Odd Reported Incidents Of "Bear-People" Stealing Children

In the last 200 years there have been plenty of reports describing bears taking children. A few of these incidents end with the child returning home and telling an incredible story. These reports seem to reveal a pattern of rather bizarre "bear" behavior. Do we not fully understand what bears are capable of? or did something anomalous happen to the individuals in these reports?

When I lived in Alaska just outside Denali national park I witnessed a brown bear walking down a road with a muzzle full of porcupine needles. He left the road and went into a dry creek bed and picked up two round medium sized rocks maybe 5lb rocks. He then started using the rocks to pull the needles out of his face. It was absolutely incredible to see. He was using tools!!

Struck me as sad and unfair. Real stories are not like on tv, goodness is not always returned in kind. Ben Killum rehabs bear cubs whose mothers are gone. His bears like people, too much, he has to try and make his cubs "shy" of people. In his book one of his bears grew up and didnt fear people so it kept going to a building site in a rural area 5 miles from where I live. One of the workers decided to shoot the bear because it kept coming to the site.

Zoologists reference a strange behavior in predatory mammals specifically- where hunting behavior is disarmed by the mere presence of the young of another species. You’ll sometimes see lions caring for leopard young, and even bears or wolves caring for fawn. They theorize there is something about infant mammals that signals other mammals “I’m a baby- I’m not a threat-“ similar to how humans think things with big eyes and small heads are “cute”

I lived way up in The High Sierras in a cabin for a good while in my mid twenties. There was a black bear that loitered the neighborhood, because others in the small community of cabins were weird enough to leave food for him in the summer months. Nobody at all other than me hung around for the winters where there were snow storms the likes of which only 7,000’ elevation can bring. He used to come on the deck at night and try and jimmy my shed door open to get to the trash that I stored there until there was enough for a dump run. I ran him off a dozen times. And most of those times he’d lurk, pissed off up the hill and stare at me. I’d shine my light at him and salute him with a “better luck next time, asshole” and his two big eyes shone green right back at me. It was almost like we starred in some strange sitcom, and after a while I got the feeling he knew he pissed me off and sometimes came back on the deck just to ruin my sleep. He’d “bump” the door and I’d rack the Remington and throw my boots on. Just two bored weirdos in the woods, I guess. Those bears, and even animals in general, are capable of a whole lot more rational thought than we give them credit for. The occasional 5150 bear lunatic with a club doesn’t seem impossible to me, Just weird. The mother bears nurturing children makes all the sense in The World.

There is a fairly recent story of a little boy who got lost in the woods and survived the cold night because a stag came and bedded down with the boy. Sceptics located the site where the boy claimed he spent the night and discovered what appeared to be a large impression in a bed of leaves. There are heaps of stories of mammals rescuing species other than their own as well as friendships forming between species. Also bears can ambulate upright on 2 legs. Such a bear became a mascot in a Florida community. It was assumed the bear had suffered a spinal injury causing him to prefer walking upright. Cellphones are enabling us to document animal behavior that no one thought possible.

I truly actually believe that this poor bear just needed someone to care for. Sometimes reality is stranger than fiction.

I'm glad you found the recent 2019 case. I recall seeing the interview with the Sheriff(?) who was completely skeptical but smiling while recounting the boys claim. To me it seems plausible that a mother bear who lost her own cubs would be prone to adopt a surrogate cub of another species. That maternal drive can be very strong. We have seen examples today where zoos and animal rescues have used the oddest of combinations of surrogate mothers for orphaned animals. One even a used a pig to be a surrogate mother for a Bengal Tiger cub that adapted to her odd pink family along with piglet littermates like everything was normal. Now the tiger has her own litters of adopted bengal piglets on occasion and never once had a sausage snack.

