Bauman's Tale - President Roosevelt's Story Of A Murderous Creature On The American Frontier

Something a little different for the Halloween season!
Teddy Roosevelt once wrote about a unique story of horror that he heard from an old trapper who lived on the frontier. The details of this story resonate with those of similar encounters occurring in the modern-day wilderness. Cryptid encounters also seem to play a role in a small number of bizarre missing person cases, so the implications of this story can be far-reaching. I hope everyone enjoys it.

Fun fact: Teddy Roosevelt had a daughter named Alice, who was 17 when her father became president. She was a rebellious teenager way ahead of her time. She smoked cigarettes, gambled, drove at excessive speeds, had a pet snake, and bluntly spoke her mind about anything and everything. She was politically opinionated and would often butt in on her father’s meetings in the White House. Despite her uncouth behavior, she was quite popular socially. When a reporter once asked Teddy to comment on his daughter’s behavior, he responded: “I can do one of two things. I can be President of the United States, or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both.” 🤣👍🏻 … Alice lived to be 96 years old and passed away in 1980.

@@Justice43211 Some Native American folklore/ oral tradition speaks of giants coming through portals to eat them. I can't remember the tribe but think they were in Arizona or someplace in the arid desert parts of the south or maybe Mexico, they built their homes into the sides of sheer rock faces among cliffs some 80 feet or meters high to try and avoid their assailants grasp. There's no trace of the tribe(s) and much of their belongings were left behind in their houses and laid out like they never left.

"The Long Walk" by Polish Army officer Slavomir Rawicz was a great book. Rawickz was captured by the Russians in 1939 during the Nazi/Russian invasion of Poland and sent to the Gulag. The book details how Rawicz and a group of prisoners escaped a Gulag camp, and went on foot across Siberia, China, and Tibet, finally arriving in India. Along the way they encountered a very hostile group of Yetis in the Himalaya Mountains, but fortunately escaped unharmed. The scene in the book describing this encounter is very suspenseful.

I don’t care what people think about Theodore Roosevelt, when I first heard about him and his countless accolades, I immediately became a fan and respected everything about him. The guy got shit done, and he was very fearless, intelligent, charismatic and tough. The man embodies the heart and soul of a warrior and seen why so many people loved and respected him. Theodore Roosevelt was most definitely the spirit of the United States and a true legend of the 1900’s, despite his legend starting and growing in the end of the 1800’s.

@Lizard King- That’s your opinion, I do value it, and this is where people may have a simple disconnect from what I was really saying. It’s a simple jest of wording that so many people do, and it was supposed to come of as….(example: this one person is great, and I don’t care if many don’t like him, myself and others do and we will look up to them because of the accolades and crazy adventures and feats that they have pulled off, to actually win me over little by little, and even if some of the tales are tall, they still grabbed my attention and put a smile on my face). Nowadays I notice that we all can’t like some things and past human beings despite never meeting them and only hearing stories of them that get us intrigued, without getting criticized for it. I don’t have to love and worship certain historic individuals, but I can be a fan of and respect the way Theo carried himself and some of the awesome actions from the many tall tales he found himself in. If you don’t mind me asking, have you ever been a fan of and respected the actions of past historical figures?? There’s people that respect JFK There’s people that respect Lincoln There’s people that respect Doc Holliday There’s people that respect John Dillinger and he was a bank robber. The reason for that respect is the way they carried themselves and some of the crazy stories told about them that make many people be in shock by what they are hearing about those past human beings and just say to themselves, geez, those guys were real characters huh. You didn’t offend either, it’s all good, I like seeing what others may think. Remember, when I said I don’t care what people think, I mean it as a jest.

