    In my US Navy hitch - 1980 through 1986 - I only had military rations once, during a visit to Gitmo in 1984. My ship was undergoing "Refresher Training", and a bunch of us went to the shooting range, as we were in the shipboard security and guard force, no Marines on our small ship. We also did the teargas house. We had lunch with C-rats. Probably cycling them out before issuing the new MREs. Never tried MREs until years later as a civilian. I used to order cases of the entrees only, and use them for motorcycle road/camping trips. I liked those tan M&Ms, which have been replaced by Blue. I think the FD Mountain House will always beat out the retort pouch stuff of the same flavor. 👍

    I've had the old chicken and rice and really liked it. It is interesting that there are freeze-dried components in the new rations; the very first MREs were mostly freeze-dried to save weight, but many times the actual texture of the food was changed, making it less palatable, and it was figured out that troops still had to supply water for rehydrating the food.

    Just got back from walking my dogs and I find a notification for your video, oh happy days. :) That MCW is one of my favourites, I know alot of people dont like FS bars, but they are great to eat before exercise. The cheese pretzels are pretty nice too. They put cinnamon in everything, probably to hide the lovely shelf stable taste 😂 Hahaha you can tell an army man when he emptys his canteen cup, smells it and just decides its clean enough😂 Im not surprised that the M&Ms were still good, the candy coating keeps the chocolate good. I think ive seen everything now! New cheese pretzels with 30yr old cheese. The chocolate hazelnut beverage is nice, but its not thirst quenching like the fruit drinks are. Never tried a 30yr old cherry drink, but I trust your opinion ;) The freeze dried chicken and rice is amazing, never tried the 30yr old version though. Loved this comparison video. :) That 30yr old ration must have been stored in optimal conditions, its a rare find.

I wonder if the difference in the coffee taste, was due to the older Tasters Choice, having noticeably more crystals in the package? The drawback to the newer Cold Weather MRE is the need to add hot water. If you don't have access to hot water you can't eat it, your S.O.L. The older MRE doesn't need anything, you can even eat it cold, as is. Also amazing that the older MRE is 33 years old and still good. If stored proberly, in a cool basement, they last over 33 years, the perfect prepper food.

  • @MeAncient

    @MeAncient

    5 ай бұрын

    That's a good point. When we got the first generation MREs back in the early 80s, lots of the menu items were all freeze dried and would have lasted many years, I imagine. If you could get MREs new and have control of how they were stored since new, I think you could have a real shot at an MRE lasting over 30 years. TFW
