Frightening Encounter in Old West MONTANA | Teddy Roosevelt Story 1892

In 1892, a book was published titled The Wilderness Hunter, written by future president and avid sportsman Theodore Roosevelt. It told of his life and sporting adventures in the American West some eighteen years before becoming president. In the book, one story stands out among the others and it’s one that you might not expect to find in a book written by the future president.
The story was told to Roosevelt by a man named Bauman, who was referred to in the text as a “grizzled, weather-beaten old mountain hunter.” There are no other details about Bauman except that he was of German heritage and had lived all his life on the frontier. The old mountain man tells the future president that he and an unnamed partner had planned to trap beaver in a remote section of the western Montana wilderness near the Wisdom River (now the Big Hole). Other hunters avoided the area after a trapper’s mutilated body was discovered sometime earlier by a group of miners passing by his camp.
Still, the two men were not to be deterred by the stories told of the area and ventured deep into the remote Montana backcountry. There they made a quick lean-to shelter, and with few hours of daylight left, made their way up the river to scout. They returned at dusk to discover their cover destroyed and their belongings scattered around the campsite. Thinking it was a bear, they cleaned up, and Bauman set about making supper. His partner left to investigate some tracks, and what he found could not have been made by a bear, but something that walked upright on two legs like a man; but no man could have left those prints.
Keep Hiking!!

The Colonel himself had an odd experience in Washington state while on an excursion there. He heard a scream-growl that he couldn't identify and which, apparently, freaked out his Indian guide who insisted that Roosevelt and himself needed to be 'anywhere but where they were'.

This is a terrifying story. I love the fact that it was so long ago and President Roosevelt saw fit to include it in his book. The two men in the story were mountain men, expert hunters and trappers. So many similarities in what they told about and the experiences these days. interesting. Thank you, Chris. And yes please to multiple stories a week!

First of all, my hats off to you for camping out in the woods all alone. Hard pass for me. I’d never leave the camper. Second, if i’m ever found in that situation, by no means would I EVER separate myself from my partner and wander off into the woods alone after encountering something that obviously doesn’t want me there. Good story. Much appreciated.

I've been camping and fishing on Wise River many times. As a MT native, hands down my favorite part of the entire state. Almost feels like its own national park. The Pioneer Mountains on both sides of the valley are magnificent, lots of old abandoned mining history at Coolidge, the Crystal Park (dig for your own gem stones), and nearby Bannack. Also a great nearby ski-hill, and the plateau at the top of the pass genuinely resembles some parts of Yellowstone (minus the geysers). The area is a fishing and hiking mecca. Highly recommend visiting if you're near the area. Hope you're well Chris, it was indeed a very frightening story!

Checking YT first thing on Sundays for your latest story, Chris. Love them all! I'm sure there are endless untold stories like this, especially from the past. I'm very curious what stories the Native American community have. When my son was driving across country with a childhood friend after his time in the Montana Conservation Corps, they went to the Grand Canyon and spent a few days with the Native Americas that lived there. They told my son and friend that there are space ships/sauces that are hiding in the canyons. They also said they had told the police several times, but they ignored them. I've heard that the Sasquatch are aliens from another galaxy. Things that make you go hmmm!😆👽

I was born in Butte, Montana and grew up in Browns Gulch. The Big Hole and Wise River area was and still is impressive. So many memories and laughs camping, fishing, hunting, and exploring that area when I was young. But there was this one time in 1979 Fourth of July camping up at The Little Joe campground area and we heard something coming from high up a drainage and it was getting dark. The sounds it was making was nothing I’ve heard before and haven’t heard since. Even my entire family who was with us and and they are outdoors people couldn’t explain it.

LOVE IT! I spend a lot of time in the back country of the Big Hole drainage. Hunting, hiking, fishing and mt biking. To me it's always been a unique slice of Montana. Never had any Bigfoot encounters but there's definitely been times where I've got the feeling "Hair on the back of my neck" to move on and not loiter. One time, a friend and I were working our way up to a park above 8,000' and while in some thick timber we heard a very loud growl right near us. Both of us froze and looked at each other then looked everywhere we could see without moving to locate the source. Eventually after not seeing or hearing anything else, we decided to head back down the mountain. Still to this day it perplexes me as to what made the sound. My best guess is that it was a bobcat in the trees above us.

The wilderness must have been terrifying back in the 1890s. I read a book about George Washington many years ago. He would go out on horseback with a friend and explore around the shennandoah valley and blue ridge mountain area. Often times they would come across native Americans. His friend was able to communicate with them but Washington made no effort….he considered them below him. The book was very interesting as it went into a few wilderness excursions that Washington went on.

I remember coming across this story in Roosevelt's book Wilderness Hunter. Still one of the best tales I've read, and I frequently go back to read it again. Masterfully told.

-> Ditto!! Am glad that Chris told this account; I have the book, & yes, it's a good one!! Liked & Shared, so people nowadays know about it, even as more proof for the skeptics.. Divine Angelic Safeguarding, & Many Blessings, ALL!! 😻🖖🏼📖🙌🏼🙇🏻‍♀️🙏🏼🕊️👼🏻🌄

Imagine how scary it was back in those days 1860’s no flashlights. only campfire, lanterns, or create a hand held torch. Could you imagine, you wouldn’t even be able to shine a focused light beam on whatever was out there.

Thanks for sharing. Teddy Rosevelt is remarkable. This story is scary. It’s great hearing stories from the 1860s. Fascinating!! So sad his partner was dead.

I believe there's a correlation with the inception of the National Parks and the Sasquatch. Chilling story. I'll definitely check this book out, it sounds like a good one. Thanks for sharing! 👍👍

-> Totally Agree!! I have this book, & had stumbled upon Baumann's account, & am glad that Chris told this one.. Liked & Shared, so people can be aware of the historical account, as more proof, especially for the more skeptical ones.. Probably was a rogue Sasquatch, one of the aggressive types.. I envy the snow. I live in southern Massachusetts snd no snow at all and only two days of temps below freezing, actually enjoying 40 to 60 degree weather right now.

Wow. One of my faves of yours so far. What makes it even more fascinating to me was the time in which it took place. I haven’t been up the Carson Pass all winter but it looks gorgeous up there. Thanks for all the great content as always!

You've had me wondering if there are stories from mountain men of old about sasquatch. Then you share this story, relayed by Teddy who is also my favorite President! 🧸 🇺🇸 What a cool story! Sounds like that creature maybe took revenge for being shot by the other trapper... Maybe he was hurt & ticked off... R.I.P.
