Offroad Recovery Gear - Shorten a winch line with 3/4 Shackle??

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Segment 2 of the shortening a winch line series brings us to using a 3/4 inch screw pin bow shackle to try and shorten winch line. A couple of methods were used where we just looped the rope over the shackle, and then used a 2 inch dowel to also shorten rope through the shackle.
This video will show you the strengths and weaknesses of this method, and I'll talk about whether or not I like the idea overall.
The final series is coming up in a week where we take apart the anchor rope that was tied off with an X-lock, so we'll see how that faired too soon!

Nice to see Eric out and about, its been a while, a big thank you to him for his efforts as well!! the key with the screw shackle is the stretch on the thread area over time/ under applied force ... there were several good points brought to light in the discussion... but the thread surface and underlining metallurgy are the consequence to the continued safe use of that shackle, not the function of does it open and close, which is really a convenience feature after an unmeasured / un-estimated strength test! Thankfully the trial and error, then generally accept margin of safety on metal shackles was made long before now... they say make something idiot proof and a better idiot shall appear...rigging shackles are one of very few exceptions to that rule in my book, very undervalued tool ...now to get people to quit displaying them like jewelry on there bumpers and rendering them as good as useless when the treads foul up and so forth...(rant averted here) What a day huh!

If you're worried about the winch rope squeezing the jaw opening, and stressing the pin threads too much, you can slip an 1-1/4" long piece of 1" water pipe over the pin. It will act as a spacer in the jaw opening and take the inward side load on the shackle off the threads on the pin.

Reminds me of when I pulled out my friend’s Subaru with an entire roll of twine/kite string lol. Made who knows how many loops....maybe 150? Then wrapped in duct tape.

Did someone at least enjoy the string for kite flying before it was entombed in duct tape?! Shame if not...don’t ever take the value of kite flying for granted! Personally, duct tape has been rolled length wise and consequently braided for emergency cordage needs more than once in my poor-mans youth to recover other peoples property...i hope to never repurpose it like that ever again...good thing it was actually premium gaffers tape that one time...#sketchyAF!!!

Justin, we talked a few months back because I was considering getting a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. I finally did do and ordered it at the end of November. The Jeep finally came in this past week and I will be taking delivery of it this week. I’m the guy that lives in Sterling and now that I will have my Rubicon, I would love to help out on any vehicle recoveries that there is and additional help is needed to recover the vehicle. Just let me know!

congrats!! we have a few people out that way that make the trip to the hills for the big operations. plus we usually run a blizzard call out that way for stranded motorists at least once per year. www.co4x4rnr.com/contact and click the membership button, they will get back to you as soon as possible.

Bill Burke would use a rolled up magazine or a Benchmade knife to shorten a winch line. You’re clearly over-engineering this. I’m kidding. I like what I’m seeing with that shackle. You de-rate a shackle WLL to 50% when side loading it at 90 degrees. So the forces don’t need to balance out to zero, they just need to balance enough to within half of that 4-3/4 ton shackle rating. I’d be tempted to grab an alloy shackle or a bigger one if I had one, but I’d run that and feel good about the fact that WLL design factor is 6 to 1.

i think you're asking if i've done towing MPG? i'm seeing approximately 10 MPG with the 7000 pound cargo trailer that belongs to the scout troop. which is right on par with what i was seeing in my f150.

What’s the purpose of shortening the winch line that way? Why not leave some on the winch spool? Are you demonstrating for when you need maximum power? Why not use a snatch block?

some times you need to get all the rope off the winch drum to be on the "last wrap" which is where all the pulling power is. we run into multiple scenarios where even with a pulley (which pays out x2 of the rope), you still need more off the drum so you still have to shorten it. I don't recommend using a shackle to do it, it wasn't designed for it. there are devices specifically engineered for that purpose.

Sorry but I would NEVER use a shackle in that way. The ropes should be positioned on the sharp curve of the shackle and the screw-in pin. When you put ropes on those legs of the shackle - you are putting the stress on the weakest part of that shackle and counting on the threads holding up. Especially on an older shackle where the threads may have become somewhat worn, you are trusting those threads with a lot of force. Work with strongest part of your tools not the weakest part or in this case link.
