A FUN car weekend inc trip to "OFF THE RAILS" Crewe Heritage Centre classic cars meet

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Old cars are meant to be fun, aren't they!? Before heading to Crewe Heritage Centre for their February 2023 "Off The Rails" classic car meet, we spent a day outside tinkering with the Renault 4CV and the Mazda MX5 Mk1, both of which were set to go to the Crewe car meet the following day. Harley goes to town tidying his workshop and collection of old trinkets, while I tend to the cars and give him a few useful pointers in the art of vacuuming out his workshop (!) and also our cars. The Renault was even introduced to my prized 1950s tin of polish and Harley's latest ancient tin of oil.
Our trip to the Crewe Heritage Centre in Cheshire went ahead the following day, Mrs OCC in the MX5 and us in the 4CV, the idea being to meet up with dad over there in his MGB GT which, surprisingly, all went perfectly to plan and we were able to park up together close to an ex-British Rail InterCity 125 loco.
The weather was unusually reasonable for the time of year, and a great collection of cars - many classic cars and several later sportscars - turned up. Many conversations were had throughout the morning and much video was recorded. It was particularly interesting to see quite a few cars that were new to me, including a wonderful two-tone Nash (Austin) Metropolitan. My thanks in particular to the gent with the restored Lada estate who talks about his rare survivor in this upload.
Our day of classic car-ing didn't end after our return home, as the next plan was to swap things around and exhume the Ford Anglia E494A from the darker reaches of the garage. Out came the pickup followed by the Anglia, the latter was taken for a drive out which also makes it into the video (someone recently asked for Anglia content and I realised then that I'd not mentioned it in a while). The trusty Ford is now easily accessible so I hope to put a few more miles on it soon.
So, overall, a great couple of days spent with old cars and interesting people. Which is what it's all about and why I've followed this hobby since the 1980s.
Mid-video I also take a quick look at dad's latest acquisition, a magnificent (and huuuuge) ex- travel agent British Airways VC10 model, and talk about a rare tinplate Air France Constellation wind-up toy that he owned as a child, lost touch with for decades, and recently re-discovered and bought back.
Keep an eye on the Heritage Centre's website and FB pages for news of future "Off The Rails" car shows; as the weather improves, days get longer and cars are put back on the road after a winter's rest, I fully expect meets in the months to come to be even better attended. For February I was truly amazed at the turnout.
There are loads of show walkarounds on the channel now (including previous Crewe meets) so please take a look if you're new to the Old Classic Car channel:

Because red paint absorbs blue light and others which are shorter in wavelength, the more energy it absorbs compared to other colours means the red pigment in the paint is eroded faster.

The dream of every classic car owner resembles the opening title sequence of "The Italian Job". For most of us, the difficulties and expense closely resemble the moment of hitting the bull dozer.

A great way to spend a Sunday morning. Some of the display cars were so sweet, I couldn't decide which was my favourite. My dad had a 100E Anglia in the early 60s. The colour scheme was two tone blue and I do like the two tone on that model (but not on all cars). He wrote it off in an accident one night whilst picking my brother up from the pictures, as he had missed the last bus. I flew in an RAF VC10 from Northern Ireland in 1977. I was coming to Blighty for R&R leave, mid-tour. I must say that it was the most comfortable flight that I have been on, and so smooth. At the time the aircraft was older than the civvy flights that I had been on. It was a million times better than the flight out from Germany in the back of a Lockheed C130, you may know that as a Hercules, a cargo and certainly not a passenger plane.

Nice to see Derek Lancasters Metropolitan HEJ 926, i have 4 Metropolitans. This is an Austin NOT a Nash, Austins were RHD Nash were LHDs, although the same car, these later ones were simply known as Metropolitan 1500s. I know this series 3 car, its beautiful, although the owner is aware that Black was not added to the colour chart for Mets until 1959 when the series 4 was introduced until end of production in 1961, series 4 cars has a rear opening external boot lid and quarter light side vent windows, this colour was known as Classic Black (P908) and Frost White (P914). well done Derek for displaying, nice to see some classic 50s cars amongst a sea of modern non classics at a show.

All models at a time when a young boy could stand at a traffic light-controlled crossroads for some good old fashioned 'car spotting.'. Front. back and sides of vehicles were all recognizable unlike the soulless shapes of to-day!!

Thirteen years from a battery is unheard of where I live in California. It's so hot here, we're lucky to get three or four years. But, the cars don't rust much, so there's that.

I was given a tip by a friend re. a very cheap car dust cover. Get a Queen sized doona cover from a secondhand shop. Slit around the seams to double the size and this is enough to cover 2/3rds. of most cars. Then a single doona opened up is enough to cover the bonnet. Saves the car from all dust and is easy to throw over and take off. I do this with all my old cars.

When you were talking about screen washer it bought back memories of when seconhand car adds used include in the description "electric washers" wow big deal in the day, some had foot operated washers as well, not to mention floor mounted dipper switch. Them was the days, lol. The saab 99 from memory used a lot of Triumph parts, engine, gearbox etc so maybe fitting a Dolomite sprint engine would have been fairly straight forward other than space wise. MG BGT is a fairly basic car with a well proven engine that is simple to service and as you said a good beginners car. I have very much enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing.

One of your best videos - such variety! Your gorgeous 4CV remains my favourite with the Riley Monaco at the meet a close second. Amusing to see the Youthful Assistant vacuuming his shed and the Mazda. I wonder if Mrs OCC expects him to vacuum his bedroom?! I thoroughly concur with your advice on cleaning out wheel arch lips, something I do a couple of times a year even on my modern cars, and your sound advice to re-torque cylinder heads. My car-owning children believe these tasks, along with simple checks of levels, are only for 'old codgers' and they mock me mercilessly! 🙂

Seeing the Redex advert reminded me when we used to travel to Dorset from London my dad would fill up the car and for each gallon of petrol he would insist on a shot of Redex, I wonder if it really was needed or just a clever marketing ploy ? I also remember him swearing by Duckhams oil, so I followed in his footsteps and put in my Vauxhall Fierenza BIG MISTAKE it knocked like crazy so I stuck with my good old Castrol GTX

I’ve always said I don’t buy my cars to just sit in that garage 😃 The seasons are a bit of a challenge at bringing them out but I agree, have to find that balance so things don’t get a bit hairy 😅 One of mine is actually the daily and I constantly get fussed at by my fellow car enthusiasts 😂 but oh well 🤷‍♂️ if I don’t drive it when I’m gone somebody will 😆 cheers and keep up the great videos 🇺🇸🇬🇧❤️🤍💙

Why red paint fades more than other colours is the pigmentations in the paint.I was a painter in auto body shops back in the day. Red also cost more than other colours. I’m sure with today’s paints red stands up to the elements a lot better.

At the meet they were no-frills sandwiches but still very agreeable. At home, things do get more varied and toasting has been known to play a part in the overall construction of bacon-based sandwiches.

The earlier 1709cc SAAB engine did owe its origins (loosely) to the Triumph engine of the time, but it was majorly re-engineered I understand especially once the later B-Series SAAB engines in the 99s, 99 Turbos and the 900s went on sale.
