Old English Suffolk accent and dialect, East Anglia (2) How we say "Have"

In this video for my Suffolk accent and dialect series I explain the way I say the word "Have", one of those words that tends to sound very Suffolk :)

Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video. Nice that you have family connections here too! I really like accents, when I've been out your way I love the accent from that region.

Thanks for making these! I was just reading about how the old New England (Yankee American) accents developed from old Suffolk and East Anglia dialects and then I stumbled across your videos. Very lovely way of speaking you have and interesting explanations :)

Hi Simone, thank you for the kind words. I'm pleased that you like my videos :) It's interesting how far this accent has travelled, and how it's still so strong in certain places :)

Just discovered this video series and just realised you've got so many more. I feel like I'm being a bit overdramatic, but, thank you so much for these. I grew up in Suffolk. I used to have a strong accent when I was a kid but slowly started to lose it. Then I moved to Wales and especially started to lose it and I now have a generic "southern accent", which makes me sad. I don't miss much about Suffolk but I really miss the accent, and I'm so sad to have lost it. Hearing you speak I could honestly cry a bit. I often go months without hearing the accent I grew up with. Reminds me of my grandparents ("muh nahny") and old friends I haven't spoken to in years. I hope by watching these videos I can recover a bit of my accent! The example I always use is how I used to speak to my dog. (My accent comes back a bit when I talk to animals for some reason.) When he would sit by the back door instead of saying "Come on boy, let me let you out", I would say "Cum ohn boi, lemme-leh-yuh-ah(t)".

Thank you so, so much for your lovely message and I'm really glad that you like my videos :) I can imagine that over time your accent would change a bit after being away from Suffolk. But I also think that you probably still sound more Suffolk than you think and that odd words now and then come out. The Suffolk accent is dying out a bit now sadly and I find that really sad. Hence why I'm now doing these videos, I don't want it do disappear or be forgotten. As with any regional accent, it's part of who we are. And I'm the same with my pets, they get full on broad Suffolk :D I did laugh when I read that you do it too.

I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying my videos and my channel, that means a lot so thank you. I’m also heartened to know they’ve been of comfort to you during Lockdown. It’s been such a tough time for everyone hasn’t it, we really are living in very strange times now. When you have a little pang of homesickness remember Suffolk is always here waiting if you ever want to return.

Nice(or noice)to hear you and your Suffolk accent again(agin). It makes me realise(realoise) how much I miss my old Essex Country accent from yonks ago(agoo). I´m now in a very different place, a small town in Spain where everyone speaks Spanish with an accent of this particular area. Here, each town has its own accent, very complicated!

Blimey, you have gone further afield and to a place where the sun shines a lot more than here I bet! It sounds like you have the same thing there as we do here, that the accent changes per town. Though here in Suffolk itself mainly it's the words that differ per town rather than the accent :D

I did smile when you mentioned that the plumber is speaking the dialect, it’s disappearing so fast that it’s heartening to know others are picking it up 🙂

Hiya, funny how things go isn't it. You lived in Suffolk over there and yet your ancestors are from Suffolk over here :) As for my rings, they're actually ring splints. I have a genetic condition that makes my joints very bendy, and I can dislocate them real easy. So I often wear splints to stop them bending out of joint. And thank you for the compliment, you've made me smile now, thank you :)

I spent my early teens losing my Suffolk accent and recently decided to try to get it back. Its so true, "to alter, mispronounce, change, and even make up words." I find myself hesitant to speak with my original accent in fear that people will clock me for committing inconsistencies and garbling words, but that's the way it goes!

Seeing as our Suffolk accent is disappearing then I salute you in your quest to get yours back again. It's a little part of our history that needs saving, or this case restoring. It'll all come flooding back in no time, plus it's such a relaxed way of speaking. That's a good thing :)

@@EssEvergreen i agree! For some reason, when I just let go of the idea that even local people sometimes need to struggle to understand what was just said (let's face it, that's half the fun) it is very relaxing to let the "inner child" voice come out!

Thas Norfick innit? As in Singing Postman's "Ayou gotta loight Bor". An uncle of mine, lived at Horringer, near Bury.........originated from Lows'toft and inspite of me being Suffolk born and bred (mostly, we did a spell 'tother side of Stour), I had difficulty in understanding what he were a saying on. My ex-wife, born North Wales, lived most of her life in Liverpool, could understand what my U ncle said with no problem..........always baffled me as to why and how?
