    I'm ever more thankful for this One Piece community, both in the creation of videos like this to offer guidance for new fledgling pirates, or for the enthusiasm and passion that permeates throughout every comment and suggestion I have encountered. You are the real treasure. I'm just here for the adventure of continuously discovering more about this gem of a community!

    Outside looking in, it can seem like a lot of the web of world building is fan made, but i assure you, weve been trained to be this way by Oda-sensei's skill. He has proven time and time again that we need to pay close attention to these details. This nature is in my opinion the real genre of one piece. It is a mystery. The entire ride we are learning the world with our characters, narration is notably a HUGE rarity. We as viewers are along with the ride, only equipped with sprinkles of information the crew doesnt have. We want the protagonist to achieve his goal because we are invested in it as well, we crave that answer and that entire journey. Welcome aboard if you decide to go the whole route.

    😄 🤣 TRUE. I think for this video, however, I just specifically meant Momotaro and its influence and prevalence in Japanese culture and media. I couldn't help but think that Luffy exploding out of the barrel wasn't at least a passing nod at Momotaro, and if you extrapolate it to the nth degree, I could even see Goku coming from that white and purple-y pink-ish space ball as a passing nod as well. Unless you meant about sneaking dolphin meat into tuna onigiri? It might have been one of those urban legends the veteran English teachers told us newbies. Or maybe it was because of that Blackfish documentary being so new and widely talked about at the time. But yeah, it's crazy how much we eat is just chemically induced fattening. Appreciate your thoughts 🙏

    I'd been waffling back and forth on whether to go with the manga first or the anime, but after seeing the "Why You Should Watch/ Read One Piece" video, it really helped me understand how intentional every panel Oda makes is, and I feel like I want to see the moments play out in the anime first, so that I can find a far deeper appreciation when I begin come to it in the manga. If you liked my stories of Japan so far, wait until I get a wild hair one day and start reacting to Fairy Tail! 🧚‍♂️ That one will always have a special place in my heart because I discovered it. No recommendations, or KZread videos, or friends already watching it (like DBZ). It was solely my own unique discovery, and it captured my heart by episode 3, and it's how I made so many wonderful memories and connections with students, too! I definitely want to do a reaction series to that someday as well! But for now, the dawn of adventure awaits!

    Something that these videos do not mention I think is the fact that this world is developing post apocalypse of a great war and due to that great war, there are islands that seem so backward and others that use technology of the future. And it's not just islands, but also the many side stories, characters so diverse or traumatic pasts because they are not living in a period of peace.

    I'll do a bit of explaining about the 4Kids-dub, because it's an interesting case-study in failure, and the main reason the series never really broke into the mainstream in the west: The production-company that acquired the rights to One Piece, was in charge of dubbing series like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. They were catering for younger demographics, which in their minds they needed to scrub the original series' clean of most japanese influences, and refit the show into American sensibilities concerning cultural norms, coarse language, violence and sexuality. Pokemon, for example, edited all references to "Onigiri" into being referenced as "jelly donuts", with some scenes even having images of riceballs replaced with sandwitches etc. In One Piece's case, they took on something they clearly did not understand. One Piece, despite it's optimism and the theme of adventure, was aimed at teens, and included depictions of blood and violence right from the start. For example, one of the first storylines involves the characters infiltrating a naval base, where the guns of every single marine were either drawn over to be waterpistols, or were rewritten in the show to make it clear that they were non-lethal. At one point, a gun pointed at a character's head was replaced by a cartoon hammer. They drew over spikes that pierced a person's arm to add suction cups. And of course they deleted a lot of cleavage. Added to that, in the process of writing the dialogue, the production-team made every effort to add their own jokes, (dated) cultural references and off-beat humour into the story, in an effort to make the show even sillier. This clashes heavily against the self-seriousness of the original narrative, and made the mood-switch the show needed to make in order to hit it's dramatic moments almost impossible. The casting of the show didn't exactly help either, as they were working on no budget, and a very limited cast of voices. They might not have realized at the start, that the show was not going to be episodic, and was going to have a single continuing narrative touching on heavy themes, such as loss, slavery, starvation and the ethics of the state's monopoly on violence. And their contribution to that narrative was to add more puns. Soo... the show did not do very well Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh already existed, and were a better fit for commercial artistic bankruptcy, because they were not art-driven franchises. . A lot of kids thought OP just looked weird, and decided to watch the edgy, cool cartoons, where everyone was wearing black and bleeding instead.

