February's classic car show at Crewe Heritage Centre, "Off the Rails" | 27th Feb 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Plenty of classic cars, pickups and motorcycles turned up for the regular "Off the Rails" morning meet held at the Crewe Heritage Centre, Cheshire, on 27th Feb 2022. It was a good excuse to dust down the 1920s Dodge and amble over at a leisurely pace, its first show in several years, the Ford Anglia enjoying a rest on this occasion.
As always there was a real variety of older vehicles on display, favourites for me included the green Triumph TR5, the Austin 7, and a bright red MGC Roadster. I had quite a long chat with the owner of the rare Vanden Plas 3 Litre Princess which until quite recently was little more than a basket-case by all accounts (our chat is included in this video), and also with the owner of the white Hillman Imp parked inside the main building, which is also included here.
Other classic cars in attendance included a fab bright yellow Lotus Elan S4, a variety of Triumphs (Dolomites & 1500s, TRs, Spitfire, GT6, 2000s/2500s), MGBs, Vauxhalls, and quite a mix of American cars and pickups (Chevys, Dodges, Fords etc). The Maestro & Montego contingent was out in numbers too, no Rover SD1s this time though. Pre-war days were represented by our Dodge and the aforementioned Austin 7, it'd be nice to see a few more early cars making the trip over to the Heritage Centre. A number of vintage and classic motorcycles and scooters also turned up.
This is turning into an excellent morning/breakfast classic car meet, keep an eye on the Off the Rails Facebook page for future show dates. Thanks to all the organisers once again, also for arranging the great weather.
I'll include a link to the previous (Jan 22) meet at the end of this one.

    Very nice to see some stunning Vauxhalls. Especially the Sports Hatch in Extra Dark Wine, they were a numbered limited edition. I sold a couple whilst working for Bentley Brothers in Sheffield, a very well respected and long serving family run Vauxhall/Bedford dealer who are sadly no more. Too many big groups these who fail to offer the personal touch of the quality family owned dealerships. Thanks for posting another interesting and entertaining presentation. Nice to see the Dodge looking in fine fettle also.

    RJ, My Dad wanted me to buy a new Ford Elite in college, but I rebelled and bought a one-year-old 1974 BMW 2002. He wasn't delighted with my choice, but still loaned me the money to buy it. I felt pretty smug, and autocrossed it until the sticky Pirelli tires were bald. Then I had to beg him for tire money so the car would pass inspection. He imposed a racing ban after that until I could afford to buy my own rubber. I'm still happy with my choice: Beemer over Ford. Great Vid.

    Nice to see so many Triumphs even the ones that seem to be a work in progress. I like the Imps, it is true that they had their problems but racing wise they gave the Minis some competition . I think if they could've refined them a little more, over heating was their problem, then they would have sold more units. The APT didn't catch on mainly (or in part) because on press runs they ended up with tea and coffee in their laps. The concept was good though. Nice to see a few 'hot rod' pop's I did like the red one with hub caps, very nice as were the others. Those scooters were breeding behind your back I think, nice original looking too. We have see some of those cars before but it is good that the owners show them the light of day regularly. Thanks again for the video most enjoyable. 👍

    Let me take this video and this example (37:27) of wing-mounted side mirrors to ask you this (coming from a U.S. subscriber): even if the angle away from straight ahead was shallower with these as opposed to mirrors mounted at the A-pillar, thus maybe taking your eyes off the road less drastically, with the mirror being that far away and consequently the field of its reflected view so reduced, how the heck did you see anything? Not to mention the need for an assistant to adjust them for you!

  • @oldclassiccarUK

    @oldclassiccarUK

    2 жыл бұрын

    Once they're set up correctly (like with any rear view mirror), I found wing mirrors to be excellent - my Austin A40 had them when I first took to the roads and they really worked well, no need to move your head left or right, just look over in their direction and you got a good view of the road behind. They don't work on every car, but in many cases they can be effective. Thanks for watching

    @@maestromontegometroappreci7287 Another "opinion" probably gained from watching crap such as Top Gear or heard it from mates down the pub or one of these people who kept buying other people unlooked after heaps and then blamed the cars/manufacturers. These cars were actually excellent and very reliable cars and were well liked by their owners as well. We looked after and serviced many of these cars in the garage I worked in back then and they were easy to look after and service etc and we never had any problems with them apart from rust but everything back then had problems with rust - one thing that we noticed with regard to this is how much thicker the metal was on the sills of Maestros and Montegos compared to their rivals - probably why they came out as excellent in the crash tests with only the Volvos coming out above them at the time in their class - they also came out as excellent for reliability as well causing Clarkson commenting on Top Gear that it must have been diesels they tested in his trying to slag them off because them being reliable went against the crap they always came out about BL/Austin Rover etc at that time. My aunt had three Maestros in a row under disability back then because they were the only cars in that class that she could get her fold down wheelchair into the boot apart from the Volvo at that time and they weer excellent reliable cars and she really liked them.
