It's one thing if it is relatively easy terrain. Then yes, kids can clear insane distances. However if it is a densely wooded, rocky or other wise dangerous environment and they somehow travel 25-50 miles in a day or two and are found in near perfect condition with no signs they were even lost... yeah that warrants a non standard explanation.

That story about the little girl that saw the sun shining for two days really struck me. My sister and I grew up in a house with a lot of woods nearby. I remember seeing a little store out in the woods and would see people going there. But for some reason,my sister and I could never get to the store. And no matter the weather, the sun shone in the woods. I'd think about it every so often and figured maybe I imagined it? A few years ago I mentioned it to my sister and she has the same memories too! I told her I thought I made that up. She was very insistent that there WAS a store in the woods that we weren't allowed to go to. Anyway, the parallel about the sun shining all the time is interesting. Also, this is in the Pacific northwest,so we get a lot of rain here. So we weren't in a sunny all the time place like Arizona.

What do you mean you "couldn't go inside"? I've heard of other stories where people found a house or something in the woods but there wasn't anything when they returned. And locals/ authorities say that none is there. Never sure what to make of the stories. 🤔 Like the one where a boy & a man went missing mere weeks apart in the same area (want to say Roan Mntn. but not certain) & both reported spending time in a cabin while lost. But rangers & green berets that were called in to look for the boy said there was no such cabin where they'd claimed. And authorities kept insisting they were wrong even tho both said it mere weeks apart. The man was found by hikers nude, wrapped in a shower curtain he said he got at the cabin "rambling incoherently". And the boy said he spent time in the cabin with his grandfather - whom he knew to be deceased. Said he "fed him eggs" for breakfast." At one point when he was outside of the cabin, he said he saw his mother & tried calling out to her "so he didn't get more lost" [People wonder what he meant by that if he was staying at the cabin, how could he get MORE lost?] but she couldnt hear him. Did you ever research the area? Maybe you could determine what it was - or perhaps WHEN?... Or if others had experiences in the area similar or different to yours? Did it look old or modern? Did it really appear to belong there or was it out of place? 🕵 Also heard a story of a girl that was 3yo sitting in the treeline of her property near a creek/ river just watching the day. It was sunny the whole time - "or some other bright light"[?- did she say that just to appease because they didn't believe her so she tried rationalizing it somehow?]. But was gone like 17days or something & she thought it mere minutes/ an hour/ so. They searched that area extensively fearing she'd gone into the water. She never noticed them & they never saw her till she got up & went back home like any other day. These stories are so perplexing! Thanks for sharing and would love any more insight you could provide!

I was living in the forest with my family, about 30 miles south of the Grand Canyon, in a sparsely populated subdivision on a 5 acre lot. Weird things happened there. Me and my little brother and 2 friends from down the road were playing on the property as kids when we realized a young girl, about 7, was standing on the other side of the fence watching us. We knew all the neighbors around us, there were only a few, and we never saw her before. And she's alone and we're in the middle of the forest 13 miles from the nearest town. So we walk up to her and ask what she is doing, and she asks us if we want cookies and milk. We asked where she lives and she pointed at my families house and said it's her grandmas house and that's where the cookies and milk are. We told her that's our house and is she sure she's not lost or something, but she swore it was her grandmas house and was asking how we got on the property and who are we. We told her to walk around to the front of the property and we'll let her in the gate, figuring she is lost and confused. She starts walking through the trees and along the fence line to go around to the front, we were at the back of the property, and we cut through the property to the front gate and open it and wait for her. She never shows up. We walk around the fence line and can't find her. We go around to all the neighbors and ask if they have a 7 year old blonde girl visiting or something that they are missing but no one knew who we were talking about. People started helping us try to find her and they called the sheriffs to ask if a girl is missing anywhere nearby but nothing. No one knew a thing about her and only us kids saw her. We tripped out about that for years.

Former Bennington resident here, my grandfather Deacon St. Clair was a local patrolman involved with this case. Behavior from Queenie during the search suggests someone else was at the very least in close proximity to Louis (watching from a distance perhaps?) aggressive barking directed towards the northwest also occurred shortly after finding the boy. But it was never followed up on by additional volunteers / officers... Its a good thing they got to him in time, someone may have stumbled upon him, waiting for their chance.

I feel like any case where a child so young miraculously survives even a few days unharmed is interesting enough on its own without insisting upon adding more interesting or paranormal elements. Yeah. I enjoy these sorts of things more as amazing stories of survival. The interesting part to me is that children really can become lost in the wilderness as quickly as they do, be as hard to find as they are, and travel such long distances across difficult terrain. Some may be kidnappings, but there are so many stories of things happening that everyone thought weren't possible that maybe it's just time we do some studies and adjust our ideas of what can happen in these situations. Might save some lives if we're not stuck thinking that a little kid couldn't get very far when clearly sometimes they can.

