My grandma's dog named Battle died last Wednesday. He's been with me and my brother since we were young. He was put down because his liver disease was causing him pain. You never forget how their claws sound on a hardwood floor when they rush to greet you coming through the front door.

Do you know more about the history of this song? Who wrote it?

Nobody knows who first sang "Texas Rangers." I think it was printed in newspapers as early as the 1830s when the incident took place.

Still listening to this gem Clif. This is a beauty. The only people angry, are the ones siding with criminals. You keep doing your thing and educating people on banjo! God bless you dude. Your music helped me through some tough times!

Hi Clifton, love your playing btw hill people/ hill billies/ hill dwellers, can be evidenced from the place names of Old England. Our ancestors built hill forts to defend themselves and they cut the forests and cultivated the land beneath the forts, and they were buried in burys/ burrows/ barrows. My surname means anyone who lives in or below a hill, is at least 2K years old, most of the hill forts around here are suffixed -den, and many of the towns and villages are suffixed -bury.

Ten years ago, I was making my way into the OT scene as a banjo player and gaining respect. Then I was chased off for being a Christian. Hurts man. The OT scene has gotten very hostile.

The nerve it takes to write a song glorifying a white nationalist while using an African instrument. The cognitive dissonance is thick with this old boy.

@@CliftonHicksbanjo The banjo came from the Akonting which was a folk instrument from West Africa (Senegal, Gambia) It has a nearly identical downstroke playing style and similar drone string. This is according to Bill Evans who is an internationally recognized banjo player, composer and educator whose career spans almost forty years.

Heya Clifton, i love you, i love John Snipes, i love a lot of the old timers... but it doesn't matter what we think is correct, if it is now called clawhammer that's what it is. Language and words evolve, like it or not (personally i don't like it :) )

Stabb is a pretty common German last name. While some Jews use the last name it's not specifically Jewish. Staab's history isn't well documented but what I did find just identifies him as German with no mention of being Jewish. His wife Diana Uvedale Ashton seems to be the daughter of a Reverend which leads me to believe there is no Jewish connection there. I did find mention that Staab played piano at a meet up in his home town of Chicago for Lincoln during his presidential campaign which is interesting and definitely lends credence to the assertion that this is a protest song of sorts.

I miss seein you more often, hope work is going well for ya. Next time you're around Buffalo National, you should come visit us in Mountain View Arkansas, I think you'd really enjoy the little town. Maybe you've already visited? But every weekend there's old time music played on the square, people from around the world come to the pickin park.
