I never get tired to tell that this show saved my life. 21 years ago had a major depression wanting to die. But then I saw the Arlong Arc with Nami's backstory. Her history roused me out of my mindset with tunnel vision. "I am not the only person in black despair." I realized. There was a character I can understand and maybe she could understand my behavior. Nobody was there for me in the real world. It helped me to regain will to live and sense. One Piece's feelings reached me first of all. Anime in general is up to now my best psychotherapy I've ever had. Is One Piece the best show I've ever seen? Not at all but it always will have a special place in my heart. This show has everything I could wish for: Adventure, comedy, drama, emotion, politics, history. The story structure itself is a treasure box. There are some plots and arcs I don't like but in general it is great. Even if I loose interest for some time I come back at some point.

I feel you, brother. I discovered One Piece during the Pandemic. I lost my job in June of 2020. I had been looking to study under my director to learn rehab directing (I was an ordinary therapist at the time), and my wife and I were trying to save up for a house. I was convinced that losing my job had lost the house and my possibility of career advancement. I wanted to be a director really badly, and I thought that dream was gone. I then heard Luffy say “I decided a long time ago that I was gonna be the King of the Pirates, and if I die fighting for that, then I die.” It shook me. I decided I was gonna be a rehab director, and if I died fighting for it, then I die. It’s 2 and 1/2 years later now, and I have my director job and we got our house. 🙂

I relate to this so much. I have had severe depression for more than three years and I ended up watching this entire show in one month at the recommendation of a friend. Seeing characters you’ve grown attached to not being willing to give up gives you a sense of inspiration to do the same. I have to say if everything I’ve ever watched, I have never loved something and felt so attached to something as One Piece.

A couple chapters ago, 3 I believe, One Piece entered his Final Saga and Oda estimated that he could wrap up the story in the next 3 years, this Sunday chapter 1060 is going to be released and to put this simply, you can watch 1000 ep worth of other anime or read 1060 chapters worth of another manga and all those stories combined would not come close to the dept or enjoyment one has after learning One Piece's story, it really is something else.

3 years equates to less than 120 chapters. Personally I'd estimate the end of the series by chapters rather than years. I expect at least another 300 chapters if not more. Personally I think it'll end around 1400 - 1500 chapters, but it depends on how quickly the story moves going forward

The thing you must understand about one piece is it is an anarchist absurdist anthem… a magnum opus to authentic life in the tradition of absurdists like Camus … being a pirate in one piece is different than your old school pirate tale we are used to in the western media… a pirate is someone who owns themselves… god, government, laws, traditions, bullies, crime families none of these things get in the way of you living exactly how you feel in your soul… Luffy tells us in the first scene when we meet him “he will either become the king of the pirates or die” no accepting a mediocre life that you don’t want! A pirate is shown to take many forms but it’s someone that treads against the grain in all kinds of way and do not let excuses stop them from trying. Luffy literally goes into the sky and punches god in the face knocking him down to earth, senor pink owns that baby bonnet he does not give a fuck what anyone thinks and that’s why he is a true pirate! none of the tough guy norms of others matters to him! that baby bonnet and his life lived in the honor of his dead family and is what he sees as true manhood not giving a fuck what anyone else has to say or think about it … he and all pirates set out into the sea of the unknown without borders and make their own life not giving a fuck what the law or norms of their home island tell them. This is adventure! One piece has so many islands and characters because it’s a device to explore all of the ways one can live. They arrive at a new island and they have a totally different set of norms and circumstances socially, economically, politically, genetically, different standards of peace and violence, standards of freedom and slavery. Every subject is explored and turned on its head to look at what is an authentic life from hundreds of contexts! Then with all of that it’s a huge mystery that continues to get more complex instead of solved today I read chapter 1060 and I have no idea what the one piece is and their are more layers of mystery than chapter 1059! You can tell I am a fan

One piece is enjoyable from the start then at Arlong park (around ep 30) you get a good first taste of what is in store later on. Then the Alabasta saga (ep 60 ish to 110) will Bring a completely new scale to the level of conflicts in the story thus far. The next arc after this is a fantastic adventure with a bit of a lighter tone. Then Oda will Flex his writing skills in Enies lobby(ep 300 ish) to create one of the greatest moments in literature. When you get to this point in the story you will completely understand why One Piece is coveted as the one of the greatest stories ever told. P.S. I'm a anime only fan, so I only know ep approximations, I'd recommend reading the manga but going back to watch certain scenes in the anime, I've watched both dub and sub and both are great. The Dub hits harder for me since its where I started and hearing certain things in a language you understand just hits different.

