N3N Biplane Training Part 2

Ойын-сауық

My Biplane Journey continues here with part 2.
Hopefully you watched part one as this is the follow up to my first day. We start this video with where we left off in the last and then move through some dialog and countess landings. We start landing in a big field west of the airport doing laps in each direction similar to a crop duster pattern. One after another. IN the field we were knocking out landings about every minute with a crosswind changing sides for ideal practice. We then move to the paved runway where the wind is a tad stronger and the landings become a bit more "sporty".
#Biplane #BiplaneTraining #N3NTraining #StearmanTraining #Stearman # Pilottraining
As a recap from video one, this is where it all starts for me, here in Lincoln CA., with Andy Bibber.
He owns a flight school and offers all sorts of instruction from basic private pilot courses to advanced specialty aircraft type training.
This is where i'm starting my journey to fly a biplane.
At this point I have never even been in a biplane let alone fly one. My knowledge here in the beginning is zero. It's at a preschool level. I have zero experience with radial engines and quite honestly I am extremely timid on all of the above.
You will see me gaining knowledge by the second. The quest for knowledge and an educated opinion on what it is I'm looking for exactly is unknown at this point. All I know is that I think I want a Stearman but not having been in any of these old warbird trainers, I begin my quest for an educated understanding on what it is I'm looking for.
I have had a balsa wood Stearman model hanging above my head since childhood from my grandfather. That same model now hangs above my sons head in his room today.
Now at almost 51 years old, I'm finally in a position in my life to potentially own one of the historic aircraft but first, I must immerse myself in training and education. Here we go. Make sure to follow along here as we begin a mini series with "My Biplane Journey". We start here with the Navy version of the Stearman. The N3N. Its a much larger and heavier aircraft I come to learn and its a beast to fly! It's a joy like no other. I have a lot of respect for the pilots that flew these aircraft and those that are currently flying these aircraft today.
In my next video you (not this one) you will see the progression as I then transition to a Stearman. I have a lot more coming for you.

This is awesome! My dad learned to fly in an N3N at Wichita KS in 1942. He went on to fly PBY5A's out of Panama during the war.

You brought me back to being a kid with my dad and flying our stearman some of my most precious memories are in that plane out in the hanger I take as many people up as time will allow to experience true aviation the smells the noises the openness to me it’s pure love the purest form of freedom my wife has learned when she hears the bi go roaring past the house cause our grass strip passes right by the house that I was needing some decompression

Years ago when I was the organizer of a fly-in and pancake breakfast, I had a guy with a 1929 Travel Air come give rides. When he got to town, he looked me up and asked me if I wanted to go along with him as he wanted to go up and fly over the town for a while to let people know he was here. What a blast. The weather was perfect and zero turbulence, so since the flight was too short for me, I headed for my hanger and went flying. Low wing 4 seater. Turbulence was horrible. It was so bad I decided to forgo the flight and land. The biplane didn’t even know the turbulence was there. 3 days later two guys with WACO’s spent the night here and I got to go up in a 3 biplane formation flight the next morning. Could have been freezing cold outside (it wasn’t) and I don’t think I would have noticed. Already watched Trent’s video. Congrats on your new biplane. Do you see yourself landing it on that 9k elevation peak above Lake Tahoe?

This is the coolest stuff ever! More more more of this! Used to take care of one of these in Houston for a local doctor. He always pushed me to get signed off in it... but it was a museum piece. Never had the guts to solo it. Congrats on the new wings! She’s a beauty!!

Interesting to hear you speak of the characteristics of the way the plane handles...the touch she takes and where you have to be heavier on the controls. Beautiful footage as well. Glad you did this when you did. Visibility down in the valley is lousy now, as it us up here...smoke.

Awesome video series Kevin! Love the music. Really sets the mood but a little loud at times. In anycase, I too LOVE Stearmans. One of the first flying model airplanes I built was a Stearman PT-17 kit. I have at least 4 R/C kits of various sizes now. Someday I'll be owning a full scale too! Really inspired to get that goal back on track by this journey you're on.

Great video, Kevin. I’ve never flown an N3N and really enjoyed flying it vicariously through your videos. It would be fun to do a comparison video between it and the Stearman once you get it nailed down. Of course, a bit of a difference between the 450hp N3N and your 275hp Stearman.

Really glad you shared this process Kevin. Saw your Stearman over on Trent's channel...absolutely beautiful bird...man you found one in awesome condition. Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing you fly it more. I'm sure there are some back country spots big enough and smooth enough for you to put it in...is that something you might do or is the round engine a deterrent for stuff like that? My brother flew T-28's in the Marine corps in the training command as an instructor for a while and that is the only plane type he has dead-sticked more than once. He loves the sound of the radials, but hates the reliability. Then again T-28's in the Navy/Marines in the early 70's were used and abused...not maintained as well as your plane will be for sure. Love your videos man! Stay safe and happy flying! Side note: I owned an RC Stearman for years and it was exactly like you described the N3N here on landing...not to bad on grass, but you better be on your game on pavement...especially in a cross wind.
