Percy grabbing the Wraith, hurling it into a wardrobe, and curbstomping the hell out of it while screaming his head off is probably my favorite action beat of the entire first season.
The reason behind Pike's choice at the end is because Ashley Johnson the player/voice was filming the tv show Blindspot in New York, so she was gone for a lot of campaign 1& 2. She would skype in sometimes when she could.

Fun fact, Matt Mercer, the DM of Critical Role is the voice of Sylas Briarwood.
Vex and Vax, Laura Bailey and Liam O'Brian respectively, got their names because the players wanted to mess with the DM. The original name of the Vox Machina party was The S.H.I.T, or, Super High Intensity Team. It was changed to Vox Machina, literally voice machine, specifically for the stream.

And Sam (Scanlan) also half joked that if he died he was coming back as a character named "Vix" to further fuck with Matt. While he never did it, he did say in the campaign 2 wrap up that "Vix" was the starting point of trying to name his campaign two character though it did evolve quite a bit from there and was not Vix

Pike was missing for a chunk of the original campaign because her player had a job filming in NY and seldom could even Skype in, so they have kept that dynamic of the party having to lose her and go in with no cleric rather than rewriting the scenario for the show, which I appreciate.

@@aaronbourque5494 There was some stuff going about on Reddit about it a month after season 1 finished. But yeah I know, but I'd like it now.
Everlight, based on Sarenrae from Pathfinder is a deity that teaches temperance and patience in all things and the problem she was really having, as you might have noticed from earlier episodes was that she was indulging a little bit too much in things, so this trip of discovery kind of works to explain away her absence. But what really happened was that the player was busy with her real life acting career and couldn't show up for game sessions during much of this arc or future arcs either honestly, and thus she was sort of gone "finding herself".

Pike coming in with Little foot's mom vibes in her goodbye
They always took the bear in the stream, Laura Bailey, Vex's voice actress, always insisted (though Sam Reigal, Scan's voice actor, really didn't like Trinket, and the effort involved in keeping him involved, and constantly joked about killing him off to ease the burden on the party).
Vax was only temporarily under Silas' control. That broke as soon as he was bitten

I'm sure there's also a willingness factor too. As in if you're buddy buddy with Dracula and want to become his literal BFF then I doubt you have to go through the whole 0 hp by bite thing. Ultimately though it boils down to the DM and their interpretation of the rules. As Jack Sparrow once said "the rules are more like guidelines really"

@tails322 Unless there's major house ruling, it's standard that you have to be reduced to zero (or killed outright) by the bite to turn. I can't see most DMs scrapping the mechanic.

From the D&D Monster Manual... > The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0. A humanoid slain in this way and then buried in the ground rises the following night as a vampire spawn under the vampire's control.
Vex Vax Vox...and when my character dies I'm coming back as Vix. Matt:you can find another GM
Pike's VA, Ashley Johnson, was away for many sessions (of both campaign 1 and 2) to record Blind Spot so they added this scene to explain Pike's absence. In c2 it was handled better as her character had character reasons for constantly disappearing from the party.
What's funny is Sam Riegel, who voices and plays Scanlan Shorthalt, once joked on stream that if Scanlan bit the dust he'd come back to play a character called "Vix", just to mess with Matt Mercer, the DM. Matt told Sam that if that day should come, they were getting a new DM. XD
I like to think right when the bolt hits the head of the wraith NWA's "straight out of compton" starts playing.
I don't know why this "one bite turns you into a vampire" idea persists as a default assumption when in the VAST majority of vampire stories, that's NOT how it works. Most vampire stories, there are three steps: 1) vampire bites/feeds on you 2) vampire feeds you some of its blood 3) you die, and rise later as a vampire I mean, that's been the MAIN way it works since "DRACULA" yet the idea of the single-bite turn persists. Drives me bonkers, man.

In dnd you only become a vampire if the bite reduces you to 0 hp and there are multiple ways to undo it. Ultimately if you want your play group can homebrew how vampirism works.