Both are so much better in the anime because of the music, theme and animation.

personally I say Romance Dawn is a nice start, Orange Town gives a small glimpse at what One Piece is, Syrup Village is pretty meh, Baratie is when things pick back up, Arlong Park is the true first glimpse at what One Piece truly is, then things calm down a bit till Alabasta where things really pick back up and then Enies Lobby, Marineford, Dressrosa, Wholecake Island and Wano are all peak One Piece

I was 13 when I got into One Piece - and that's closer to 20 years ago than 10 - and initially it was mostly curiosity, because an older friend was reading it and I had never even heard about manga before lol. For that me, it was the pirate imagery, but also the character of Usopp, who's the sorta normie, average dude of the crew. He had - and still has - a lot of traits I identify with. I dropped it for a while because school but then I picked it up again some years later and at that point, what drew me in was the story, the characters, and the world. Pirates are cool, man. And at that point I had started learning to appreciate stuff like political intrigue and centuries old mystery that looms in the background. I've taken a few breaks over the years (mostly because of school lol), but I'm fully caught up in the story and it's one of those stories that just sticks with you. I cry rereading certain parts, I get excited when I notice foreshadowing for stuff that hadn't been revealed at my last reread. Sure, it has parts that are a bit meh or even yikes because it is aimed at teenage boys + cultural differences, but as a whole, I enjoy the story, the world, and the characters that populate it. It has comedy and tragedy and mysteries... not really a lot of romance but I'm personally fine with that. It's an adventure, and it doesn't forget that.

I can totally understand not fully believing a show as long-running as One Piece is as deep and involved as it is. After all, most shows that are this long-running ate usually that way because they're formulaic and episodic with little to no plot progression (such as The Simpsons or Detective Conan). It is VERY rare to find a story that is this long and has a constantly progressing plot that is still able to keep things interesting and maintain a high level of quality. So no, you're probably in the right for being skeptical about how deep or complex One Piece is or actually could be. I guess the best way to describe it is that One Piece is indeed very simple, in that the story being told at any given time and the action going on in the moment is rather straight-forward and easy to understand and follow. However, Oda has a way of being able to layer those story threads upon each other gradually and in a way that they all fit and mesh so incredibly well. And because he is constantly going back and involving past events and characters, the simple stories that have already been told don't dissappear and get forgotten but remain relevant, which just adds to the growing saga that just grows by adding more simple threads gradually over time. And when we do get a call-back to something that already happened, the reaction usually isn't "huh? what the hell is that?" but instead "Holy Hell, THAT'S connected to THIS?!?" And that's largely because past stories are told so we'll and completely that they resonate and stick with you, and thus have all the more impact when they are reintroduced into the story. This style of storytelling, of layering simple threads into a complex tapestry, can really only be told through a story that is this long and requires a LOT of both meticulous planning and great creativity to make things LOOK like they were meticulously planned when sometimes they weren't. And Oda is the kind of insane genius that's able to do it.

The characters are definitely very visually unique, but the women are all either shaped like a boulder, a heavily exaggerated hourglass, or a squat old person lol. Also, Arlong Park is definitely a good benchmark. It’s about 45 episodes in, which is normally a lot to ask someone to watch before they decide. Thing is, this series was meant to be hella long from the start and the first 100 eps are more or less a prologue for everything else to come. By AP, you get most of the crew for the early series and you get an idea for how Oda structures and creates his world. You’ll get a good sense of the action, emotion, and comedy styles you can expect from it too. If it hasn’t hooked you by then, it’s unlikely to change beyond that point.

