Clifton Hicks - In the Pines (Black Girl, Where Did You Sleep Last Night)
Музыка
Banjo Heritage 👉 / cliftonhicks
I learned to sing "In the Pines" (Black Girl, Where Did You Sleep Last Night) from a 1930s Library of Congress recording of Huddie William Ledbetter (better known as "Lead Belly" or "Leadbelly"). Later, when I was about 15, I learned to play it on the banjo from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. Most of my lyrics are from Gibson.
If I had wings like Noah's dove
I would fly to my true love's home,
I'd walk the porch from post to post
Hang down my head and mourn! (Gibson)
If I'd a'listened to what Mamma said
I would not a'been here today,
I would not a'been in this old jailhouse
Just rotting my sweet life away! (Gibson)
The fastest train I ever saw
Carried away that girl of mine,
And the longest train I ever saw
Ran down that Brown Cove line! (Gibson)
The day I left my mother's house
Was the day I left my home,
And the day you turned your back on me
Was the day you lost a friend!
Black girl black girl don't lie to me
Tell me where did you stay last night?
In the longleaf pine where the sun never shines
Babe I shivered when the cold wind blew! (Leadbelly)

He's a living legend already. I listen to the old stuff, he time warps across a few generations, maybe five, with his voice and picking all styles. Sounds as real and as heartfelt as the day it was first sang/played in my mind. Incredible, gives me the shivers. Thanks man!

Leadbelly did it but it's not his song, and this is a different version. I thought Nirvana actually did a pretty good job with this too. I don't care for most of their stuff, except the unplugged album, and that I think is one of the all time greats.

@@justforever96 Crazy thing is...no one knows where this song came from. Even Leadbelly said he never knew exactly where he picked up the song.
I remember my grandad and granny working the field of corn and singing gospel songs . Wood heat and wood cook stove . Nothing handed to them .
That's the way my people lived!
Ran a pick and shovel from the cascades south to the Sierras out east to the blue ridge and back, the sound of steel against stone rings as true to my soul as this dear man's voice. Take good care and thank you sir

Wow. I don’t have any other words. Another world. My granddaddy used to sing this. Chilling💀
Haunting version of this classic..and, I must say, nice on the eyes, too...
I love the haunting sound of the ooo's
one of the best ,or even the best version of this of this song
Reminds me of those old prison song recordings by Lomax! Leadbelly B. Smiling!
1.4K views? How about that? I love work. I can sit and watch it all day long.
man now you're cooking - I think the unaccompanied a capella is a great addition to this channel, in the tradition of roscoe (a village churchyard) or alan lomax (tangle eye blues a particular favorite). also presenting it like this where you're doing work is a great way of getting over the pretension or awkwardness of sitting direct in front of a camera belting it out. so damn glad i signed up to this patreon and that you're so generous with your life and skills my dude

The village church yard is a very old baptist song. It’s sung in many of the old regular baptist and primitive baptist churches. Mostly found in eastern Kentucky (where I’m from) and southwestern Virginia. If you like the sound of that singing though, I would recommend looking into old regular baptist line singing!
I was weeding some grass just like you today as the sun went down hearing this, truly touches what it feels living in the farm, working hard, living hard, cheers from the middle west country side of Brazil, we are all over the world.
I need this guy in my weedy garden …sing good too.
You done mowed me down with that one Clifton. Thank you for your sincerity.
Glad I ain't the only one who sings while he works in the garden.
One if the best versions right there with leadbelly and nirvana your great man

That pain in those pipes. It's beautiful. Don't stop singing and performing to us that need to hear it. You know what I'm saying. 😉
Damn...just Damn
Now that's some "country boy" stuff right there. Hoeing the corn, singing like Hank Williams, with the lightning bugs flying. Don't get no better.
I absolutely love this guy.

