The people hangin for the tree dressed like the gang was an instant mood shift in the streams. This was probably the firs time we got something this slowly build up and dramatically revealed by matt and he did it masterfully. Such a memorable moment.

Ye. To anyone who haven't seen the actual campaign, I highly recommend seeing clips of the original version of that scene. Even without pictures, Matt's vivid descriptions and the crew's gradual realisation is just... haunting.

The way Matt kept relentlessly on, describing these hanged people in _way_ more detail than he would normally use for mere "set dressing", it immediately started raising the tension around the table, as everyone picked up that this was something important. Marisha (Keyleth) frantically scribbling notes, so they don't miss any details - 'cause she's an absolute _beast_ for note-taking - and everyone frantically trying to work out what Matt was telling them. It was Laura (Vex) who said it out loud first, but if you watch the faces, you can tell from the way Marisha freezes suddenly and from the horrified look on her face, that she figured it out first, which may be why Keyleth gets the line in the show. And because the players didn't get to see these people be invited for a "dinner and a show" by the Briarwoods, like we did in this show, they had to ask to be sure: "Wait, do they look like us… or were they _made_ to look like us." In other words, did this group get mistaken for Vox Machina by accident, or… But the brutally nailed-on antlers on the Keyleth stand-in, and the faux symbol of Sarenrae on the little girl made it clear: the Briarwoods murdered a bunch of innocent people and strung them up in the holy Sun Tree, just to send a message to Vox Machina: "We know you're coming, and _we know who you are!"_

It will likely be explored next season.
When Matt Mercer described the sun tree filled with the corpses of the innocent dressed to look like vox machina... One person in the player group understood about 30 seconds before the rest did. And she was horrified, when everyone else started to question what was happening she just responded with "It's US!" And everyone else in the group immediately fell into tears and sadness. I have never seen a DM absolutely emotionally destroy a party in such a short time. I swear to God from the second he starts describing the corpses on the tree until every player character realizes what is going on is less than a minute. And many of the actors were smiling at first by the end 2 we're crying and everyone else was completely heart broken

@@ShadowyFox_86 It's because Percy didn't want to be seen by anyone. Even in that comparison vid alone he asks if there's anyone around, checks for traps, etc.
Just because I've noticed that you kept calling Grog an orc I thought I'd comment on that one. He's actually a Goliath, a half-giant. That just basically means on a family tree he's closer to an actual Stone Giant than an orc.
I agree Vex is in the wrong, but before you say she's done nothing, she identified that there was a dragon threat in the castle, came up with the plan to kill Brimscythe, and did spot the wolf thingies to give them a chance. She's absolutely too clingy, but she's not useless... Also, as others said, that last scene is so good, but yeah, the tabletop version was freaky too. If you're interested you can find a good comparison of the two scenes cut together. With the slower descriptions of the people hanging, the slow revelation of what was going on was awesome. This is the first show I've seen you do and I'm loving the reactions!

To be fair, the reason Vax is so close and clingy to Vex is because of their past. As half-elves, they were shunned by their father and his sort in the elvish city they were trained and taught in, and their mother and her village were slaughtered by a dragon. They've had only each other to rely on as family and for survival for pretty much up until they met the rest of Vox Machina.

it is funny how Alicia and Ant can see plot twists coming a mile away but sometimes misjudge characters harshly. I think it's in part because they are doing a youtube video and need to constantly pause for commentary so they might miss some things or forget something because they went on a tangent, which is perfectly. Vex being jealous is completely understandable considering it's implied that for the longest time they only had each other, and at this point they (or atleast she) haven't truly bonded with the rest of vox machina. It's a nice character flaw for her to overcome in future seasons. And yeah they are all competent and she did alot when it came to the dragon, like everyone did.
@ShadowyFox_86

Its funny, because if you ask most of the team they'll say there isn't a leader of Vox Machina. If you ask Vax, it's Vex. She's the strategist of the bunch. Her behavior, while shitty, is understandable. Until Vox Machina, it was just her and Vax. She actually is forcing herself to find things to dislike about Kiki because she's terrified that Vax will leave and she will be alone, which is a pretty understandable trauma response based on what the twins have endured.

