The characters actually being developed and memorable started with Link’s Awakening, oddly enough because the developers really liked the quirky ensemble idea they saw in Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks was a huge hit in Japan and the folks working on Awakening were very influenced by the weird characters and dream worlds and surreal logic of it all. Since then Zelda games have a lot more character to them. Link to the Past got the gameplay right but it was just before they realized how rewarding it could be to incorporate better characters into the games.

  • @DuoStuff

19:15 I think the concept of 3 Triforce holders started in Ocarina of Time. In this game's backstory, Ganondorf seized the entire Triforce, made his wish on it, and became Ganon. Since the Triforce will not recognize a new owner until its old owner is destroyed, it pretty much means you have to kill Ganon in order to claim it. Makes the narrative simpler, that's for sure.

Great video! I really enjoyed the way you went about this critique. You have developed a very even-handed approach to juxtaposing between the modern critique while incorporating how the game actually improved on and vastly updated some of the game mechanics, layout, story etc. What I enjoyed the most was actually listening to how you went through this game first. I was about 9 years old when I originally played this game and I had forgotten about the townsfolk running away from Link right after he first saves Zelda from the castle. Every time I play it now I know exactly where Sahasrahla is, so I just go right to him. There are actually several sections in this game like that where I had forgotten how cool it was to explore the area till you brought it up, like the Lost Woods with the fake swords or the Zora area. Oftentimes, when I am playing now I don't even see the ledges with the heart container teasing me because I never go in that cave or in that door, and I just get the heart piece through the secret entrance or whatnot and continue on with the game. But, remembering back, stuff like that is the very reason why I loved this game in the first place before it ever just nestled into the nostalgia side of my brain. I have seen several reviews of this title and not a single one of them ever mentioned that, so thank you for your wonderful perspective there! The one thing I want to comment on is that I think one of the things you don't like about the game is something that is just a remnant of old games. Back in the Atari days we had ZERO stories, we had to make them up in our heads. And we did. Most kids could give you some story they made up on why the ball is being hit by the bar which breaks the blocks. It was like we were all part of the creative process. As NES came in and started developing actual stories to accompany the game that job was steadily taken over by the developers to the point now where the cut scene portions of games are movies, or even multiple movies, in length by themselves. Zelda games follow this exact progression: LOZ has minimal story, Zelda 2 has a little more story, ALTTP is a big jump but not nearly what OOT or Link's Awakening would deliver. And I completely understand your point, and you are totally correct. The story in ALTTP is not really that great. The characters kind of suck, no one is super interesting. The townspeople are kind of lame. I always liked the dwarves the best, I really wanted them to come back in future games, but sadly they never have. But, if you look at the total story dialogue for the whole game it's probably about a page or two of written text. Compared to other later games, you could get that much story off one tablet in BOTW, which is sometimes criticized for it's lack of story. However, I still remember being so incredibly intrigued by what the Maidens tell Link at the end of each Dark World dungeon. That was my favorite part of the game when I was a kid, which even I find hard to believe now. But, in the end, I think you are completely correct. As an avid Zelda gamer, you have done all of this stuff before. It's like playing a bad port or a 2d remake of a really great modern game. I have always suggested for younger gamers to start at ALTTP, but maybe I should amend that recommendation and go with Link's Awakening instead. Thanks again for terrific content. I hope bygones can be bygones. :-)

Glad to see you enjoyed this one. My approach this time was to try and be a little more balanced this time compared to my Zelda 1 and 2 videos. I realized in retrospect that I was a little too focused on critiquing it from a modern perspective, and that I really didn't give them due credit. So when I started on this one, I wanted to make sure I laid out the issues I had sure, but also that I was a little more balanced. Funnily enough my retrospective ended up being more positive than I expected. I had a lot of good things to say.

You need to go to Kakariko to buy bombs and get 2 bottles! You can get 2 bottles before talking to Sahasrahla! Do you not know that bottles can hold potions? And later on they can hold fairies and bees! Fairies are especially good they revive you when you die! I play with perma-death, meaning that I delete my save file every time I go game over. Those fairies are life savers! I died multiple times but I do not have to reset because the fairies revive me so I do not go game over. I always want to hold at least 1 fairy. So go get your bottles and first fill them with potions (red or purple) and then fairies and potions (because fairies only give 7 hearts). Also go buy bombs because bombs make you powerful against damaged walls!

They great games, I recommend Ocarina of time usually to people who haven’t touched the series. It’s the first full 3D open world one, so much to explore and check out, so many side quest, a grand tale well told, fantastic dungeons and puzzles, memorable boss fights, the music will sing in your head for the rest the your life (it’s good soundtrack so not an annoying like soundtrack that gets stuck.) I try replaying it once every couple years cause it’s just a great adventure story to experience. Highly recommend a look!

19:58 I understand your point. You look at a SNES game knowing what will come after. For somebody like me, old, and you elude to it in your video, we were coming from the NES so yes, the all point is that we were filling some of the gaps in our heads. Also, don't forget that manuals were much more important back in the days. Myamoto knew he couldn't put everything in his game for technical reason but on those systems, the all Zelda experience has to be a combo game + manual. A lot of people think the first Zelda is hard but the addition of the map in the box was something Myaomoto thouhgt about, including some advice.