simply amazing. the beat of the yard work puts this superbly over the top
This is fucking amazing.
Sing it man hell yeahhhhh
Holy shit man that right there 🏴☠️
That totally stopped me in my tracks. Amazing!
Smithsonian folkways has leadbelly recording. Besides Hicks’ rendition, i enjoyed seeing firelies. Havent seen those in over a decade. And the corn, reminds me of visits to my grandma’s farm.
I love this so damn much
Beautiful singing brother man Clifton! Those lyrics and your sweeping wails give a nice haint to the field. That definitely made for some better tasting corn on the cob, no doubt! May that field always be yours, and your families.☦️💗 Like the Kulak people had before the Bolsheviks and Stalin pogromed, purged, and finally starved what was left of them into collective farms with man made famines. For the greater good of da pipples of course. Ahhh, Subjectivist Utopia..... Everything else doesn't care....
Leadbelly love it! Would love to put a banjo to this!
The gun shots in the background makes this so much better
The rake-work as an instrument 🤯
Real music
So many people, ignorant of both rhoticism in the English language and of the Bible, transcribe similar verses about Noah's dove as if it was about someone named Norah. I'm glad to see it rendered properly here.

@clifton hicks this is bad ass, dude.
I must say I couldn't enough for the application out here on the river bank of Cumberland river of south central KY from my hand build farm just a wonderful old sounding versions of one of my all times favorite song much respect my brother
precious! goosebumps, yeah. hear it over and over in the last few days (not only this song) ... for gods sake you take me closer to banjo sounds, knowlege in sound is the word.
I remember that song in the sixties as a pop song and didn't realise it was an old American folk song. You made a really good job portraying it.
Now that I think I can blow on my harp, Dang buddy you stop at a crossroads to get that voice.
That was great. Thanks
I've never had a friend In the pines Lol Yes
Well done! Thank you!!
I'm a big Leadbelly fan, and gardener, so singing it toiling in the garden just makes it awesome.

YOU ARE CRAZY ! Kurt made this song relevant again after 100 years. His power vocals at the end of that song (butchered for modern audiences) is a part of Rock n Roll history at a level few songs are ever taken . Kurt is the soul this song was made from when singing this song . The pain of Kurt's vocals in that song are beyond music and make you literally shiver down the spine . You are wrong about it and there is no better version of that music . Right now after you read this listen to the song here then put on Live in NY and Unplugged and listen to Kurt . There is no better version to the song than Kurt's version . MY GIRL MY GIRL .. Better than Black Girl anyways. Makes the song much more relevant to everyone.

@@jesusoftheapes while I agree with you about Kurt’s version (which I absolutely love btw) there’s something magical about this too just the way that this was most likely a field song sung from the soul like this there’s something beautiful about it

Just beautiful! 🤩
Fantastic
Sing it Brother I sing at work like that I'm a welder and mostly by Myself working so I have a lot of time to put songs together sometimes I record Myself on My phone and then go home and put the banjo to good use .. so keep it up it makes a hard days work go fast cul Clif
Clif. I busted the head on my Luscomb today. So... sad. But DAMN, dude, I'm tossing the banjo and am just gonna sing now. This is awesome!
This has been on my playlist probably since you posted it. NOTHING BUT A GENUINE RECORDING.

Nirvana Unplugged and Live in NY. Track 14 . The Genuine recording Kurt made of this song was not a studio made song. The only version you can hear was the first time anyone ever heard Kurt sing the song and he sung it live with no electric accompaniment . He put his soul into this song more than any song he wrote or performed in his life. The man leaves his body when he sang this song. He meets whatever higher power there is in the universe and then brings that power to his voice when he sing it. " In the Pines is the original tracks name however they retooled the song a hair so they renamed it "Where did you sleep last night" for the album . There is no better version of this song and no matter what you think of Nirvana or anything Kurt Cobain said or did. He made this song feel . You truly become engrossed in his vocals and this song will never leave you after having heard it by Kurt on that very famous night where Rock n' Roll history was shook to its core by a guy with an unplugged Guitar and a voice that was give to the world by angels .. Mind you they did change the words because lets face it the originals lyrics are not cohesive nor do they make much sense however the song they turned out is legendary and has as much soul as anything ever written and sung. Nirvana Live and Unplugged from NY track #14 . " Where did you sleep Last night". You will never regret it.
Field holler at its finest. Well done my brother, well done😎