Julie, I was thinking very similarly to you, when they questioned why a 3-yr-old would disrobe (but your example made me _giggle so hard I actually _*_snarfled!_* ) I recall being 3 Very Well; 2 weeks after my birth my family moved to _HotAsAllHades,_ MS. When playing in our yard, it was common for my much-older brothers and I to run around shirtless, occasionally running through sprinklers for added relief. I will *_never_* forget that crappy, sticky 👉summer👈 day when our Mom, a buxom lady, called me over to tell me that henceforth I would have to wear a t-shirt with my shorts. Just because I'm a *_girl._* The rebellion and righteous anger that followed is the reason I recall it so well. It seemed terribly unfair, considering my brothers were never given such a sentencing. Mom took me inside our house (which had no A/C and was hotter inside) to attempt to explain the concept that one day I would have _breasts._ I retorted that my chest was flatter than both my brothers. In an _accusatory tone,_ I added that *_my_* chest looked *_nothing_* like *_hers._* "Daughter, you have ... pennies. I can see your pennies; we ladies do not show our pennies." "My brothers have pennies that they show day and night!" *__* "These," she pointed to her chest, "are _nickels._ Your brothers will never grow nickels, but as a girl, someday you will." Just after sundown Dad came home from work, to find Mom cradling her head in her hands. "Hi hon. Seems quiet -- where are the kids?" After relaying the day's events, she added, "The boys are outside, trying to rescue *_your_* daughter. She's shucked off all her clothes then climbed a tree, so now she's over _forty feet off the ground,_ sitting up there in nothing but her panties. Naturally she's now too afraid to climb down, so I sent our eldest up there to get her."

It's called paradoxical undressing and it's often associated with terminal burrowing or "hide and die syndrome". It's a condition roughly half of all fatal and near-fatal cases of hypothermia express. Basically in moderate to severe cases of hypothermia you enter a state of delirium which can include disorientation, hallucinations and confusion. Before death the muscles that constrict your blood vessels to funnel heat to your core give out causing the blood to rush back to the surface. It's like taking a cold shower and then cranking the heat all the way up, you feel like you're on fire. The feeling of extreme overheat in combination with the delirium is thought to be the cause of this behavior. Which would go to explaining why these people are often found naked and large distances away or in strange places in general.

I was raised in Maine, lived there for decades. Hunting, fishing and running around the forests I don't know what Lillian ran into out there in the woods. Many of us know the story of Lillian but don't think it was a Bigfoot,Nor a Bear. My grandmother was Maliseet Indian...no she never called herself native american.. Maliseet Indian. At any rate,She was born in 1914 several years after this story happened However, the story was still talked about for years and the consensus among Many Maliseet was that Lillian had been with 'Gloosklap' or a similar being...not a Bigfoot. Other children had also had similar experiences like Lillian before that. Nope I don't have any testimony I can show you,I can only tell you the stories as they were told to me by my grandmother and her brothers..my great uncles...but take a grain of salt with the stories of 'Gloosklap' my great uncles told me...they just wanted me to stay out of 'Their' favorite hunting spots...and if that meant scaring the hell out of a nephew? I am inclined to believe the "moon as the sun" theory in Lillian's case. I have checked the Moon Giant website for the phase of the moon for August 12, 1897, and it was Full. In the modern world we no longer experience "night" in the way that our ancestors would have done. Masardis, Maine, in 1897 would undoubtedly have been far removed from the light pollution that we experience today. I can attest to this from an experience of a lack of electric light. After Hurricane Katrina, there was no electric light for hundreds of miles around where I live and that very different experience of the night sky was surprising. My home is in a rural area surrounded by some woodland so there was no light from neighbors either. It was too hot in our house so we were compelled to sleep on the floor of the screen porch, and there outside on those apparently completely pitch black nights I was woken up on multiple occasions by bright lights shining: it was the stars. I am still stunned that I could be woken by starlight but it happened, and the moon was dark then. Thus, I cannot discount what Lillian says about the constant quality of light when she was lost in the woods during a Full Moon.

