I learned "The Spring of 65" from a field recording of J.D. Cornett. My instrument is a minstrel style fretless banjo by Terry Bell. My strings are Aquila "New Nylgut" tuned cGCFG (A=432 Hz).

Are ya back in there close to Buffalo National Forrest again this year? I'd so, it's a beautiful time to be there with dogwoods bloomin, turkey getting fired up and Morel mushrooms coming in! The Ozarks are beautiful in the spring! Just curious, do you ever get to sneak away yo Mountain View while you're in Ark? The "Pickin Park" and around the square has alot of good folk/bluegrass/ol' time music, and has since the 1800's. I'm sure you're already aware, but many call it the folk music capital of the world. Its not too far from my vacation home, so I spend alot of time there.
I woke up one morning in the Spring of '65 I felt myself quite lucky to be found alive, I worked up my team my business to pursue Instead of hauling four loads I only hauled two. I got so drunk at Harper I couldn't haul no more The men a'telling jokes I laughed 'til I was sore, The grocer being open the money spending free Soon as a glass was emptied another filled for me. I picked up my saddle and I strolled out to the barn Catching some old grey not meaning harm, I climbed upon her back and rode so very still I scarcely drew a breath 'til I reached the Laurel Hill. I met an old acquaintance whose name I won't tell at all He told me where that evening there's going to be a ball, We dillied and we dallied 'til at last we did agree To meet again that evening where the fiddle was to be. I'll tell all you good people how our party did commence Four jolly boys got on the floor to dance, The fiddler being willing the whisky being strong He played "The Crippled Kingfisher" about ten hours long. I see the morning star boys I guess we've danced enough We'll spend another hour paying cash-for-cuff, We'll go back to our plows we'll whistle and we'll sing We never will be guilty of another such a thing. Come all you newsy women who scatter news about Don't spread no tales about us we're bad enough without, Don't tell no tales upon us to kick up any fuss You've been guilty of the same thing perhaps a whole lot worse.

@CliftonHicksbanjo I don't know if you will see this I was wondering if someday you would try to play pretty boy Floyd by woody Guthrie on the banjo I've never heard it played on banjo as soon as woody heard it on the radio that Floyd was killed he started jotting the lyrics down

What a fantastic idea, belongs on a movie like 'Jeremiah Johnson, all America deserves to hear this man's voice. As an Englishman he represents the true voice of America for me,it's like being in a time machine when he sings & plays,he's a walking, talking archive.
A pickin' howdy! Wind was stupid here today.
You prolly don’t remember but I’m a teenager that sent you a picture of great grandpas old banjo a while back to ask about its age and I got it repaired and learned to play over the last year or so… I just started making an octagonal tack head banjo in my highschool shop. Thanks mr hicks!
Man alive those strings sound amazing on that instrument .
Mr. Hicks, this is the 1st video I've seen of you that wasn't Old Leather stocking. My wife and I agree that you're a lot younger than what we'd thought. I appreciate you keeping this music alive! It kind of touches my soul! Thank you!

I really do enjoy a tasteful banjo accompanied by a simple song sung with obvious strong conviction.
Born in November actually. Great stuff here.
Best banjo I’ve heard all week
If I had more than these arms of mine, I'd raise more than this pint for this song. Songs like this are the closest we can get to a time machine. The emoting voice and the twanging banjo, ah. Bliss. Thank you kindly Clifton!
That banjo looks like it has a story to tell.

I like that instrument. Cool piece of wood used for that neck, too
Seen your photographs from your military past days bless you thanks for sharing them 😊🎉😊🎉
Fantastic
First time I heard a version of this song was back in the early ‘70s by the Holy Modal Rounders on their “Good Taste is Timeless” record. Loved your take on an old song.
Awesome banjo style from an astonishing banjoman
I was wondering when we would get another. Thank you for what you do.
Man, that banjo sounds SWEET!!
Binging banjo videos til I get another banjo for myself, or find my old one. (It was stollen this week. What the hell who steals a banjo?) Edit- Got a new banjo arriving today. We'll. It's late 50s but it's new to me

There he is! That Bell Boucher is gritty and growly in that low modal tuning. Great as always!
Very nice. Thanks.
Awesome 👏 thank you!!!!
Awesome, as always, Clifton.
Happy New Year, Clifton! Looking forward to more music and stories this year. And more puppy dogs.
Thank you. I love your music.
Hey, I just wanted to say I love your renditions of these old songs. I've long been a fan of Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe and more recently started listening to Jerry Garcia and David Grisman playing the old tunes as well as the New Lost City Ramblers. I got inspired to start playing around with the mandolin too... At any rate it's very cool to hear you keeping these tunes alive and doing it well!!
Great stuff! I love that Banjo! Thanks! 🙂😎
I could hear the fiddle in my head as you played and sang the song. Very nice
Perfect!
Very well done Mr. Hicks!

made my day!
Off topic: I just saw an old Henry Fonda movie…”The Long Night” (1947). It was weird there’s a resemblance. But Fonda cant play banjo. 😂
Every person is good at some particular thing. I would most certainly say you are a good banjo player. How many years of playing did it take for you to have the "ah-ha" moment, the turning point in your playing where you switched from a novice to a decent banjo player?

Hey Clifton, you still doing work around Buffalo in Arkansas? If so its been cold work, it was 0° when i got up this morning. One of these times, if you do go back to the area, you need to come to Mountain View. I think you'd enjoy it. Maybe you've been already. But its wonderful trout fishing on the river and some really good local musicians. The whole town centered around folk/bluegrass music.

Hi Clifton! I hope you are well! I wanted to ask you if I could make contact with you? I moved to WY to pursue a PhD in psychology (and hopefully join the USMC) from the Middle East and have gotten close with many Iraq veterans. I have a plethora of important questions that I have asked people who have been in Iraq, or served under similar circumstances. If you would be willing this would be very helpful. If so, I'll explain myself a little more. - Odd platform of digital footprints here on KZread! Thanks!
sounds a lot like Naomi Wise sped up a bit.
I know this is strange but there's a black metal song with a banjo solo of all things, the song is myr and the band is taake.
