Old Leatherstocking - Death and the Lady

Музыка

Banjo Heritage 👉 / cliftonhicks
I learned "Death and the Lady" (Roud 1031) from a recording of Norma Waterson & Martin Carthy. The song was first printed in England in 1778.
As I walked out one winter day
I met a man along the way,
His head was bald his beard was grey
His clothing made of the cold red clay (x2)
I said old man what happened to you?
What country did you belong unto?
My name is Death I've come for thee
All kings and princes bow down to me (x2)
I'll give you gold I'll give you pearls
I'll give you a fine silk robe to wear,
If you will spare me one season more
Give me some time my life to amend (x2)
I want no gold I want no pearls
I want no fine silk robe to wear,
I cannot give you one season more
Nor give you some time your life to amend (x2)
Three days later that lady died
Carve this upon my tomb she cried,
As I am now you'll be one day
Your clothing made of the cold red clay (x2)

Death is always so based in these songs. He does not care for riches, he cannot be bribed or begged, and your worldly importance means nothing to him.

Let's not pretend these songs were being sung in Asia or Africa. I hope that isn't what you were alluding to with the last line, it just seemed a little needless, as the rest of the comment is spot-on. These songs can be enjoyed by any race or ethnic group, sure, but spiritually speaking, these are the songs of those of white, European ancestry.

There is no avoiding that, I'm afraid. And I already said it doesn't preclude anyone of any race from from enjoying them, but let's just stick to telling the truth about the origin and genesis of these songs, shall we? They have nothing to do with Africa, and neither does the Banjo, despite whatever liberal revisionism you are partial to digesting.

That's what music can do. And that's the sort of meaning old songs often had that is missing from most modern music. It's hard to make out sometimes because so many verses got lost or changed, but they tend to be about pretty deep shit in most cases. And I have to put in a word for Sacred Harp singing. Great fun, even though half the songs are about death.

Banjo picking in gloves? I don't even know if i should be very impressed by that or not. I love, love folk style music. I can't say how tragic it is that so much of it has been lost. Them again, never before has so much of it been so easily available to listen to for those who want to find it. Still, not the same as when it was transferred orally through the generations. At least this is done in the proper style. No fancy studio mixing, no fancy arrangements, no bluegrass. Just a plain vocal and accompanying instrument. And the banjo is a fantastic instrument. It is wonderful in its traditional style, but it is also amazingly versatile. You would be surprised at what you can do with a banjo. It doesn't only belong to old timey rural folk music, it can be very sophisticated and haunting.

It's terrifying watching it on the screen. This will probably get me killed one day. If I ever happen upon a horrifying looking woodland freak, my first thought will likely be "gee, I wonder where his banjo is and if he'd be willing to pick me a tune ". Next thing you know, my story is on an episode of unsolved mysteries 🤣

there is something so so raw about the banjo - the man in the skull mask - and the song laying it out there that you will die - no matter what its coming for you in the end - that evokes a weird emotion - a little melancholy but also a reassurance i guess???? either way its awesome - i like many others have mentioned in the comments stumbled upon your channel via the god-tier algorithm but now i cant get enough - thank you

I have a collection of folk music from the early 1900s through the 30s, recorded on tinny old-timey equipment so that voices come through like banjo strings. There's a distinct feeling of nostalgia and reflection that carries through that music, and speaks to bygone Americana. I haven't heard anything in a long time that reaches that level - listening to this song was almost eerie because it reminded me of that folk music!
