Old Drill Press Restoration - Tool Restoration NO Power Tools

Today I am restoring something more complex - old drill press restoration. This bench drill press is hand cranked and it was really hard to get hands on it. I am so excited to show you each step of this amazing restoration and of course to use it in future videos…

Hey everyone! First of all, sorry for so long video, I tried to make it short as possible! Testing the old drill press, making a wooden base, restoring some drill bits and making stand for them will come in another video … Anyway, I am so thrilled that I managed to restore this amazing old drill press with hand tools only. This restoration was definitely my biggest challenge so far… hope you will enjoy in watching! Stay positive and enjoy in summer! See you next Monday 😊 Boris, Norway

To find more info on the KEEN drill press, try contacting a tool museum in London as it was made in England. Best of luck. Waiting for your next project.

I know that this is an old video, but this is my favorite restoration. I have a Goodell Manufacturing hand drill, maybe 1950’s and a semi- modern one made by Fiskars. They are much more controllable when doing delicate wood drilling. I get much less breakout at the end of the drilled hole. Thanks 🔪🎸

It seems to me that it is the largest tool that you have seen restore. I am left out of the box. Nothing else the label is all a job in itself. Could you tell me what year the drill is, and I can't wait to see what you can do with this new gem in the workshop. Thank you very much.

Regarding the year, I haven't found out yet. It seems there is not many left out there or people do not sell them. On web I managed to find just a few of them, but without any date or closer information unfortunately... Me too, it will be a major help in future projects 😃👍 Take care!

Amazing restoration, my friend. Just found your channel and subscribed immediately. Very impressive! I own several types of hand drills similar to the one you were using. I have two with two speeds. A suggestion... To avoid the wobble when drilling, try to drill horizontally. This will minimize any wobble and distortion of the hole being drilled. I do a lot of fabrication and learned from my Grandfather. ( i am not being critical, simply offering advice.) I learned from the best so I try to pass what I learned. More, please!

A beautiful end product, but part of any restoration should be knowing where to leave hands off. The wooden crank handle looked fine as it was and should have been left alone. The black parts of this drill appear to be japanned, rather than painted, and were therefore resistant to paint remover. I believe if this had been my tool, I would have just disassembled, cleaned and lubricated, keeping the original paint as it was which looked quite nice to begin with.

Thanks for detailed feedback Stanley 👍 Handle was jamed and cracked while removing, my wish was to leave as is. Because of very corroded metal rod, handle didn't worked properly and turning drill was really hard, so removing and cleaning was necessary. I would leave it as is, but that didn't happen. So I had to make a new one. Black paint had many spots with rust and not complete as I wanted. Therefore I removed it and did the painting. Everyone has own methods and ways of doing things and this one is mine. Now if I did a video as you suggested I would got a ton of comments like this is not a restoration, if I title differently what about SEO, and so on. There is a many factors involved and planned to do videos like this. I do best I can as one man and appreciate each of you for commenting, watching and supporting. Best regards!

I have one almost identical to this but in better condition. Same brand, all original, but the flywheel is entirely red, and the non-red parts are a more vibrant blue. The wooden handle is smaller and is stained red in an attractive way, looks like paint but you can see the grain. I’ve used it to make a metal bender, not very good as I didn’t have a welder at the time, or really anything, no bench, no clamps, nothing to attach the drill to, but the drill is quite accurate. It cannot cut big holes though, it really struggles once the bits are more than a few mm, maybe I’m using wood bits, idk, they’re my dads, they seem to be titanium coated though. You cannot do pilot holes as the cut edges of the hole create too much friction on the next drill bit used, so I just go straight for the bigger ones. Drilling very large holes is in my experience not possible, as you can’t help yourself out with pilot holes as I explained, just too much surface area on the cutting part of the drill, need higher RPM maybe, even with everything swimming in oil. I think it’s really made for drilling brass, and small brackets and stuff, and maybe wood. The up/down mechanism is quite temperamental on mine, even though the surfaces of everything seem extremely good, no wear. Sometimes you have to hold the flywheel or rapidly switch from clockwise/counterclockwise action on the handle. Seems to be designed to stop advancing if it meets a certain amount of resistance, like the bit isn’t cutting fast, so it just smooths out whatever like 0.1mm of material was stopping it and then spins freely, you have to then trigger it to advance once more. Cool tool but certainly a cheap modern drill press is more useful. I’m sure this absolutely has applications in doing what it really was made for, household stuff, maybe jewellery, fettling really, not engineering, not useless by any means, and honestly just about as good if not better than many new ones at going through small plates and bits of brass, won’t take long. One problem I’m struggling with is that it’s too small for even the tiny old (also blue) drill press vice that my great uncle also used with it I presume. No way to clamp it on. It has obviously as seen in the vid, the channels in the base for clamping I think, but (probably signifying it’s intended usage) you’d only be able to clamp very tiny things to it. What I thought I might do is bolt the drill to a plate of metal maybe 3x the size of the drill base, and then through holes in the plate, make and use lever/cam style clamps, like a slightly bent piece of metal with an elongated hole in the middle for a bolt/threaded rod to go through and into the plate, and a rod or bolt one end, one end goes over the base of the drill, clamping a piece to the base, you tighten a nut or knob over the clamp on the rod going into the big plate, the rod at the other end pushes against the metal plate. If that makes any sense... Nice job by the way. Always good to see an old tool rejuvenated.

Hi Eldon! Thank you for the feedback. Mine works totally opposite, I can use only big drill bits because the down force is quite high. Smaller bits just start bending and break. I go from 6 mm and above. Brass, copper and wood drills like cheese. I haven't tried yet on proper steel. I am quite happy to use it, but it is not simple as a modern drill. To operate properly needs knowledge, patience and gained experience. I figured out how to solve small distances from base to chuck in a very simple manner. I will turn around the base, slide in the drill body back, and have a nice distance for any drilling really. I will do post or a short video on that :)