Yeah idk where it comes from either but I remember starting to watch The Vampire Diaries also thinking if a vampire bites you you'll turn. Even some of the characters thought that too. But you turn if you die with vampire blood in your system, in that show at least. The only one I can think of that works that way is in Skyrim, but that's not a bite its them using that drain spell or whatever. Maybe its from some folklore stories or maybe people be confusing it with zombies. xD

If I had to guess, it would probably be because of Twilight... the same series that makes vampires become disco balls under sunlight instead of dying.
Even if I thought that Silas had something on Vax from biting him, Pike healed him using divine magic afterwards, so I'd assume that would fix it.
Ant simps for azula? (I mean who doesn't?) Then you're gonna love this... The VA for Delilah Briarwood is the same VA for Azula... you're welcome ant XD
22:59 once again guessing everything spot on. Also it wasn't until campaign three that Ashley Johnson (voice and creator of Pike) got to be there for the whole thing. She was a film and tv actor on top of voice acting and there were many points of time in campaign one and two where she would be gone for week after week because she was out of state or country working on projects. Canonically Pike's connection with her goddess is momentarily cut off so she stays behind to repair it, astral projecting in to save her friends at the right time, but IRL she was in a different time zone, I can't remember if she skyped in for that part or if Matt played it out.
How is she so good at predicting things? 😆
"Eat a fucking sandwich" My second favourite line of this show, the first is at episode 7 or 8, can't really remember, it's been some time.
"This is your 'leave now and come back stronger' arc." More like, "This is your 'the player can't make it to multiple sessions due to her job and needs their character taken out of the story temporarily' arc." Ashley was a busy woman in those first two campaigns.
The trick the helped me with Vex and Vax (everyone suffers from their names at first, lol) is their full names- Vex'ahlia the girl, Vaxildan, the boy, voice of Illidan Stormrage from WoW (although Laura Bailey voices Jaina Proudmore in WoW, that name isn't nearly so helpful 😁)
Prolly know this already but Sylas' va is Matt Mercer (Who is the dub actor for Jotaro)
its wild watching this so much later because you talk about fangirling over Azula WHNE HER VOICE ACTOR IS IN THE SHOW!!!! and i cant tell you! because im from the future!
18:31 Another Mercer easter egg
gotta love matt as Sylas
Grog is a goliath, not an orc
Doesn’t Grey DeLisle also voice Lady Briarwood? If Ant likes Azula I would think he would be simping more over Delilah

WHICH ONE?!?
So sadly Vax doesn't turn into a vampire from this. The way vampirism works in D&D is that the bite has to reduce your hit points to zero, i.e. kill you. Since Vax survived the bite, he was only severely injured rather than getting turned. He'd 100% rock it as a vampire though. I mentioned last time that Vox Machina's keep in the game was based off Castle Greyskull from the 80's He-Man cartoon. Well this is the episode where you can see it. In the exterior shots of the keep's grounds where we see the whole compound, the keep itself (the central building) still has the general shape of the 80's He-Man castle, minus for that show's giant skull of course. Speaking of the keep, the massive table in the center of the dining room was actually the exact table they had for Campaign 2, which was the current campaign when the show was being developed. You can see the slot where Matt sits as the DM and how from there the others could sit in the two angled sections of the far edge of the table, allowing for the players and cameras to be set up in opposing Y shapes to best fit a stream. Matt has one camera on him, half the party sits on one side and half on the other, displayed on the stream as the "upper" and "lower" tables with Matt's view off to one side. It's funny you keep mentioning Avatar, Keyleth's entire journey is essentially Aang's. Marisha Ray, Keyleth's player, is a big Avatar fan and modeled Keyeth's mission after Aang's. She's a member of the Ashari, a druidic tribe that guards the points around the globe where the barriers between the Prime Material plane (our world) are thin and can cross over into the different Elemental planes of Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. Keyleth specifically is from the Air Ashari tribe. Every generation, one person is sent out to meet with the other Ashari tribes and maintain communication with them, learning their ways and becoming a leader of the community in the process. She already has her Air powers and as of the start of the game's stream she had also already visited the Earth Ashari and passed their trials to learn some of their powers (though that might not have been the case with this show's version of events). The process of travelling to and meeting the other Ashari tribes is called the Aramente and is Keyleth's personal storyline across the entire campaign as she pops over to see the other Ashari whenever the party are close to their locations. Pike leaving the party here is a way of incorporating her frequent absences in the game. For all of Campaign 1 and the majority of Campaign 2, her player Ashley Johnson had a regular role on the TV show Blindspot. Problem is Blindspot filmed in New York while Critical Role filmed in L.A. This meant that she was unavailable for long stretches of time. She'd pop in between filming runs if she had a couple months off or if she'd be able to have the Thursday night they film CR off to Skype in remotely if she could, but she was gone a lot across both campaigns as as result. Fortunately ever since Blindspot ended Ashley has been back full time and has been making up for lost time by absolutely killing it with her Campaign 3 character.
