Off-road Hand Winch - DIY Service & Maintenance

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A video showing you how to service and maintain a 4x4 off-road Hand Winch (a.k.a Wire Rope Pulling Hoist).
A Hand Winch is an invaluable tool when it comes to off road recovery. The Hand Winch has a number of benefits over an Electric Winch including; ability to winch sideways, backwards, no loss of power, less likely to fail, no need for a bullbat and no huge weight penalty over the front of your vehicle. However, it can be very hard and exhausting work... It is important to regularly service and maintain your winch so it will give you many years of trouble free use.

knock the shear pin out measure it and get the same size grade 8 bolt and nut take that with you in the release mechanism for the cable silicone it in there or and extra long one and bolt it through your cable release then reduce your load on your winch handle by adding another pully block these type or winches dont shear pins unless they handle is well overloaded

Shear Pins: look at the handle of your winch and there are rubber plugs on the ends of the tube. Two spare shear pins should be in there.

The shear pins are only in the Griphoist/Tirfor. This is a copy of that product. Also, you arent allowed to service a Griphoist without being certified. I know because I work for Tractel who manufactures them

Hi Lisa. My hand winch came from IronMan and it does have shear pins. I am sure it is a clone of the Tirfor but the quality appears decent. Also, can you share what sorts of training you are referring to? Your own Griphoist manual has clear instructions for the owner to provide service such as cleaning, lubrication and replacing shear pins: No Training Specified. See Tirfor document 113565-61-ind-05-11-15.pdf

@@teotwaki hello. Service, as in, changing the jaws, washers, springs, etc. Cleaning and maintaining is part of owning these hoists. Cleaning, you do not need to be service trained. Only 9f you are removing parts and replacing them. Hope that helps.

@@teotwaki The Ironman/ARB/don't know what, is not a copy of a TirFor ("Pull Hard" ) or Griphoist/Greifzug made by Tractel. However the principle is the same. As far as i know the so-called "certification" refers to TirFors used for lifting people. Of course you can service the device yourself. Indeed the spare shear pins are in the Tirfor handle > haven't found them in the ARB/Ironman/other Chinese clones. Can assure you that the Tirfor/Greifzug is a completely different piece of cake. It's a professional piece of equipment, rated, tested, etc. Have used the same 1600 Tirfor for 19 years continuously, broke the pin once, maintenance: cleaning and a (very) little bit of grease. Make sure that you use the correct cable as this type of cable is designed for this type of winch.

The actual brand/make is Pacific Hoist, this unit was sold under the brand 'T-Max', however, the same Pacific Hoist unit is sold by ARB as their Magnum Hand Winch. I believe ARB also distributes in US, so hopefully they can source it for you...

It's a T-Max brand, but manufactured by Pacific Hoists (who also do the ARB Magnum unit).