I think it's the bonds between the characters and the convictions that they have to achieve their ambitions that drew me into and keeps me reading/watching onepiece years after I was introduced to it. The main crew are all wildly different people with different goals and life experiences, but they're family, and close in a way that is almost difficult to imagine. That kind of relationship and sharing your views and the good and bad of life draws you in, and makes you feel like a part of something massive. Especially in how it feels like it connects you to other fans across the world. The free-spirited nature and the fact that pirates don't give a fuck about what the status quo is, is also really inspiring in a way? The fact that being yourself and fulfilling your own ambitions is enough is something that I really connected to. Onepiece is an adventure that I'm glad i get to ride along with, and I look forwards to everything that's coming up as we hit the endgame.

I love that the world is always moving. One of my favorite examples is how in the first chapter you’re introduced to Coby, a useless kid that in any other anime would be a one off character. Some 500 chapters later, he shows up again, this time grown into a teen and making his own dream come true. This nobody is a somebody to oda. And he’s not the only one, there loads of characters that you meet multiple times throughout the series. Old enemies, and friends, one chapter they are laughing with the crew and a few chapters later they are pitted against them. All these lives carefully interwoven that really make you realize that you are watching a whole world unfold.

When getting into one piece people fear it's lenght, they look at the total number of chapters and say "I'll never catch up" or "it's too long" Thing is, it doesn't matter when you catch up, it's about the journey not the destination, it's not about being up to date, take it at your own pace and don't feel like you have to read it for others, read it when you feel like it, and you'll enjoy it that much more. I watched the anime for a long time but I shifted to the manga about 600+ episodes in, and I assure you it's a much more pleasant experience, One Piece is a joy to read volume to volume, and honestly reading it chapter to chapter isn't AS good, it's still amazing, but it's made to be read in bulk, and that is one of the best parts of being new, you get to digest as much content as you want at your own pace, if you truly like it, you'll find yourself flying through chapters. At the end of the day, if it's not for you, that's fine, even the most popular of series are not for everyone (ex: Bleach, has a lot of die hard fans, I kinda like it but nowhere near as much as some others do)

So many moments of OP can be perfectly distilled down to a single line of dialogue(ask any OP fan about how they feel about the phrase "nothing happened"). Anyway, I watched the Drum island arc for the first time over a decade ago and to this day whenever I remember the phase "When do you think people die?" I will full on ugly cry. This silly pirate manga has given me countless laughs, but when it makes you cry; OP is truly something special.

Id just watch the anime, unless of course you like reading. I watched it all in a little over a year and loved every single second. The pacing can be pretty slow on a few arcs but the majority moves at a good pace. There is almost no filler in One Piece so I don't know why he mentions this. It's like 1% filler compared to the 99% story. And even the filler is incredibly fun to watch and can be somewhat important for the story later on down the road. There's really nothing wrong with the anime besides some slow points in the story. It's a fantastic watch, I highly recommend!

I do remember having problems convincing others to watch it even back then for sometimes strange reasoning...like several people who were caught up with the other big three, Bleach and Naruto, but just wouldn't start One Piece for whatever reasons. It is very much worth watching or reading. Yeah the anime has some issues but it turns a 9 out of 10 story onto an 8 out if 10 story.

I got through the vast majority of what I had to catch up on in one sleepless night, I was that gripped by it. What really pulled me into the series was the characters, and the world, themes, and mysteries have only compounded the love I had for the series. The Strawhat Pirates embody what it means to be a found family in a way that very few casts manage across every artistic medium. A lot of that is simply by virtue of how much time we get to see them spend together. I'll tell you this: No matter how much One Piece's extreme length seems like a detriment or a barrier to entry, by the time you're invested in the crew and the world they inhabit, by the time you're caught up, you'll feel like it isn't long enough.

You sound like he needs to read it all. I disagree. I think he can stop at episode 53 (end of first saga) or episode 130 (end of second saga) and it would still be worth the watch. The answer to 'I can't read 800 chapters' is not '800 chapters is not that many actually' but 'then stop at chapter 50'.

Of reactors like yourself who were worried about going into it because of it's length, most of them I've seen have carried on after Arlong Park without any issue. in fact, most seem invested after about 5 episodes. XD A lot of fans will say "oh, it gets better here or here" but really, it's good eating from the very start. It just... gets better as it goes. And yes, it has its slow bits but it amps back up again not long after. There's really no story quite like it.

