Off to "CARS & CAFFEINE AT COMBERMERE" April 2023 | Plus garage talk, old tin building & aircraft

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the monthly "Cars & Caffeine at Combermere" classic car & sportscar meet looming into sight, we began to make plans. After a few jobs in the garage, the 1947 Dodge pickup and 1995 MX5 Mk1 were readied for the trip, and as regulars might expect a few odd items of memorabilia creep in to the video too, as does a thwarted attempt to undertake a simple task on the 4CV.
The morning meet-up at the Old Piggery Cafe at Combermere, close to the Cheshire/Shropshire border, was very well attended and most of the cars that attended made it into this upload. As we were nearby, my youthful assistant and I walk up the road to take a look at a 100 year-old corrugated iron shed which has an interesting link to both the 1920s Manchester-built Crossley motor-car, and also pioneer aviators in the early 20th Century.
After lunch, and with the Dodge tucked away safely back at base, we then head off to the former RAF Sleap airfield, home of the Shropshire Aero Club, to take a look to see what, if anything, was going on. We were in luck. Not only was a (just) post-war North American Trojan trainer in action, along with other interesting propeller-driven machines, a very swish GT was also spotted.
Returning home via the small town of Wem, we took a slight diversion to visit an old garage and stand in awe of the sloping 1950s canopy still positioned over the petrol pumps - exciting times! A few old cars were spotted in a nearby car park, and with them also recorded for posterity, we head for home after an enjoyable day's outings.
The meeting at Combermere is held monthly during the brighter months of the year, future dates are on the Cars and Coffee at Combermere Facebook group.
If you're a regular to the Old Classic Car channel, thanks for your continued support. If you're new here then - Hello! - please take a look around and consider subscribing if videos about old cars in general, tinkering, show visits, driving classic cars just for the sake of it etc etc are your interest too. I've been messing around with creaky old cars since the 1980s so I don't see me changing my habits any time soon.

Thanks for the interesting insight into Crossley and the shed. Shame such heritage is largely forgotten and ignored.

I remember years ago we had a Renault 4 van in for new valves, and had to go cap in hand to another garage to beg the use of the special Renault socket for getting to the head bolts. It was like a shallow socket on a long shaft, the socket had flats machined on the outside to clear the pushrods. If you try to use a conventional socket you ran the risk of damaging the pushrods.

Good point regarding the torque wrench! For 35 years I did not think of that and now I need to replace or at least check the accuracy.I suspect it has been compromised.CHEERS from Canadian Wetcoast!!!

The three so called "Fiat" 124 Spiders were Abarth 124 Spiders... quite a lot of difference and yes while partly built in the Mazda MX5 ND production line on Hiroshima , two these examples were the earlier ones shipped from Turin, Italy after final fishing and build etc.

Well Rick, what a brilliant mornings viewing from the OCC Stable ! Your video was so interesting - so many cars to choose from ! The piece about the Crossley building was fascinating - I totally agree, it needs to be preserved. Too many historic buildings just torn down without any real thought about their heritage. That Garage needs to be preserved too - once they are gone, they are gone ! The Airfield was fun too - there's something about seeing aircraft take off, always makes me smile - such a miracle. Thank you for a great mornings entertainment - have a lovely Easter too. Take care 🙂

Another interesting vid, I’d go for the DB5 especially in that gorgeous Blue. Top marks to the owner for bringing it out to show and not storing it away like most owners would with such a valuable beauty. Back in the real world the Escort XR3i cabriolet floated my boat and that Rover 90 was a Gem, Thanks for posting, Great stuff…

What a great video Rick. Definitely the DB5 over the E Type. My favourite in show (apart from Little Dodge of course) has to be that beautiful Riley. How very interesting was your diversion to the Crossly hanger. It should be fairly easy to find the owner. The Combermere Estate would probably know and the make contact to ask permission to see inside. I’d love to see some pics before, as you say, it’s demolished. Thank you for your tip on zeroing the torque wrench. I never even thought of that, mine was still on the last setting I used, I hope it’s not too late 🙄

Love the look of the Rover P4 driving in so stately looking. Seeing the Morgan reminds me when my brother was born 1963 and a district nurse would visit the new born babies. This nurse had grey hair up in a bun and she drove a black Morgan sports car. As a 6 yr old I use to look forward to her visit and she took me for a spin around the block on one occasion. Most district nurses drove Morris Minors. Which one would I take home????? Red and black Vauxhall Is it a Magnum hatchback / estate? Interesting info about the shed. Brilliant.

We have an active Morgan group here in the Chicago area as well as a Morgan agent. Anticipating new 4 wheelers coming in which is great. While controlling interest is currently out of family hands manufacturing continues at the same old stand.

The beautiful Rover 90, dark blue TR6 convertible with those super wire wheels and the pale blue/cream Austin Healey 3000 get my vote. You mused 'if a spanner could talk'; shouldn't that be 'if a spanner could torque'?! Useful tip about easing off the torque wrench; I often wondered about doing that. The instructions that came with the wrench don't mention it, but I'm going to follow your sensible tip anyway.

Even Morgan is now foreign owned by an Italian company . Quiz question name a wholly owned British car manufacturer in 2023 ? Green Porsche 911 as in the opening sequence of the Steve McQueen film "Le Mans" The Riley special you can actually see the road through the gaps around the floor boards and it probably dampens your feet !
