Octopus Reacts to Traffic Cone - Episode 1

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Welcome to an all new series on OctolabTV. Octopus Reacts!
Watching an octopus react to an everyday object for the first time is always interesting. It's fascinating to watch them explore new objects. We thought that this is something our viewers would enjoy and we'll surely learn more about octopuses by watching them react to these objects for the first time.
We'll be posting an Octopus Reacts! video every Sunday at 2:00pm Eastern time. We're also going to need your input on the objects in question so get your thinking caps on! We can't wait to hear your ideas for future episodes of Octopus Reacts!

    IMO, they are not "colorblind", they simply perceive color in a more advanced way than we yet understand, almost like a separate sense. "Octopuses, squid and other cephalopods are colorblind - their eyes see only black and white - but their weirdly shaped pupils may allow them to detect color and mimic the colors of their background, according to a father/son team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University.Jul 5, 2016" news.berkeley.edu/2016/07/05/weird-pupils-let-octopuses-see-their-colorful-gardens/

    "It compels my attention but I do not understand it!" Watching him (her?) examining it on all sides reminds me how unnatural just the geometry of our manufactured objects are- perfect cones are uncommon in nature, yet here is one. With no only a color that is almost unheard of in nature, but also the retroreflective band. The "hugs" seem to be our friend here confirming it really is the same shape all the way around, it isn't moving or anything. But the most interesting part is when he's scratching his head with two tenticals at the end, as if puzzling this thing out. I do wonder- are any of the humans he observes prone to head scratching while thinking?

  • @billwhipple9039

    My first thought is to try different yard ornaments but then I wondered what an octopus would do with chicken/duck eggs. Would it crack them open? Would it eat them? Would it act like they were rocks? Would it care about them at all?

  • @DaveyLuvGravy
    @DaveyLuvGravy3 жыл бұрын

    It sure looks like he's trying to imitate the cone at 2:20. Very interesting introduction style. Spread out on the wall to observe, then get close in a small rock shape then copy the object. I really believe that the octopus is far more intelligent than we give it credit.

    Pretty sure the colour of a threat for an Octopus is simply darker colours, they go darker colours to indicate agression. The only sign of stress in gave off was going dark at the very end, but judging by the timing I think that was response to bonking its head unexpectedly on the glass.

    @@benmiller5015 i wanted a bird of prey and I think an owl swooping down is the best looking for that. And I also wanted an animal that dominates its domain. I prefer the look of the owl over the Eagle. Octopus because of their intelligence. My name is Albert and I already have Einstein just below my neck. So either one i get will end up being named Einstein. I'll have my current tattoo incorporated in the design.

    You should have placed the cone sideways. I guess the octopus would hide himself inside the cone.

    I love how s/he spends at least 1 min trying to look the cone up. Ego..much? Edit: Then, 2 mins 20 seconds later s/he is all like: "I'll stick to you. You're safe." >_

    I thought the octopus was going to tip it up and go inside of the cone.

    What's with sticking an arm into its gills near the end? Scratching an itch perhaps, like we would a finger in the ear?

    Hi Everyone, does anybody know the piece of music in the background? Sounds like a trio. But who plays?
