Off Airport with 3 Carbon Cubs Day 2

Ойын-сауық

This is day 2 with Bruce Graham and Bill Holmes flying around Northern Nevada in the #CubCrafters #CarbonCub #Pilottraining. We are #FlyingCowboys and this is #Aviation. Bill has an SS and Bruce flies an FX3. Mine is a hermaphrodite of an FX2. All 3 are very capable aircraft.
Today we go into the high country landing above 9000 feet all morning.
Density altitude is up over 10,000 plus feet and power and energy management is critical on days like this. Carrying a bit of speed on touchdowns is also critical as the air is just not supportive of your wing unless you do such. Flying up high is a whole different skill set that many pilots are just not comfortable with. Winds are different up high, your horse power is generally cut in half and you alway hear me preach about power and energy management. It is absolutely critical.
A pilot cannot train enough to prepare for days like this. It can get very real quickly!
Train yourself in slow flight, spot landings, know your stall characteristics of your aircraft given the various configurations and practice practice practice.
I continue to hear about how someone might want to go out and try the various things you may see on the internet. I respect that but honestly, I grew up watching the Dukes of hazard. I still have not tried to out run the law or jump over a train because it was on tv. Same goes for the old and bold comments you often hear. Pilots are responsible for their own safety and their passengers as well. Training is essential for a good experience. Thats what we all want. If you don't train and prepare, odds are your experience will not be the one your're looking for. My dad always said "son you cant fix stupid". Thats very real. Use your head and have some common sense. Get training and continue to make your self better. The wind is not always going to be a head wind on landing. Learn to land in all different wind directions. All of this will only help you become better for your own safety and your passengers.
I encourage anyone to come and fly here with us. I promise you will learn something. I know I do almost every day.
I post these videos for one purpose. The promotion of aviation. Hopefully it inspires you and others in the hopes that you too will go flying or take someone with you. Get fired up and make it happen. Aviation has limitless opportunities and its up to all of us to make it safe and continue the quest of being the best we can be and good stewards of the land we fly.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy this Day 2 of Flying with 3 Carbon Cubs.
You're not going to want to miss the next video coming, "My road to flying and owning a Stearman. If you like these videos please share it. Leave me a comment. Come fly with me. Make sure you watch Day 1 of this mini series as we fly around the lower lands on Northern Nevada.
I appreciate your time here and following along.
Cheers and again, thank you for watching!
Now go flying if you can!
Kevin

Hey, Everyone! I was pretty intrigued by the crosses after we landed there, and wanted to know the story. I ended up calling the editor to the local paper, and he told that he wrote a story about them around 10 years ago. It was a guy that put one up for his brother, and then added more as other siblings passed away. His girlfriend also added one for one of her siblings.

Just awesome my friend. We are going to have to wait on my knee for our hook up, torn meniscus again. Needed this video right now, the fire is close, needed a break from all the stress. Love the footage over Tahoe, that 360 camera is a game changer for sure. Will stay in touch.

Kevin I loved the shadow work - when you took off it was the shadows that told you three not two of you were flying and your shadow passing across the top if the yellow. Now back to the Stearman - more of all that Please. You all are so funny and it is so enjoyable to be able to "feel", via video, what you all have and do. thanks as always! - R

dude..you guy are indeed inspire me to take flying again! I only have 24 hrs flight time in a taylorcraft but I hope to be in position to take flying lesson when I move to FL. My ultimate goal is to get sea rating sport certificate (as I am hard of hearing) and go from there. Right now I'm living in Oregon and I'm trying to get a job transfer for next year. If I can do that I can save $20,000 a year. So looking forward to this. I want to make videos like you and call it "The flying surfer's".

You mean 9100 ASL, right, not 9100' above the lake?! I like the down hill landing at 5:49, those really show the importance of keeping the speed low as possible on final.

portnuefflyer Lake Tahoe is 6223’ when full, it’s 6220 right now I think waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=10337000 and the tallest peak above my house at Tahoe’s North Shore, Nevada side is Mt Rose, the peak is 10,785’. There’s about 4000’ of mountains around here, above lake level.