@@bamxire8845 yup lol 😂 The man was a character, and it’s little things like that, which tell us the type of shenanigans that past historical figures got themselves into. They were human, just like everyone else, and at times they were pushed beyond their human limits and managed to survive, then also become stronger and more intelligent because of those challenges. The good things you read about could actually be inspiring to many other people who are afraid to stand up to some challenges, but seen that tougher challenges were overcome and can be done. Michael Jordan may have had a psychopathic will to succeed and be the very best at whatever he set his mind to, and to actually see recorded and documented events where he took certain things so personal against his opponents. Even if it’s one little joke comment by another player, coach or entire team, it will set him off to completely obliterate that chosen target. I know that mindset can be toxic for some people, but I find it very fascinating and entertaining. Billy the Kid was another fascinating personality, for good lord, he made a James Bond type pun right before he shot the guy that was guarding him when he was being held by the Marshals and bounty hunters which he was being transported to be hanged by them. I forgot if the guard’s/bounty hunter’s name was Dave or Bill, but right before Billy shot him as he was escaping, he chuckled and said, how’s it going Dave, and then shot him dead. Supposedly people back then said that Dave had it coming because of how poorly and inhumane he treated outlaws and convicted people, and Billy was just getting his own brand of justice against a cruel bounty hunter. Sorry for the long message, I just find all types of historical figures fascinating, unique and at times inspirational with some of the incredible feats that they accomplished.

I saw something similar but smaller when driving down a large wooded lot with a friend in the Houston area. It was like a tiny demon with a long white beard and what I can describe as an old man human face with a total height of 2 feet. The hair was mostly white and covered the entire body, being longer for the beard. The skin was paper white with bluish tint that you could see behind the body hair. It was extremely fast and could stand on its hind legs but then run faster on four legs. It was running through a clearing at night and we caught it by surprise at night directly in our headlights as we went through. Looking back at it now, with the benefit of Google Maps, I realize that was the largest wooded lot for a long while in the city. On the other side of the wooded lot is a old folks home. I didn't see it alone and the surroundings aren't normal for a cryptid sighting. It was in a large city far from large natural areas. Are these natural, alien, spiritual? Was is living off the energy of the old people, was it the soul of a newly departed or a natural hybrid?

For sure there were other motives besides preserving wildlife. If you go to the interpretive center outside of Pisgah National Forest near Brevard NC, you'll learn that homesteaders were kicked off their family land. They didn't give the land back to the Indigenous people who it rightly belonged to.. wonder why.. the parts of Smoky Mtns prohibited to civilians (only Indigenous and Govt can go) hide caves where the "little people" live.... it's also well known that certain areas of the Grand Canyon are blocked off from people traveling there and it's said that's because there's evidence of something the Govt wants to keep under wraps there. I really don't think the Govt cares as much about preserving wildlife as it does about keeping secrets from American people.

Theodore Roosevelt is not only one of my favorite 3 Presidents, he’s also one of my favorite historical figures, with an extremely interesting psychological makeup which also makes reading about him time very well spent. And I’ve read just about every biography about him there is! So, one thing I can say with confidence, after reading all those books (including a few of his own), is that *the reason Roosevelt included this incident in one of his books is bc he believed the incident happened....if he had not believed the old trapper, that story NEVER would have made it into his book.* But TR surely realized that, since he hadn’t seen the incident himself, he would need to carefully choose his words and distance himself a bit, which is what he did. I’m also sure that this wasn’t the only encounter he heard about!

Myself and a good friend of mine who was a hunter came across a giant track in the woods one day, I remember putting my foot aside it (size 12) and it was a 3-4 inch's bigger then my foot. Never seen my friend scared in his life til that day. We were in the middle of the woods on private property and it was just one footprint in sand on a tiny stream crossing. Very odd stuff

Teddy Roosevelt spent a good amount of time at Montauk after the Spanish-American war (Camp Wikoff) ...weirdly enough, the first time I ever saw what I think was a cryptid (Sasquatch or Dogman), was in a place called Rough Riders Road, named after Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, who camped there. They live in waterholes and drown people. No one that's ever seen one has lived, so no one knows what they actually look like. What's even worse is the damn dropbears. When your bushwalking keep looking up... They live in gum trees. As you can imagine, sitting under a gum tree beside a waterhole in the Australian bush can be dangerous.

