I believe (but I could be wrong) that the gum has Xylitol as a sweetener in it. Any sweetener ending in -ol is going to be a sugar alcohol. Sorbitol, Erythritol, Glycerol, etc. The reason they use Xylitol instead of sugar is that it does not promote tooth decay and can actually prevent tooth decay a little. So for field soldiers that might not be able to take care of their teeth regularly or properly, it helps their dental health. Any sugar alcohol will have a very small effect on your digestion (helping to move things along) but not a huge effect.

Such a beautiful and pristine environment what a joy to watch a veteran review an MRE there. Unfortunately, it's early July 2024, and with Hurricane Beryl, this could all be changed depending on the conditions. I hope all are safe down there. You always have to be prepared for mother nature regardless where you are on Earth.

I had always assumed they kept the matches in in case the heater failed there would be a potential back up way of cooking or just because having access to fire is never really a bad thing. No military experience though so I have no clue what I’m talking about

I agree with you, jalapeño ketchup, (which I've never heard of either), and chicken, don't sound very appealing to me. I was impressed with how good the marbled cake looked, with the ample amount of chocolate visibly inside of it. Great to see Mr. M&M, a.k.a. Asa, with you again. Minestrone can be the beat soup if made with fresh vegetables. Tomatoe base with beans and Zucchini. Yum yum.

That new chicken mre is really good. I just put everything except the m&ms and the pound cake into the tortillas. Great crunch and flavour. :) Im really enjoying binge watching all the videos Ive missed. Great review again. :)

you remind me of my grand dad Harvie Mack Downing. He served the US nave and was a military Vet. Lost him in 2011, i found out my local story sells MRE's so i plan to eat one in honor of his service. he was 72 when he died

I had a similar one recently but it surprisingly just had regular starkist brand chunked chicken in a pouch you would buy from the store. I believe it had BBQ sauce instead of the fat free mayo which I was happy about.

Very interesting! I have the exact older menu MRE sitting in my closet. A former co worker's brother was in the 82nd Airborne and served in Iraq. One day my co worker shows up with a box of MRE's that his brother supposedly gave him and I ended up with the No 5 chicken breast. Haven't opened it and have been considering doing so.

Matches and coffee depend on if you get accessory pack A or B. A comes with coffee, creamer, sugar and sugar substitute with no matches. B comes with matches but no coffee, creamer, and sugar

You didn't add enough water to the lemon lime drink. That's why the extra powder didn't dissolve. You can only get a certain amount of powder to dissolve into a given volume of water. That's just chemistry. And it's supposed to taste like Gatorade. You can't really make it taste stronger by not adding the right amount of water. You can only dilute the flavor by adding too much.

Its not to often that both meals are almost literally the same it all looked pretty dry and plain to me compared to some other meals you have done and id say u probably made the right call on the old soup its a shame because that may have been rhe best part of the meal aside from the m&ms they should have given some BBQ sauce with one of the meals it may have paired a little better with the chicken dishes. But as always another great video keep up the good work i cant wait for the next one

Some of the MRE chewing gum is sweetened with xylitol sweetener some people are sensitive to xylitol and it can work like a laxative.

Just an outsider's point of view. They may put the matches in so you can start a small fire in your canteen cup stove to heat up water for your coffee/hot chocolate or to heat up the mains in the reason?

Clarence, it could be. We, however, were not issued any type of stove when I was active duty ('80 - 84). We did get Sterno cans from time to time with which to heat up our meals. TFW

Hearing about the medical stuff you said it recalled me a doubt i had the other day, on the military, how they dealt with minor sicknesses like a cold or flu? you had to endure it or they gave some medicine and treatment?

MRE gum is made with sugar alcohols - xylitol these days. It's meant as an oral hygiene-friendly replacement for sugar, though in larger quantities, or for sensitive people, it can act as a laxative. The amount in 2 pieces of gum isn't enough to cause problems most of the time, but the gum is best avoided if you're already "moving quickly". Trade it for more TP.

The MREs always taste better when hungry. I believe that 's why I usually enjoyed them when active duty....I was always hungry by the time we got to eat. TFW, Maxim!

Need to heat the tortillas up at the same as the main. It will help soften them up.

Nice comparison video again. This may sound a bit imprecise, but when kcal is marked on packages, it means kilocalories, which is 1000x more than calories, so if the package says 180 kcal, it means 180 kilocalories (i.e. 180,000 calories), not 180 calories. Normally, a person working in an office consumes around 2,500 kcal during the day, which is 2,500,000 calories. Carry on.

Nothing like watching one of these videos over lunch. And yes, fat free mayonnaise is not mayonnaise, I rather eat less of it than fat free one. I liked the fact the (edited "the") main, the chicken, hold up well over the years, too bad for the other components in the old MRE, but multiple ingredients in a cheese or a sauce, or the cake, is bound to bring trouble, the simpler the better...

It was always 'ration roulette' when it came to getting food in the USMC. We were not given too many choices and we never got to pick which MRE we got. There was always lots of trading going on after rations were issued. TFW, Andrew.

I’ve been eating MREs since 2017 and I will say a lot of these new ones are halfway decent. I just wish the flavor of the gum would last longer because the flavor was always good. I also don’t believe that the gum has laxative in it as I chewed it as often as I got it and never had a change with how stopped up these things make you 😂

They put matches in so you can start a warming fire when allowed. Sure beats a flint and striker like i carried!!

If you eat the match heads, it keeps mosquitoes away. Kind of like carrying a dryer sheet in your pocket. "You have to know these things when you are a Sergeant." This is what i was told by my SFC when I was a young buck Sergeant. It might not be an all around Military or even Army thing but the NCO's in my small ADA world I knew all had heard that. I served in a funny time between when we had matches in our MREs and didn't.

I don’t know if anybody told you, but there was something dark that come out of your mayonnaise when you were emptying the package under the tray

Matches are good for more than just lighting a cigarette it’s just in case you need to make a fire and don’t have any other means to do so

Ah the newer mre chicken is the canned stuff you can buy, use it for chicken salad sandwiches. Just add mayo salt pepper. Old guilty pleasure

In my day, we only had canteens and canteen cup. The cup we used for shaving in the field, coffee, powdered drink, and soup. TFW!
