Today's video is pretty straight forward. I am replacing an oil pressure sending unit on my Silverado. Upon start up I get a warning chime that the oil pressure is low. Watch this video if you would like to learn how to change your oil pressure sending unit as well.

    I did this oil pressure sensor job in my 2006 Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0L V8 after I noticed the oil pressure gauge was nearly maxed out at 80 PSI even with the engine not running. This job was extremely difficult. I couldn’t see any of the area behind the engine. I had to use my phone camera to survey the area then do everything by touch and feel. I barely had space to squeeze my hand behind the engine block to reach the sensor. After I disconnected the cable from the sensor, I turned the key without starting engine and the gauge was at zero. So, I knew this was certainly a bad sensor. I had to remove the 13mm bolt next to the sensor in order to get a 27mm 8-point socket on it; this didn’t work at all. I tried a 27mm 6-point socket, which was better but wasn’t fully seated and I feared I might break the bad sensor if I forced it. So, I sprayed some penetrating oil on the sensor threads overnight while I obtained the actual 1 1/16” socket made for the sensor and it worked perfectly. Of course, GM engineers that planned the location for the sensor left me bloody and bruised after working back there and my knees on top of the engine. But, in the end, success. I refuse to let inanimate objects defeat me. And, I think I save hundreds of dollars if I had to pay a mechanic to remove the entire intake for much easier access. Doing this job on the on trucks with smaller engines is probably much easier.

    I finished the sensor relocation on my 2003 5.7 Corvette today. I did this job about 2 years ago but I didn't install the braided extender hose at that time. So, here we are again. (I bought the extender hose with fittings on Amazon for $99). I didn't want to disturb any more than necessary and I didn't want to drill any holes. I did not remove anything except the plastic engine cover. Although it was a royal pain in the butt, I was able to disconnect the old sensor and pull it out. For me, the hardest part was threading the extender hose into the engine. I could not get the threads lined up while rotating the hose. I had my son come over and somehow he got it threaded on his first try. 8-) Now, my oil pressure gage no longer thinks it's a windshield wiper. It was continuously slamming full scale and back to zero. Now it sits rock steady at 42 PSI at cold idle. If (when?) this new sensor fails, it will be very easy to replace it.

    I can't imagine why anyone would want to relocate the oil pressure sending unit!🤣😂. I imagine if I have another LS engine, I will do the relocate like you did. Where does it relocate to? Thanks for watching and telling us what you did.

  • @GregSr

    @GregSr

    Жыл бұрын

    @@DCAutoEnhancement The relocation is simply a vote of "no confidence" on the new sensor. They either come from Mexico or China. According to the forums, The AC Delco part is also junk. They are so unreliable, it's almost a certainty that it will fail again. So, by relocating the sensor and setting it on top of the engine, I would not have to go through the hassle of dealing with changing it again. The last one I installed failed after a little more than 2 years.

    The issue with the socket is that there are several types of sensors. The earlier ones seem to have (not always) the long style 1 pin. I have also seen a long style 3 pin and the you have the “short ones” like on the vid. On the long one you can not get a regular deep well socket to reach. The short style, yes the deewell will work. Not worth taking the risk of breking the sensor and having to remove the intake manifold to persuade the broken sensor out. Last sensor i did acted the same way as the one he put on there. It took a few startup cycles for it to start acting “normal” maybe an air pocket under the sensor? Or oil didn’t get to it right away? Almost pulled the new sensor and replaced it again, but after a few cycles like that it seemed to me that it calibrated itself. I flipped the key on and it went to “max” then back to “min”. After this, every time i drove the truck, the gauge seemed less “twitchy”. I was comfortable doing this because i physically broke the old sensor, so i knew oil pressure was good. If not, i would had checked the pressure with a mechanical gage, to be on the safe side. Here is a tip, if you are about to do this job, wrapp a piece of tape on the fuel line retainer clips. They will get you, and its difficult to remove blood stains from the engine bay.

    I just installed my New oil pressure sending unit on my 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 pick up truck and it’s still running low oil pressure. The engine is running fine I don’t hear any ticking noise in the engine nor the engine light is on so quick question what is the problem? I lost oil pressure four months ago but the engine started up two weeks after the problem and a lotta of my mechanics was saying it could be the oil pump but they told me to start off first thing with the oil sending unit.

    I'm trying to replace the oil sending unit (OSU) on a 2007 H2 Hummer 6.0 L vortec engine.. I have the new G.M. (OSU) and special deep socket for removal. My problem is I'm a big guy and I can't even get my hand back there to remove the electrical connector off of the sensor to even attempt to replace it. There's nowhere to really position your body. Keep in mind on the H2 Hummer the hood lift straight up and stays at a 90° angle when open so you can only work from the sides of the vehicle / engine bay. I've attempted to get back in there with a flashlight but there is the fuel rail in the way, evap lines, electrical wires etc. So Any suggestions from an experience mechanic that has done this before on my particular vehicle? Any input, photos, suggestions would be appreciated. This is truly a nightmare to get done. I need some guidance Thanks in advance 👍🇺🇸💪