This is interesting. I remember a story my Uncle told me when I was a kid about a bear and a little girl. This happened back in the early 1960's, not sure who the little girl was though. A family had gone into the mountains to pick huckleberries and with them was a little girl about 4 years old. Well, everyone had their heads down picking berries when someone finally looked up to see where the child was and found she was gone. They all started looking for her and soon found her playing with two little bear cubs near the tree line. A rather large sow bear was eating huckleberries near by. At first they were not sure what to do, they didn't want to startle the sow as she might attack the little girl or one of the adults to protect her cubs. He told me it was so strange to see that little girl playing with the bear cubs as the sow walked around them eating berries with not a care in the world. She was totally accepting of the little girl playing with her cubs. He said, " she won't hurt the little girl because mothers know babies" and she wold protect the girl too if she had to. They were able to get the little girl back quickly and they all just went home and left the bear alone. But he was right about "mothers know babies" as this kind of thing is seen all over the world. I saw a Bald Eagle who brought a hawk chick back to her nest to feed to her own babies but ended up raising it! The lioness who took the fawn back, instead of eating it she protected it and mothered it. Mother animals take in orphans of other species all the time so I think a bear taking a child is really not that surprising. Just look around YT, there are tons of videos of mother animals raising baby things that don't match!!

The first time I remember going blueberry picking with my grandma, she took my sibling and I out and took us to this huge hill, and the blueberries were gorgeous. We went to go pick the ones in front of us and she stopped us and told us we had to climb to the top of the hill. We asked why and she just said that's the way it's done. You start at the top and work downwards. That made sense to us in terms of carrying the baskets. We got to the top and that's when she told us that while it is about the weight of the baskets, the true reason is that there are a ton of bears around who just so happen to like blueberries as much as we do, and if you start at the top, you'll be able to see them lower down the hill from your vantage point, and walk horizontally across the bushes to go down a different way to avoid them altogether. This is especially important because the cubs are harder to see and the sow will viciously attack anyone who comes close to their babies, it's really the only time they'll for sure attack you, particularly in a berry patch where they can't send the cubs up a tree like they usually do. A lone black bear will usually avoid people but you're just stacking the odds against you if you accidentally stumble upon cubs in a berry patch who cry for their mom, who knows she can't get them to safety easily, and is insanely overprotective. Like that's almost guaranteed to fuck up your day. I still find it hilarious that she waited to tell us that until we were already at the top of the hill. But it's a solid lesson that everyone should follow! If you go berry picking, start at the top of a hill and work your way down. If you have small kids, tie them in a sling on your back so you can carry the basket in front of you, and it balances out your weight. It's absolute lunacy to let little ones wander freely in the bush! Btw, my people have been here for thousands of years and women and children who strayed too far from others have been being abducted since time immemorial here, so this phenomenon that's being discussed? Like this is common knowledge and always has been. Just saying. We know why but this society has mocked us for it so we don't really say anything anymore. Just finding it interesting that people are starting to ask these questions.

My mom and her friends were chased by a bear when they were kids. They could hear it but couldn’t see it which was the scariest part. She saw her brother who was 2 minding his own business and not running away when all the kids got scared. She didn’t know if she should run back to pull him to run or save herself but she ran back and picked him up and luckily they were all safe.

These include the systematic reviewing of peers work and then presenting that data (not "riding the coat tails"). This process is necessary to actually progress in a chosen field. The peers you have mentioned helped to create a movement and directional shift of thought (which is an amazing achievement), they do not have a monopoly on data points and case studies. Fascinating stories. I'd be really interested to hear more about the idea that it might've been bigfoot. Gorillas weren't "discovered" until the mid 1800s so it makes sense to me that people from the earlier stories who would have absolutely no concept of a giant hairy ape would call it a bear, or a cross between a bear and a human.

