    Im facinating how the song is 10:22 seconds long. The lyric at the halfway point 5:11 he says "Mitosis". Mitosis is the act of a cell splitting. You notice the songs tone changes after the "split" from dreamy and more tribal / hand percussion to the more typical Tool sound with the full drum kit taking over and the bass and guitars becoming more aggressive. My admiration mr. Maynard...

    Danny is indeed triggering those sounds at the beginning. I had the pleasure of seeing them in November before the pandemic, and it hadn't even dawned on me until I saw them play this song live that Danny was behind all those sounds, rather than programmed synths or whatever. Also Geebz, you know how wild the Tool army is. This was their first new song in THIRTEEN years, so it has a special place in our hearts.

    Adams guitar at the beginning isn’t a bow, he’s sliding whilst using the volume knob on his guitar, that’s what he does live any way 😶✌️✌️

  • @carlgalilee7339

    @carlgalilee7339

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yep, this, although he's using hammer ons rather than slides for this particular piece and he tends to use a volume pedal rather than knob for most of his swell effects. Same result but much more control with a pedal. What makes it particualrly cool is he's playing notes ahead of Danny and syncs his foot rather than his hand to bring up the volume on the beat. If you practice guitar, it takes quite a bit of rethinking when you've trained your hands for so long to be in time with the beat. Adam uses volume changes extensively to shape his sound. He sets his amps up to his highest gain (and rarely changes channels on the amps) then uses volume to back it off for clean pieces or just on the edge of break up.

    I learned about Tool after Neil Peart’s death. Heard that Danny did a tribute to him during his Chocolate Chip Trip drum solo the night Neil’s death was announced. Decided to check out the album after some reading and man, Fear Inoculum has become one of my all time favorite albums. It’s driving, it’s loud, but it’s smooth. So, I can have this amazing wall of sound around me, but still focus. I plug in some headphones at work and hit this album when I need an hour+ of focus and I don’t want to hear my coworkers anymore. The first note of the title song hits like a comforting balm. And man, I hate having to interrupt any of it to talk on the phone, etc. One cool fact about the title song I read about - it’s 10:20 in length. Maynard drops ‘mitosis’ at 5:10… 🧐😁 In all fairness, I do have to skip Mockingbeat at the end. That discordant jangle just is not what I need anymore.

    I believe Adam and Justin are doing it, which would explain the "back and forth" sound we hear in the beggining. After the first section when Adam returns to the volume swells, Justin is busy playing the bass track and it's clear that the swell in this part (around 7:40 in this video) is "missing" its counterpart.

    The bowed sound in the beginning is both Adam and Justin. With headphones you can hear the different string timbres between guitar and bass - Adam is panned left and Justin is panned right. The trick is Adam “mostly” starts each swell, with Justin quickly following with his own, but every once in awhile Justin starts the pickup note first. Justin commented on this “call and answer” method in one of his interviews. The tremolo sound heading into the second verse is also bass guitar.

    Unfortunately FI is Tool's weakest album. The magic just isn't there. They gave it a fair shot (the production sound is superb) but the album lacks cohesion. It is a collection of nice ideas, riffs and grooves that are performed excellently but it lacks that uniformity in complexity that the earlier albums had. This is not to say that you can't like Fear Inoculom, great if you do, but this is the first Tool album I don't want to listen to over and over again.

    First time chiming in after several episode watches and all I can say is I want you as a neighbor, mentor, and drinking buddy. We need to also look at some past great songs from the composer's perspective in you such as Rainbow's "Stargazer", Rush's "La Villa Strangiato", or Dream Theater's "In The Presence of Enemies". Hang Ten!

    Guitarist is rolling on the volume, he hits note w no sound then rolls on the volume to get the guitar sound to emit but without the strike heard, quick roll on roll on off of the volume, can also use a volume pedal

    Adam’s not playing a bow there in the intro. He’s doing volume swells. The guitar and bass are playing the same notes in the same register, guitar on the on beat and bass on the back beat. This gives that almost breathing sound to the notes. Genius stuff by Tool.