I can honestly say that One Piece is huge. The story starts "slow", but evolves fast. The information is given in a way that is coherent to the evolution of the characters and at the same time shows glimpses of what they need to reach. The world-building is awesome, from the start. The most coherent seen from a manga as long as this one.

One Piece manga is by far one of the best not only among manga but among of all kinds of fiction. One Piece is not only achieving in terms of entertainment aspect but also in the technical aspect of writing a story. The worldbuilding and lore, the unique art, individualities of the already well-written characters (both the leads and side characters), fore shading, the concepts relating the world's sociopolitical issues etc. Also those small details which were like insignificant in earlier chapters but would turn into a big plot surprise and twist after hundreds of chapters that would make you speechless like "wtf?!" and you would realize that everything actually makes sense.

Life is short and it's a long/beautiful story that your missing out on. Get off the fence and full send. I've consumed many stories over the course of my life (36 years) and One Piece has left a permanent mark on my mind. I have no regrets. Why do I like it? There's just too much to say. Find out for yourself why you love or dislike One Piece. Only you can derive your own meaning or satisfaction from a story. Of course it helps to get opinions from others, but set out on you're own journey, make your own decisions. Don't rely on hype or the mob to determine what has value in stories or entertainment. Those are my thoughts after watching your video. Also, being the geek that I am I consume theory/hype videos from various different youtubers that have added depth/sense of community to the experience of One Piece. Ohara, Grand Line Review, BDA Law to name a few. As well as conversations with people I meet. It's been an awesome experience so far. It's given me some pep to my step so to speak. Very much worth it in my opinion.

One Piece does have an absurd length, but if you sit down and give it a chance, you may not be able to put it down. When I was in graduate school, I binged the first 200 episodes (which is about all their was at the time) in a week instead of doing the studying and work I was supposed to be doing 😅 So that's become my pattern. I binge 200 episodes at a time, though I can't do it in a week these days, and I probably can't binge at all now. I've got to watch 300-400 at this point to catch up.

Along park is "the" point for the series if you don't enjoy it but then, you won't. The World building, and the fact that Luffy is only thr main character of his story, not the world's story. If the Strawhats didn't exist, the world would go on and be interesting in and of itself. And MANY of the characters could be the protagonist of a completely different story all in this same world. I've been reading weekly for.... 6- 7 years now and I still wait every week for that chapter to drop like a kid on Christmas morning.

The massive length of One Piece should be irrelevant to the question whether to watch it. The series is one long adventure. So you can stop at any point without detracting from the value of what you have watched. Even if the series had ended at 130 episodes (the end of the second saga), I would still recommend it. Personally, I would recommend it even if you knew in advance that you would have to stop at episode 53 (the end of the first saga). Also the answer 'start at chapter 1' to the 'question where to start?' actually sounds quite good because the first chapter is both enjoyable and gives a good first impression of what the series is like. I disagree that you should check out the manga. Both the anime and manga are good options, as long as you skip filler (the first filler episodes are episodes 54-60) and switch to the manga around episode 320 or roughly around episode 500.

Start from the first chapter or episode 1 of One Piece anime. There are anime where you can skip 4-5 arcs and still feel like nothing is missed out e.g. Dragon Ball. You can watch Dragon Ball Z without Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Super without the formers. For One Piece, it's the build up arc after arc, progression after progression. Missing one canon arc can be detrimental as a whole. There are hints, layers being implanted and only after looking back, you will realised what the author have done. He sneaky by the way. Oda's a teaser, long game story teller and the satisfaction is guaranteed. Just like any human, we all do have bad days, not so good moments. This applies to him as well but I can guarantee that 95% of the time, he delivered. The 5% is your opinion, perspective, things that are yet to be shown and his teasing. Good tease.

One of the things I want to point out though: I REALLY enjoyed MOST of the filler from the anime. Judging from comments on Crunchyroll and KZread, it seems there's only 1 real reason why people dislike the filler: It's not part of the original manga story. Like, the filler is actually good? And why shouldn't it? It's usually just a mini-arc of the Strawhat Pirates getting on an island they did not plan to get to. It fits in the story, it's a simple "break" and it actually makes sense: not every island must have a corrupt leader for them to stop.