It makes sense she's clingy. Syngorn is in the middle of knowhere, when Vax and Vex left the city, they lived alone in the woods for years, they basically only knew eachother
Vex and Vax grew up only really having each other, their family life is complicated but basically they grew up surrounded by a people that viewed them as scum. So they ran away and watched each other's backs for years. Now that Vax us showing an interest in Keyleth, Vex is having trouble dealing with her fear of being abandoned by the one person who has been by her side from day 1. Of course, Vex herself is opening up to a specific member of the group and that might cause more Discord in the future.

I saw a psychologist talk about it and she has an avoidant personality style. That's why she's so sarcastic, even to the people she cares about. It's dropped once in the first season that they are half-elfs, so it's no surprise they were shunned as children. Elves tend to look down on Humans in D&D settings and Humans are jealous of the Elves' long lives. And half-elves tends to be stuck in the middle, not fitting in with either side. Too Human to fit in with the Elves and too Elvish to fit in with the Humans.
You should watch the stream moment when they find the hanging bodies. I forgot how based the party was, there is so many times Alicia and ANT were like "THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!" and "EXACTLY!"
Vex isn't jealous, she's cautious. She knows that Keyleth presents an anchor that will stop her brother from running if they need to. In the past they escaped from bad situations together, cutting ties and slipping away. She's afraid that they might need to run again, and her brother wouldn't come with her. She also knows that Vax is the one of them who can be reckless. It's nothing as petty as jealousy.
tldr on why Vex was such a meany to Kiki. Basically her and her brother have severe trust issues due to thier history. I dont remember if the show talks about this or not but its something that came up before the events in the show at least on the table top games. Basically they grew up aroung elitists stuck up assholes who looked down on "half breeds" leading them to run away. @slayeroffurries1115 Funny enough according to Critrole stats the top 3 PCs with the highest kill counts are Keyleth (116), Pike(109), and Percy (83) Grog and Vax are definitely the people the party saids to handle real strong things that need to get dead those but 3 most often then not are doing big crowd controlling attack.
They really show the growth of Keyleth incredibly well through the first season. At the start of actual play, Marisha Ray, the voice actor/player of Kiki, wasn't very experienced and made some pretty bad decisions in combat but as she got experience, she became a confident bad ass powerhouse. So the way they have Keyleth be the frightened bean that slowly becomes KEYLETH OF THE ASHARI is fucking amazingly accurate. You have no idea what you are in for lol the Vox Machina campaign is the kind of D&D all players wish to play. For Vex, I think it's less about Vax finding love and more about Vex being afraid of somehow "losing" Vax. She spent most of her life just her and Vax, so she can't yet understand you don't have to be limited to just one person you can trust and love... you can expand your circle. Honestly, pretty accurate for how people in that situation might react and they do a great job showing her come to terms with it all.
Vex has arguably done the most compared to other people. She's the plan person and their resident haggler though we see less of that due to pacing purposes. Right now in the story....Pike is probably the weakest link through no fault of her own, and besides her because Pike doesn't really count, maybe Percy?

The scene in episode 3 where Percy shot off the hand of the Briarwood's aide was Talesin Jaffe (the player that plays Percy) saying "I want this to get f**king dark!" The end of Episode 5 was Matt Mercer (the DM, as well as the voice of Cylas in the show) saying "Hold my beer..."
That scene, by the way...*that scene*? That was SO muted in impact from when Matt Mercer let it out at the table.
So in regards to Vex and Keyleth in the animated series: Complicated Vex backstory is a thing, yes, but there’s some meta reason why Vex is extra harsh on Keyleth. Even in the campaign, Vex has always been one to deliver tough love, but the animated series kinda leans hard on it, because it doesn’t have the benefit of having a long time to establish this. Keep in mind, the campaign had more than 20 episodes, each one 3+ hours, of extablishing the relationships of the characters up to the Briarwood arc. In that time Vex was tough on Keyleth, but more in a mentor teaching a new adventurer. But they’ve also had downtime when Vex was also supportive of her as well. In the limited timeframe of twelve 30 minute episodes, the show doesn’t have time to show every small interaction, so we only get to see Vex’s tough side. This is to establish her character growth we see later in the series and the reveal in season 2 of WHY Vex is so prickly and intolerant of coddling others.