What makes this game stand out is figuring out the dungeon order in the dark world can be different. After the Dark Palace, you can use the hammer to reach the dark world warp north of Kakariko. Then you do Thieves Town next and get the glove. Then you can upgrade the sword. Then I normally do the Swamp Palace third, get the hook shot. Then i do Misery Mire, get the Cane of Someria, so that the Ice Palace is easier. I get the blue mail slightly earlier. You could do the Ice Palace third but the enemies in the Ice Palace are weak to the hookshot and the Cane of Someria allows you to skip the most tedious puzzle in the dungeon. Bombos allows you to progress without having the fire rod. Then Skull Woods is next, as you need the fire rod for Turtle Rock. Other Zelda games don't let you do this, they focus too much on the Story. Well, BotW and TotK let you do it, but OoT only let you swap the order of the Spirit Temple and Shadow Temple. You could do the Water Temple before Fire, but why? And, it was actually smarter to do the Link to the Past dungeons out of order, because otherwise, you can't get the upgrades to weapons and armor as early and you proceed to get rekt in the dungeons.

It's why I still prefer the graphics of FF7 compared to remake. I have context of what I was doing before they came out. And the leap was astronomical. Like.. mindblowingly so. You'll never have that for these games, but you'll have your own mindblowing moments. I'm glad you took the time to visit this one. It honestly means so much to me when people take their time to experience my and many other's childhood masterpieces. I'm not sure why. Alttp is also the best in terms of replayability. Especially now a days with randomizer. SERIOUSLY randomizer makes alttp even more amazing. Being able to play it with everything randomized makes it so you're playing one the best games of all time but now with no idea where things are located. This allows for dungeons to be played out of order and even getting to different areas earlier or even getting there with different items than you normally would. Other than that this game is what paved the way for all the other zelda games. The music, the pots, bottles, the master sword, his spin attack, the Hookshot, even his ocarina was introduced into alttp before OoT. There's probably a hell of a lot more but my point is everything that is zelda started with alttp. Botw is the only zelda game that started to step away from the "alttp's award a winning recipe". This another reason why botw is my second favorite zelda game. My top zelda games. But 1 and 2 might well be even in my book. 1. A link to the Past. 2. Breath of the Wild. 3. Ocarina of Time. 4\5. Minish Cap and Wind Waker. Tie for me. 6. Link's Awakening HD. (Would be higher but it drops too many frames. 7. Oracle of Ages\Seasons. Ages is better imo. Can't decide for the rest. Twilight Princess is the only Zelda game I just cannot play though. I LOVE Zelda games and this my ONLY zelda game I find boring. This is only personal opinion and it's a very harsh one and I apologize for it.

As someone who has only played the first 4 games (primarily as a kid, when they came out) ALttP and Link's Awakening have always been fantastic to me. My family managed to make TLoZ fun for everyone by involving us all in mapping out secrets and complicated dungeons as my dad played through them, but none of us enjoyed Link's Adventure. ALttP was the first one that I was able to play through without needing a guide or the family's notes to experience it, and Awakening was my very first personal game (my brother and I each had our own copies, as they came with our GameBoys). You run the same risk as watching old movies and making fun of them for using overused tropes and cliche... then you stop and realize these things aren't cliche. They were INVENTED by this movie. And every movie after thought it was SO GOOD that they had to imitate it. That's why aLttP is so good.

I think it's funny the guy said Minish Cap isn't a real Zelda game.. The same team made the Oracle series, they're all great Zelda games and probably the best top down 2d games. Capcom did Zelda some justice and freshened up every time they they stepped in. Same think with Kirby and the amazing mirror. All great games of their genre.

I think some NPCs stand out. The Priest, the brothers that are in an argument, and the Witch were memorable to me. I'll take ALttP over OoT any day. OoT feels like a slower, more linear version of ALttP with less items and dungeons. A fun underused item is the Magic Dust. If you sprinkle it on the shrine in the well under the blacksmith's house you get an upgrade that reduces your magic cost by half. Also each enemy has a unique transformation after sprinkling them with dust. Some even turn into fairies.

A beat a Link to the Past for the first time this year, alongside a second playthrough. This game is the first Zelda where I would actively recommend to people to play, despite that it's not one of my favorites. Structurally I really like the game, granted it's similar to Ocarina of Time, but still a solid way to map out a game. I especially enjoy upgrading Link with better defensive tunics, and even the Master Sword, that specifically was pretty cool and I wish that was brought back in future games. Maybe Master Ore could be an item in BOTW 2, only found in two mini-dungeons in the game, but I'm sidetracking. Really the only aspect of Link to the Past that bothers me, and this is very petty, but I don't like keys in pots. It feels to simple of a hiding space to make dungeons seem more complicated, since I would imaging most newer Zelda player wouldn't think to break the pots. Other than that Link to the Past is good, but I would play almost any other Zelda before this one.

I mean I obviously have a couple more problems with Link to the Past than you, but I already said them in the video so repeating them here would be rather useless. But yeah, it's a solid Zelda game, but it's not one I would recommend to newcomers.

25:25 The series has no growing it has decaying. A link to the past, Links awakening, Ocarina of time and Majora mask. This time was the top of the series. Then everything started collapsing into nothing. Although skyward sword has very good dungeons.