Horrible creatures exist out there? A shark is a creature that can definitely kill a human. But I like to think that’s just not as terrifying because it’s not foreign to me it’s not intelligent as humans are to know how to go on land and kill us. I feel ambitious to know what waits for us and I’m certain every somewhat brave human to want to continue and expand the human race to planetary colonies would want too and it’s only natural!! Besides I’m certain no doubt that early humans were terrified of the new creatures they encountered like sharks bears polar bears hippos alligators. But these animals we humans can kill with guns and if there’s enough humans then with swords too!!! But if there’s a creature out there so smart that it’d take mabey 10 humans to kill it? Every single time I see this story I just have to listen to it again. Bob Gymlin tells it so well. And my rough theory is that the Sasquatch stopped showing up in the fossil record after they realized that being known and seen by human beings is detrimental to their survival. So that’s when the species began hiding their dead. I’ve heard many stories of the other Sasquatch in the tribe gathering the remains of the dead and carrying them off. Gigantopithacus were last found from ten thousand years ago. That’s a fraction of a fraction of a blink of an eye in archeology. And even then all we ever found was a tiny bit of jaw bone. Not to mention that there are stories of people finding the odd Sasquatch corpse. I remember a group of loggers who found a Sasquatch corpse that was crushed by a falling tree. In these extremely rare instances the government has covered the truth up.

@@mobydickswife9512 It's not necessarily the government who hides things. It's a religious mindset that hides things mostly through ignorance. Evolution is like a religion. People who believe in it usually don't do well hearing about undiscovered species in their backyard. Pride acts like a blindfold, people think they know everything and have lost their sense of childlike adventure. They don't think there are mysteries still to be solved. We're all told we're here by chance and dinosaurs died millions of years ago. That's a pretty ugly thing to promote and it stagnated people's vision. I enjoy reading old accounts of dragons and sea monsters. Reminds me that just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean it isn't there. I don't know exactly how old the Earth is, but I do believe the world is one of a kind and put here by divine grace. It's one big miracle. I believe the men who said they saw oversized lizards and giants. I believe the old stories of a global flood. Makes sense according to the fossil record, why isn't that a theory being offered to the youth? I believe there are many things still alive and roaming the woods undiscovered, why aren't people being educated on that? It goes back to a religious mindset and a stubborn ideology. People laugh at this stuff. They laugh at bigfoot and make people who've seen him ashamed. Modern science and the current popular theories don't allow for unbelievable things. It only allows things within its tiny narrative of our existence. I used to think that way, until I saw a mountain lion in the woods of West Virginia. They say there are no mountain lions there. They're wrong about so many things.

Sasquatch doesn't murder people. The fact the tracks looked more bear like is homage to a dogman or skinwalker. Sasquatch make people disappear, they leave no evidence. A dogman would definitely do this.

If you really think that sasquatch dont kill people your crazy. The Dennis Martin case is a perfect example of a sasquatch not only kidnaping a child but they never found so much as a shoe lace or drop of blood. There are literally hundreds of thousands of missing persons cases in known sasquatch habitats like Yellowstone and glacier. They are not peaceful, they are not human. They are wild animals and wild animals can ALWAYS be trusted to acted like wild animals. Even a deer will attack people.

@@silverwolf851 not sure if you read my entire comment...actually Im pretty sure. Making people disappear without a trace and biting them savagely in the neck and leaving their bloody corpse to be discovered are drastically different.

you got rogues in every group/family/species, this one might just have been an psycho. also, i'm not sold on dogmen even existing, so have trouble taking your alternative.

I ordered a copy of that book. The chapter it was in was called, "Cowboy Country." The publisher must have thought that Roosevelt was getting his leg pulled cause the chapter has been cut from the original book.

I dunno that I'd agree that frontiersman weren't superstitious. They sure are the origin of a lot of tall tales, crypto sightings and good luck charms/rituals for a group that's supposedly above all that. Living a hard rough life has never kept people from being superstitious; usually it's actually directly the cause for it. When one bad storm or a string of bad hunts come together that can end you you're going to be clutching at whatever your brain can make sense of to see a pattern in how you can influence or read the events, even if it's ultimately not connected

Good job! I noticed one inconsistency. when they first saw the tracks they said it was a bear walking up right. I primate track and a bear track are easy to distinguish, especially for a trapper.

@@joeyskywalker1322 fair enough. Humans are primates. I’d imagine they’d have seen a human foot print before. Maybe he just assumed they were bear tracks because it was dark and they were large tracks.