  • @justkittensbeingkittens5892
    @justkittensbeingkittens58922 жыл бұрын

Especially with the first story, I find it definitely believable that a female bear would care for kids. The dude killed bear cubs and grieving mothers are well documented taking in other babies, their species or others. When a mom’s babies die her maternal hormones don’t go back to normal immediately so it very often happens that they will look for a replacement. You see all these cute videos of momma cats raising puppies and vice versa, they will even raise prey animals sometimes so it’s not too hard to believe that a momma bear would take a kid without intentionally hurting them. As for the descriptions, the human memory is notoriously easy to accidentally change. Every time you remember something it becomes essentially rewritten usually without too many changes but it’s very easy to end up with different memories of real events. Witness statements as solid evidence of a crime are being brought into question recently because of this. Also, we know next to nothing about almost everything, especially when biology is involved. I completely agree that “the more you know about something, the less you know about something” we have so many more questions than ancient civilizations because we know more than they did. Our entire concept of physics is probably flawed but we don’t know enough to say that yet. Like da fuq is up with electrons, or light, or even a well known concept like gravity. As we understand it, matter and energy can’t be destroyed, only changed. What happens when you die? The energy isn’t accounted for with your corpse. You get cold after dying, not warm so the energy isn’t used as heat. We haven’t found any extra mass in corpses so that’s probably not it either. There is a difference between life and molecules that have a byproduct of energy so where does that spark of life come from? Sorry if I gave anyone an existential crisis btw lol

This stuff is still happening. The Casey Lynn Hathaway case of 2019. "A missing 3-year-old boy who was found alive after enduring two days of heavy rain and freezing temperatures says it was a bear who kept him safe and warm." Since it's almost impossible that he could have survived in freezing rain for 3 nights on his own...he's probably telling the truth. Female mammals often respond to the crying of children with nature's programming for mothering. Romans probably did find abandoned babies being suckled by wolves, starting the myth of Romulus and Remus. (Children used to be left on hillsides, abandoned, if the mother didn't want them. Barren couples looking to "adopt" checked the hillside at dusk each night.)

Especially because as you went through the old stories in the beginning I was thinking that there were instances of kids being found recently with these stories. I have probably heard of 5 in the last ten years that I can remember. Just from following the missing children on KZread and hearing about them finding them and the stories they tell. I’m not talking about getting my info from just missing 411, I’m saying I thought it was weird hearing it reported from their local news. Sometimes with a small clip from the child or parent. Maybe a real creature going through a traumatic time after losing a small one, just trying to fill a void. We’ve seen the lioness take the baby gazelle for a few hours and treat it well, until she doesn’t.

I wonder how many "kid killed by bear/wolf/cougar" stories were kids who died by domestic violence and parents blaming the animals, knowing the bodies would have been scavenged. Bears who "rescued" kids could be adopting them to replace a recently lost cub - not entirely unheard of in the animal kingdom. In turn I wonder how many of them were intentionally abandoned by their parents and found their way home, but knew they needed a "miracle story" (or their parents convinced them of it to not be arrested).

However, the people who were there, panicked and did everything they could to ward off the huge gorilla that ran towards the child. But whoever sees the video immediately realizes that the gorilla's intention is to get the child out of the water, that is, to help her. Now that I heard these stories about the bears, I was reminded of this case that was very publicized at the time. Unfortunately I don't remember more details but it shouldn't be difficult to find this moment on the internet. Animals can surprise us and I believe we still have a lot to learn about them. Fortunately, the girl was fine. The zoo staff acted very quickly. But I always had that memory of the gorilla helping the little girl.

@@unclecarmine6839 your logic is ridiculous. The burden of proof isn't on me at all. You said "my guess is sasquatch are the friendly bears described here", but there has never been any physical evidence that sasquatch exist. I can't prove that invisible flying monkeys aren't real, but that doesn't mean they are. If you're going to claim or assume that these bears are sasquatch, you should base that on some evidence. There is none It actually baffles me that someone can be so stupid. I really hope you're just trolling me or being sarcastic because if not, my faith in humanity's intelligence has once again hit a new low

The fact that it is more likely to be kidnapped as a child from a bear and have greater chances of surviving than being kidnapped by a human is the true scary thing in all of this

Hmm, seems to be more Sasquatches and/or Dogman like creatures rather than “bears”...
