Okinawa US Navy Ships Pound Beach 10th Army Goes Ashore Aerial Beachhead Footage
US Tenth Army troops go ashore on the southwest coast of Okinawa Island, Japan following 9 days of shelling by the Navy's 5th Fleet in this footage from Combat Bulletin no. 50. I have added additional footage from CB #51 with interesting aerial views of the beachhead area as well as views of the terrain in that area of Okinawa.
Features a 45 second segment of rocket ships firing.
Public domain footage from the US Army Signal Corps' Army Pictorial Service.

@@GrrMeister fair call. I should have said - I've never seen a naval rocket barrage before. 👍
Absolutely awesome firepower.
I was stationed on Okinawa at the sigint site of Torii Station. They are still digging up unexploded shells after all these years. Most dangerous job there is a heavy equipment operator.
Best place !
That smiling baby at the end was adorable.
Imagine the view of the defenders during that naval assault. And it's not just the bombardment, but also the sight on the horizon of the invasion to come. The supplies were low, food and ammo, re-supply was not possible. No air or naval support. They knew they were to be overrun. It was a siege mentality to protect the homeland. Their options were zero.

Imagine the civilians of China when the Japanese committed the rape of Nanking and more.
My grandfather was in a unit called bushmasters
Which battleships were these? My grandfather was on the USS South Dakota.
I am glad that Army Signal Corps' invasion of Okinawa was so easy. Back in the day my high school history books said that Okinawa was a bloodbath. The movie Hacksaw Ridge seem to confirm what I learned in high school. Either there are two islands named Okinawa or the Army Signal Corps is leaving out a few significant facts.

No you’re wrong. They were able to include every single exact detail into their 7 min presentation from the 1940’s.

Yeah, seriously....the meteor was the only operational allied jet, but I didn't see any of them here.
All anticipated by the Japanese who were waiting elsewhere.

How inaccurate was that last part about the civillians!
@BatMan-oe2gh

Actually it wasn't. Many Japanese civilians committed suicide because they had been led to believe the Americans would slaughter them. It took a while for them to accept that the Americans were actually going to help them and they then stayed in their villages and stopped killing themselves.

The last part is true. The Japanese military was telling Japanese civilians that American soldiers would rape and murder them, which made the civilians very fearful. The American Army responded by offering aid to Japanese civilians and with a very strict rules on how soldiers where allowed to interact with civilians. Giving soldiers candy to hand out to children was another way the American Army approached wining over the Japanese civilians.

@@wmtrader I don't understand how Japanese veterans were easily eliminated by the US in each Pacific campaign.
...and not one Japanese casualty from the nine day bombardment because the landing was completely unopposed.
Man only the us could invade Europe and the pacific at the same time.
