kid who gave me his Gameboy and got a high score on the game within the game... I felt the targeted joy of a 90s kid seeing an obvious call to the Power Rangers (cuz who in america knew about Super Sentai back then?)... I got absolutely destroyed by Culex until I really learned how to play the game... And when those last fireworks went off, and the music box plays the "lullaby" version of the original Mario theme.... I knew I had finished one of the greatest games of all time. So many people love this game for a reason, and it's a must-play. This was a beautiful video, thank you for all the hard work that went into it!
