Replacing an Oil Sending Unit on a Chevy 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 -1999-2006 Chevy Silverado Oil Sending Unit

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Chances are, if you keep your 1999-2006 Chevy or GM pickup long enough, you'll have to replace the oil sending unit, or pay someone to do it for you. Symptoms include erratic oil pressure, leaking oil beneath your pickup, excessive pressure on the gauge, etc. This can get expensive!
The job of actually replacing the GM oil sending unit is not that difficult. It's actually getting to it that makes the job horrible!
Typically you'll have two choices. Either pull the manifold off or remove the fuel line and maybe a vacuum line and squeeze your hand way back in there.
Not an easy thing to do for someone who has ham-hock sized hands!
Tools you will need to do this job:
*Oil Pressure Switch for GM and Chevrolet Pickups - amzn.to/2JBRt2z
* Special 1 1/16" or 27mm deep well socket - amzn.to/2DmXFeu
* 3/8" drive ratchet, preferably with swivel head like this one -- amzn.to/2SJfau9
* 3/8" drive, 5-inch extension (I recommend buying the kit because you may need the short extension as well -- amzn.to/2SJyYgU
* High-pressure gas line disconnects - amzn.to/2JJo8DL
I've seen some estimates from people online that the cost for a dealer to do this 45-minute job was nearly $500. Other prices I've seen for a repair shop to do the job was in the $150 to $300 price range. So you can save yourself a lot of money replacing the Chevrolet oil pressure switch (sending unit) yourself!

    Glad to hear it Dew. Yeah, it can be a bear to find and get to without removing anything. First time I did it I removed the intake manifold. Super easy to get to, but took a few hours to remove the manifold and put everything back. You'd think they could put those oil sending units in an easier to access location!

    I just changed mine too and it's still reading low. 0-20 psi. Just changed out the oil pump and o ring also about a month ago and was reading great. 40cruising- 60 on hwy. My old sensor was cracked so I figured it would've fixed it but it's still reading low

    That's odd. I was thinking the O ring until I saw you mention it. I guess it could be a bad sensor. Maybe see if they can test it?

    There is a little screen Filter in where you screw the new oil sending unit….. that screen filter can get clogged up and give false readings and people think it’s a bad oil sending unit. If you replace the oil sending unit pull out the filter and toss it in the trash, unless you don’t change your oil on a regular basis.

    Howdy, was your oil leak coming down from the area where one would think that the rear main seal needed to be replaced? I changed the rear main as well as another seal by the torque converter but the damn thing is still leaking so this is my next solution.

  • @BlueCollarDIY

    @BlueCollarDIY

    Yes it was. I was worried I'd have to replace the rear main seal. But my oil sending unit was leaking a lot of oil. The sending unit had almost cracked in-two.

    Would the oil sending unit be a issue with low oil pressure and lifters nocking or oil pump and the o ring in the pan?

    I doubt the oil sending unit in your 2006 4.8 chevy would be causing those issues. I would suspect it's more likely the the o ring and oil pump. That's what was wrong with mine. The lifters knocking could be do to not getting enough oil or it could be because of something totally different.

    @@johnjohnston1022 did you get it figured out? My 2005 suburban only ticks when i go offroad and hit potholes. I can shut truck off while downhill and restart it and ticking will go away. Im thinking it is my oring in pickup tube. Low oil pressure. 25 psi on cold start...about 15 hot idle.

    i ran into this issue,i had a defective oil filter,the flap inside the oil filter was messsed up,i changed the filter and no more lifter clacking or starved top end for oil,i had this happen on several gm vehicles,i would try replacing the oil filter and restart the vehicle,the lifter clacking should go away instantly,if it does not change then remove oil pressure sending unit and see if you can check the screen for debris and perform an oil pressure test with an external gauge to check pressure,engine cold should be over 40psi,engine hot should be above 20psi for an acceptable oil system