Two things to say. Firstly, thanks for mentioning that people were quick to blame Gypsies and use them as scapegoats. Antiziganism is still all too common in the world. Secondly, about the girl saying the sun shone brightly in the woods all the time. When I was in high school, I used to make trips in the middle of the night to a gas station nearby my house to buy candy and snacks. It was four blocks away, so I would walk there and back. It happened more than once in the wintertime when there was a lot of snow on the ground that I walked outside to head to the gas station and I noticed that it was inexplicably bright outside. Not quite as bright as it would be during the middle of the day, but it looked a hell of a lot like it might be early morning or early evening. The ambient light around me was far too bright for it to look like it was 1:30 a.m. I took a picture of this phenomenon one time and sent it to the weather channel to ask the meteorologist about it and he replied that it's got something to do with refraction of light caused by differing air temperatures. Apparently cold air refracts light differently than warm air does, and if the air temp is different at ground level than it is a little bit above, it can cause a weird effect where light is bent back towards the surface and it looks really bright.

Lilian's statement makes perfect sense if she was talking about the weather. If an adult said ‘I was lucky. The sun shone the whole week I was on holidays.’ You wouldn’t interpret that as meaning night never came, just that there was dry, sunny weather.

when I was 15 I witnessed some very strange goings on in a wood not far from my house in Houston, tx - it was after dark & I walked up on a circle of young women seated around a fire in black robes - I stopped immediately they all looked up at me simultaneously - the hair on my neck stood up and I walked backwards never taking my eyes off of them until the distance was "safe" and walked briskly away - took about ten steps and it seemed like something clicked - I turned around and walked back to the clearing - there was nothing not even a warm spot on the ground where the fire had been. I brought my dog back to the area - she picked up nothing.

I love the Lillian Carney story. It’s so intriguing to imagine the world through the eyes of a lost six year old. It’s interesting that so many people latched onto this case despite the prosaic explanations the newspaper offered. Was the sun really shining for over 50 consecutive hours? Did Lillian really see little people? Was she possibly seeing what her abductors wanted her to see; if she was abducted at all? It’s a story that gives us permission to entertain the impossible.

I was almost got kidnapped twice when I was in elementary school. Once from walking home when school was out. The second time was when playing in the front yard while mom was cooking. My brother of 4 years older was watching me. At the time I was 6 and he was 10. As a parents, I never let my kids out of my sight.

As for Lilian (the 6 year old who said the sun hadn't sit during the 2 nights she was missing), it's possible she just fell asleep before twilight and woke after the sun came up. She was very small and was found 2 miles away, and that's assuming she went in one direction not around in circles, she might easily have just been tiring herself out wandering around.

There is FAR MORE that we humans do NOT KNOW than that we think we do. I think blueberry or berry pickers go missing because when you take from the Forrest the fae often get upset and you get lost. I hike a trail in a place called devils hopyard in Connecticut for 17 years. Never was lost. I went recently and got so terribly lost. It was like the same trail as always but it was like I walked through a portal and a new forest was created as I got lost. It took me about 5/6 hours to find a way back. And I never found the trail. I came out of the forest onto the road way before the trail head. I still can’t figure out how I got lost or the way I came out.

I used to live in The area of Maryland you are mentioning I can confirm that if you were to go missing in that forest on that park or in any of the adjacent mountains it would be difficult to find you unless you made an insane amount of noise. I used to work for the base that is on one of the mountains in that national park and we would do patrols if you even got maybe 10 feet from someone you would lose them in the trees / brush or behind a hill. That forest is incredibly quiet isolated. Even with the homes in the area- if you got lost good luck. Strange people live there along with minimal cell phone service.

Perhaps the solution is so obvious it gets overlooked. Any parents can tell you how children can sleep in just about any position and any place. They also need more sleep than adults. The little girl probably laid down and fell asleep before the sun set and continued sleeping until sometime after sunrise. This is not an improbable scenario.

There are so many cases where children turn up in places people think it should have been impossible for them to get to. Maybe instead of looking towards anything spooky, we should question our assumptions about how far a determined child can travel and what kind of terrain they can cross. I think it can be easy to underestimate children. They have a surprising amount of energy and even quite a young child can climb as well as or better than many adults.

I know it's a horrible thought but when I heard the last story of the little girl found up high on the ridge my thoughts were she was probably small enough for a bird of prey (hawk, eagle) to pick her up and take up so high especially if it baby birds were involved. I ve seen videos of them taking small sheep and foxes. Of course it doesn't explain why she disappeared in the first place. Another thought was as you showed a picture of birds circling I would think a good tracker would follow any kind of trail and anyone familiar with the wilderness can attest to seeing large birds circling bodies of animals so I'm surprised more stories don't say while looking for a child we could see scavengers nearby.

I do recall sometimes snagging a tee shirt or getting the hood of my sweater stuck, but I never full on tore my clothes. Kids are small enough to fit through barbed wire without wrecking their clothes. I just wonder if people aren't giving exploring kids as much credit as they could.