Can you guess what my favourite thing to watch newcomers react to is in this season? C’mon take a guess, don’t leave me hangin’...
I already loved Keyleth, but that GROWL! Let's just say i rewatched that scene quite a few times
That moment when I just make some tacos myself and am taking my first bite right at the start of this video when you called out Ant for eating one. The timing on that... Vax's line while browsing at Gilmore's, "dagger, dagger, dagger, aha wooden stake!" is another fun inclusion of the players' catch phrases they say during gameplay after episode 2's line from Grog "I would like to rage!" While that was Travis (Grog's player) letting the DM know he's using his Barbarian Rage ability, this is Liam (Vax) describing his attacks of throwing his daggers as a ranged attack. In the game he gets the ability to throw 3 daggers in quick succession and has three different daggers he uses for different types of damage. His description of the attack is he'll just go "I'm going to attack this guy here. Dagger, dagger, dagger..." as he rolls. Fun tongue-in-cheek uses of their real world phrases in the show and there will be more to come. Vex is 100% the self proclaimed party treasurer, holding the party funds and does everything she can to haggle and negotiate for discounts everywhere. The worst thing to do to her is make her pay full price for *anything*. Yeah, Grog and Pike are besties due to a shared backstory and they've been together as best friends ever since. Anytime she's gone from the group, Grog is the one that misses her the most. Another little tradition during the cart chase. The horses *never* survive. In the game's version of events here they had left them on the side of the road in some mountains while camping in a cave...and the horses were eaten by a pack of harpies. Of all the times across the campaigns that they've bought, rented, or borrowed a group of mounts, they've only really brought them back maybe 3 times. The strangest kills the party mentions here are all actual moments from the game (except Scanlan's). Vax's was a moment from the arc immediately before the Briarwoods where the party had gotten involved in a monster slaying guild and had to take on a couple of contracts to prove themselves. Vax and his half of the team went up against a Rakshasa, a devil that looks like a tiger man with his hands on backwards. Kill it and it just reforms in the hells to come back for you at a later time. Due to copyright they couldn't give it the reversed hands here (same reason why the gods are being referred to by their epitaphs rather than by name such as Sarenrae instead of the Everlight), so he's just a tiger man here. Keyleth's was from the very first arc of the show right after they started streaming. They were exploring the Underdark and at one point were fighting a group of Duregar (dark dwarves, sort of like how the Drow are to Elves) and Keyleth pushes one into a lava flow to try and kill it. Well it was taking too long and she started freaking out before using her wind powers to try and push his head under to kill him faster, even saying the "go to sleep, go to sleep!" thing while doing it. She made it worse though by accidentally cooling the surface of the lava, encasing the Duregar in rock and having him suffocate in stone while his lower body melted under the lava. Grog's is from the same arc (changed location for the show to make it visually different) where he killed a Bulette. They harvested the armored plates the creature had and actually made the armor that Trinket the Bear wears out of it. Vex's whole issue is that she and Vax had run away from home together and had relied solely on each other (and Trinket) to survive for years before getting caught up in the group. She's not so much jealous of Keyleth as she is afraid that Vax getting with her will mean she takes him away from her side. Her relationship with her twin is the most important thing to her and she's afraid of losing that connection. Yeah, Percy's gun is known as The List due to those names on his gun. He legitimately has a list of people he has to kill, and that list is on the instrument he intends to kill them with. Percy...has...issues. Finally the moment all of us familiar with the campaign wait for whenever we watch someone react to this show. The Sun Tree and the bodies hanging from it. This is the turning point of the original game. This is the moment Matt Mercer slapped the entire party with the realization of just how *dark* he is willing to take the story. Actions have consequences, there are bad people in the world and they will do absolutely terrible things and Matt is willing to explore just how terrible they are given the opportunity. Vox Machina crossed a powerful Vampire Lord and a master Necromancer sorceress who slaughtered a royal family to take their lands. They do not fuck around, innocents are going to get caught up in the crossfire, and the party will have to face it. Even years later the players cite this reveal as being the moment they realized just how hard Matt is willing to go. He will not sugar coat evil beings' evil actions. If anything it's even worse in the game. They hung up a bear as well to represent Trinket too.
