Offroad Recovery Gear - X-Lock line shortening

This is video segment 3 of 3 where we tested winch line shortening methods. Previously we have used the Factor 55 LDP, a standard 3/4 inch screw pin bow shackle. Today we show the anchor line which was shortened with the Safe Xtract X-Lock.
I know this series wasn't very popular, and video #2 resulted in a net loss of subscribers so I apologize for that. But I thought it would be fun to show in multiple segments, different techniques in recovery gear.
Thanks for sticking around through all three!

Polyurethane rope has a lower melting point than polyester or nylon rope. I'm sure that rope has a specific use for what you're doing since it's in the video. It's hard to tell, but did the polyurethane melt within the rope itself? Seems quite stiff after the pull and even though pliable, it's acting much different then usual. In my job, rigging with the use of a capstan, polyurethane is never to be used because of the melting point and how slick it is naturally. While using it in a capstan, it melts along the inside, on the drum. I would definitely recommend trying out more tests with a nylon or polyester double braid or kernmantle, maybe even an aramid fiber rope.

So we when from dynamic line load testing, to static line load testing...kinda apples and oranges for force dynamics and shock load... If your worried about radial bend in ropes the better solution is Kevlar mule tape over braided dynamic-rope...change the rope not the rigging tools!! If this is just 12v winch and winching accessories...just reduce the amount of line you spool on in the first place and carry extensions (also now weather and UV protected) for the long runs because the rigging and re rigging time for you guys by my witness will be absolutely the same, yet you are now all a bit safer for repeatability for continued in theater operations. BTW make sure your x-lock is machined from a billet or make sure the casting is sonically tested, used well below WLL and/or has a break strength certification for each casting date /manufacturing date. This is just like in the climbing industry going from the old figure eight devices versus new ATC belays and so on...

i dont understand why the XL doesn't tend to slide on the single line side, pulled towards the loop (2 line out of three), since it is so slippery. I need some physics.

Justin, I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos on shortening your winch extension rope. I have a Factor 55 LDP I will be using it with shackles to distribute loads, but not looping rope through it, after watching your video. I also saw the XFactor video and I’m not totally convinced that’s what I want to do. So, first question. Is there another safe way to shorten winch extension lines? I’d like to get your thoughts on this method. I need to rescue a vehicle 120’ away. I have a 10k# winch with 70’ of usable rope and a one piece 200’ winch rope extension. I run out my winch line to 70’. I shackle one end of my extension rope to the vehicle being rescued. Run it thru a Factor 55 snatch block and soft shackle it to my winch hook. Run the tag end to the vehicle being rescued, run the line through a second Factor 55 snatch block and soft shackle to the vehicle being rescued. So now, I’ve taken care of half of the line. Now run the line back to the winch hook. At this point I have three options to attach the new line to the winch hook. 1 If I have a third snatch block, run the line through it and soft shackle to the first snatch block. Run the tag end to the vehicle being rescued and shackle it. I believe, this is the safest way, IF you have three snatch blocks. My question deals with the next two. 2. Run the second line from the vehicle to be rescued over the first line on the snatch block attached to the winch hook. Now you have two lines, one on top of the other. Theoretically they should not move, I believe in the real world there will be some movement on those two lines and it will be in opposite directions and with, say a 6k# load on the winch, there could be enough heat generated to fail the ropes. 3. Instead of running one line on top of the other, loop the second line through the hub of the snatch block attached to the winch hook. Put a dog bone through the loop on the other side of the snatch block. Maybe you make two loops around the dog bone so it doesn’t fall out if the line goes slack. Your thoughts?? Thank you very much...Victor