    This is such an impressively comprehensive look back. Wow. Thank you for taking the time to share all this! I grew up without cable through the 90s (apart from Star Wars episodes V and VI VHS recorded from Showtime on the VCR. Haha.) So I was about 13 or 14 when we got satellite TV, and I discovered this thing called Toonami that my friends were into. Namely, a show I had watched at a friend's called Dragon Ball Z. I never really strayed to any other anime outside of it (and I've still never seen it all!) Exceot for Samurai Pizza Cats (which sounds like it suffered a similar fate to One Piece!). Haha! So I was much older when I learned about One Piece. And I'll admit, I shared similar sentiments if not really being too keen on the art style. Heck, even being in Japan and inundated with One Piece everywhere I still didn't have the same appreciation for it. I've had so many missed opportunities, but now, I think I understand I'm at the right place, the right time, and in the right frame of mind to enjoy and appreciate this phenomenal narrative achievement. It's thanks to comments and willingness of this incredible community to help bolster that appreciation with insights I might never have gleaned otherwise. I'm truly thankful for the time you have taken to bring me along on your One Piece journey, and I'm so thankful you took the time to be part of mine! 🙏 ☝️✌️

  • @Noxiddar

    @Noxiddar

    9 ай бұрын

    I really don't blame folks like that. If I've learned anything, it's that One Piece is a deeply personal journey for so many. History hadn't proved a LA could work. And nobody wants to live through seeing their favorite anything dragged through the mud by the outside public world. And then I think disbelief was the next stage for many. How could a LA become the number 1 show on Netflix in 80+ something countries!? Then, there was the rationalization group. The people that could acknowledge people liked the OPLA, but they weren't experiencing the full and proper story. The whole journey from pre-production to post is a microcosm of great change throughout history. I find myself in the camp of appreciation. The LA stirred a creative passion in me. I knew it was there because of the love poured into the show, but more importantly, the love poured into the story. And that led me on a journey that has brought me to where I am today, reacting to the anime and soon to be enjoying the authoritative source of the manga as well. We are in a new Age of Pirates! I, for one, am ready for this adventure! Thanks for the comment! I enjoyed the discussion! ☝️✌️🏴‍☠️

    No problem! I had the anime in dub on in the background (second monitor) while I was editing, and let it play up to about episode 44. I didn't get much out of it since I was mostly editing gaming videos. But some of the One Piece creators I had been watching while getting hyped for the OPLA mentioned that that was where the Live Action seemed to go up to. So I turned on the dub while I worked because the channels I had been watching were getting a little free and loose with spoilers in their speculation. I figured if I'm going to get spoiled by anything, it should be by the story itself. (I had no intention of reacting to it then, but now I'm going back through it since it would be weird to start anime reactions at episode 45) But by this particular video, I had the anime on in the background, binged the LA series. This video is part of 4 videos recommended to me to help give me insight and appreciation into Oda as I had decided I wanted to do a reaction to the anime bh watching it properly. It's a bit of a muddied history. Because I had 500 gaming videos on the channel and unlisted them recently, and had no intention of doing reactions beyond the Final Live Action trailer, and then my review. But the OP community showed up and showed me that this is what they'd like to see. I'm currently reacting to the anime subbed and enjoying actually focusing on it this time through, now having become a One Piece fan!

    Are you meaning this particular video? I did cut portions of it, but not because of copyright. The worst offender is my central air kicked on halfway through the video and really degraded the audio quality and overall viewing experience for the middle portion of the video. I'll not make that mistake again. I also tend to cut portions if I don't... have a reaction to it. There are a lot of things discussed that I have no real reference for, and so I don't have much to comment on. I can't stand reaction videos where a whole video plays out and the reactor doesn't... react. You know? Lastly, I never want to be a substitute for the original. My reaction should largely focus on how the original video affects me. Whether it's triggering a memory or giving me insight. You'll hear me constantly referring that everyone should go support the original video. No offense taken! I am thankful and grateful you took the time to comment.