When we all realized In season 3 we all came back and watched this episode to see who.
The reaction to Keyleth interacting with the "poor little pupper" funny. Also the strangest things they killed is actually a collection of things those individual characters actually killed in the campaign. Granted... now that I think of it one of those (Vax's) is technically out of sequence now.
Although her methodology and execution is misplaced, Vex is trying to look out for her brother and protect him from having his heart broken from possible rejection. Keyleth is...essentially a princess of her people. And thus would likely not have the room or the time for a relationship. And the begrudging rejection is what Vex means by "those vines have thorns".
As good as this was, nothing beat being there for the stream as they slowly figured it out as Matt described each corpse. If you go look up the clip, something to note: he keeps tilting his head as if a hanging corpse himself as he describes them.
This episode is a good point to drop how I can remember which is Vax and which is Vex. Vex is the vexing one, i.e. the sister. :P
Being able to do things that's required on the fly means you're good in a pinch. having your shit togeher means you can pull off crap like that RELIABLY and PREDICTABLY.
Percy: she gor what she wanted Again. so true Azula always gets what she wants.
When you said about an oposite god to the everlight, there are actually a ton of different gods and godesses in d&d almost everything has one ore more relating to it, for example qith death there are neutral good and evil all seeing it in different ways, the good and neutral are more in reference to the positive and the nature of life as a cicle both being against undead as being something unnatural and that breaks the cicle, while the evil gods embrace it.
So an interesting detail: Silas isn't the one that decided to hang the warning at the tree. Delilah was.
I love Matt Mercer but honestly... the part with the people hanging from the tree at the end was one of his more mess up moments
Ant: ain't no way That's Scanlan for you.
19:04 not her worst kill, that would be snapping that little boys neck by accident.
While vax and Gilmore do flirt and have a romantic history. Vax is a little more interested in keykey rn
Grog missing his big sister T-T
What are you talking about in regards to Gilmore? It was pretty obvious that he was not jealous and not offended by what he saw!
In the OG campaign, the darkest story Kiki had for the campfire thing was how she split a child in half. Clearly not really fit for television, so they went with this. As for why a child, they were fighting the Dread Emperor who is a guy that chains 4 small children to him at all times so that whenever a good character attacks him and deals damage to him, he heals by draining the life force of the children tied to him. The healing he gets is much larger than the health pool of the children however, so the party has to decide on whether they kill the children or not, knowing regardless the children will die, but the fight will be easier.
Funny you should mention Stranger Things, cause the Whispered One is one of Vecna's titles (They can't call him Vecna here due to WotC owning the copyright, same reason Scanlan casting Bigby's Hand is renamed to Scanlan's Hand)
After watching your reaction to the Avatar season 2 finale and how much you loved Azula...not sure if you already knew but her voice actress Grey Delisle plays Delilah too
Woooooooooooooooow the title of this episode...
It's funny watching people in the comments trying to explain Vex lmao, while she does have some complex stuff going on it still really doesn't make her in the right to act the way she does in the animated show... Having issues doesn't mean you get to meddle with other people and it's perfectly normal to think that's not a good way of handling that. Especially in a familial relationship. I wish people understood sometimes that while this is a character they know well, these people are just reacting for the first time, and she's clearly intentionally portrayed in a jealous way in this show. People are gonna think about why she's being this way at all without context. Probably could have helped to have a flashback or some kind of other imagery to solidify that conflicting nature of the relationship a little better for the newer watchers. That's just a little nitpick from a writer's perspective though. I know how hard it is to sometimes slip up on conveying something properly because I know a character already and accidentally assume my reader does as well. I love the show though, and it was a great reaction!
