Their best, I think. And that's a hard, hard decision to make. That and FI, and maybe 10,000 Days too, are pure Tool 🔧 With Days and FI, a lot of their input was put into the production. That's why I feel like, the more we go along with them, the closer we get to their "actual" sound

@@TheUselessGeniusX I found 10,000 Days to be a mixed bag compared to Lateralus. And I think Fear Inoculum is somewhere in-between the other two albums.

I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't shy away from going into a bit of music theory here and there, if that means you can better explain what exactly is happening in the song. My guess is, most of your audience is already interested in music more than the average person, and would appreciate a deeper analysis from someone knowledgeable in the field. In fact, it's your ability to analyse the theory, the production and playing techniques and explain what is happening on a more fundamental level that separates you from other run of the mill reaction channels, and gives the most value to these videos. Utilize your skillset, I'm sure your audience will only welcome it.

Right on, man. This has always been the most emotionally heavy song by tool for me. When it hits it's instant eargasm even after a thousand listens. I hope he breaks down Jambi and Eulogy also. Their whole discography really deserves a listen. So many gems. I'm with you though, powerful song. *edit: he mentioned not knowing what album this song is off of. I'm a firm believer that tool needs to be consumed by the album. They each have their own vibes that almoat require listening to the previous song to get the whole experience, the journey from headspace to headspace from song to song is just as powerful as the songs themselves. They are our generation's Pink Floyd in that sense. In my opinion.

I remember anxiety waiting for this album's release. I have been a Tool fan ever since I heard Undertow. I was 19 and very pregnant with my now 27 year old daughter. Then they released Aenema and I didn't think they could top that masterpiece. I got Lareralus as soon as it came out and sat in my room, rolled a joint, put this in my CD player and turned it up. I sat on my floor listening to Grudge, then The Patient came on, then Schism, and then these tracks came on and I was blown away. Then Lateralus! Another freaking masterpiece.

I regard this as Tool's must beautiful song. The intro, the crystal clear vocals, the lyrics, the driving drums, ... Nothing feels out of place here and there's such an amazing balance between every instrument. This is not my favorite song but I think this is their most perfect song.

@@scotttam7491 Hey, 10+ years classical musician here. There's hardly any theory. Like, the grand total of naming and rules that actually go into contemporary musical theory. There aren't as many as some people will make you think. The actual challenge begins when you, the theorist, begins to try and understand how different instruments work, namely sound science. Theory itself pretty much only comprises the names of notes, chords and scales, by themselves and in relation to one another, and then some old ass concepts about "ideal musical moments" such as cadences and syncopation. But in practice they're just naming conventions we classical people use to describe what we're doing. And most of it's in Italian, so they get a free pass. Just like French in cooking. Or pretty much all Europeans for medicine. As someone interested in music more as a creator or enthusiast, for instance, you should be much more concerned with how to actually achieve the sound you want to produce. Be that in terms of one instrument or an entire band/orchestra. As it turns out, to do just that you need next to zero "music theory". The actual theory only starts to matter if the things you listen to or try to reproduce are 100+ years old cantatas, chorals or dances. Anything vaguely recent follows largely incompatible rules, such as autonomous ideas about tonality and free rhythm. Somehow people think it's "cool" to use the classical toolbox to describe something like rock. And you definitely could do that. But it just doesn't make any real sense. 90% of "the theory" (with the notable exception of the names and simple functions of notes and chords) is inapplicable to rock music entirely. In jazz, for instance, they actually invented their own theory regarding chords, ornaments and techniques, and just stamped that on top of some basic classical theory, because they realised music had evolved and they were already breaking most of the rules anyway. Personally, I would just get used to the very, very basics, like the colloquial names of notes and chords, and then techniques in the context of their respective instruments. Beyond that, I swear even the experts have no idea what they're talking about most of the time, when it's about the modern musics.

Am I right to think Neurosis inspired tool? The tribal drumming and build up to a crushing guitar in Through Silver in Blood reminds me of Lateralus. But reflection takes it up a notch and goes full psychadelic.

this is my favorite engineering on a tool album. It has an epic cinematic quality above their other albums.

"Just an old guy having fun." I think you're underselling yourself a bit, but at the same time being completely honest. You help me understand exactly why I love this music, and why it affects me so much. But also the fact that you love doing it, and are having fun is what makes these videos enjoyable. This album hooked me on Tool. The lyrical themes and compositions are so unique, even for Tool. Love how they collaborate with Alex Gray with the artwork :D This artwork is probably their finest and most fitting! :D

@@jametowne Exactly. he could feel it, without needing to see it. The visual during that part of the video is in sync with the meditative part of the song. Listening and breathing with it letting the 'kundalini' rise with the song is just as powerful as listening to one of those '7 chakra meditation' videos. Super cool, so glad to see that.

This song is a deeply spiritual experience for me. You do such a great job breaking this down, & it makes me smile that you appreciate it on your first listen. I was studying music in college when this album released, & it's still one of my favorite records of all time.

First thing I thought when he stopped it there was "Oh no, if he doesn't rewind before he starts playing again, the "hit" is going to lose impact". Then he rewinded it right after he was done speaking and with relief I awaited for a split second with a huge smile on my face before he heard that great moment for the first time. It was a wild ride I tell you.

Yes, finally! I've been scrolling like, "No one mentioning 'Reflection'?" It's also one of those tracks where you hear a distinctive riff by the synth being repeated on the FI album... When I really *HEARD* The Grudge for the first time after hearing it "in conversation" let's say... When I first dedicated time to hearing it, I was amazed, and I just HAD to master it on drums, it is such an epic song.

Lateralus came out when I was a junior in high school. My musical tastes hadn’t really evolved that much at that age. I liked Tool, but I didn’t understand music so I couldn’t appreciate it. Now, in my mid 30s, I can really appreciate the virtuosity in these musicians.

I find that happens with me and a lot of bands... specifically- Mudvayne, Pink Floyd, LedZep... hell, if you would have told highschool me that one day I'd genuinely be enthralled with Crooked Still (newgrass)... doubt would be a significant understatement.

'Half of What We Know' was the bait, but 'Did You Sleep Well', 'When First Unto This Country', 'Florence' and 'Oh, Agamemnon' set the hook. (Oddly- it's hard for my eyes to stay dry during Florence... that 'and enemies surrounding you, have courage and be bold' line... I miss a breath...) Thank you for the flattery.

As soon as that Maynard vocal comes in, chills. I’ve heard these songs countless times and I still feel like it’s so fresh. Tool just knows how to engage the listener and keep you glued. These are actually the first songs on my workout music.

Wow. listening and reading other comments helps put in perspective and come to light things in our lives. As one who thinks about death and loss of people in my life listening to this song clarifies to me how Tool has emotionally helped me deal with stress and not want to end this life too early. Been listening to tool for many years. Glad to be part of the Army
