Octopus VS Unsolvable Puzzle - Behavior Observation Experiment
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
We've all watched in awe as these intelligent invertebrates solved puzzle after puzzle. We're always surprised at how effortlessly they solve almost every challenge we put in from of them. But what if we set up a challenge that is impossible to solve? How will our octopus react to an unsolvable puzzle?
We took some crabs and sealed them in a plexiglass box. We made sure that Michael, our big powerful octopus, would not be able to open the plexiglass container no matter how much force he applied.
We ran this observational experiment for nearly an hour before we gave him his treat. The final 15 minutes were entirely uneventful. Our octopus ignored the box with the crabs after having failed to open it during the first 45 minutes. We wondered if he would also ignore the second box that contained his treat due to the fact that he was unable to open the box with the crabs. He didn't.

I was expecting him to bang the box against the walls of the aquarium in anger.
This is friggin hilarious!! Since he/she couldn't figure out how to open it immediately, he/she instead measured their front door and then measured the box, hoping to hide the box for further examination.
It's incredible to see that the octo has only made bite marks around the lid where the box was obviously sealed, rather than the solid sides that came with the box from the factory! Unsettling and sublime place for him to focus his efforts...

Octopus says, "Hey, where's that hammer you gave me a couple episodes ago?" Actually, that might be an interesting test - a sealed container and some sort of tool he needs to open it - and see if he can figure it out.

That Octopus was like... can't get that one opened, and moves away like; "I'm gonna Order some Take-Out".
It’s interesting that their eyes never move in their sockets. They don’t look at things per se, they just stare at ..something..
@aidanmcferris3004

They move, just not in their socket. That entire area that their eyes are set in moves. It gives the appearance that their "brows" are actually raising and lowering, lending a sort of humanistic expressions thing. You can't always see it, but you can particularly see it when directly behind or in front of them. Take a look at the video at this link...I believe you will get a hilarious perspective of what I mean! kzread.info/dash/bejne/m2d8lcSDp92cZaw.html
I want to know wether the octopus understand bouyancy and gravity and have an idea for an experiment: Take a transparent cylinder, with a hole in the side of it. at the bottom of the cylinder there is floating balls that fit through the hole, on top of them there is a sinking plate, as wide as the inside diametre of the cylinder. On top of the plate is a treat. The octopus mus take the balls out to make the plate sink in order to get to the treat. another idea is to design an expreiment to see if th octopus can balance a scale with weights and/or floats.

Ravens can put rocks into a tube to psh up the water level until the treat rises high enough to grab. Another channel trained a cuttlefish to wait so it got its favourite food rather than grab the first thing. That’s something most humans can’t do.
Crabs must be like: thank goodness the box doesn't open! 🥺
No tease octopus! Octopus want treat! And man, were those crabs freaking out, too.
I didn't know if I should feel bad for the octopus not being able to get his dinner, or the crabs staring into the belly of the beast not sure if they were going to be dinner. Conflicted!
Wow. Incredible power. Michael seemed really ticked off though, determined, frustrated - he's going to get those crabs! Till he gives up. Amazing to watch.
He just invented 1000 new ways of opening boxes, hilarious some of the things he tried.
Amazing that the octopus was so persistent and creative in it's efforts to open the box -- I actually feel sorry for the octopus -- but a valuable experiment none-the-less
Someone needs to send an octopus to space. See how they act without gravity.
Those crabs are totally traumatized after that!
Hey random thought. we have seen that an Octopus can learn to open boxes from mimicking another Octopus. Can they learn from watching a person in the same way? Can they learn to use a tool? < lock and key maybe?

They can watch a video of a person pulling a pin/pool noodle to open a box, and learn to do it. They've already run that one!
Control Crabs: I'm so glad we're in the control group. Experiment Crabs: The WHAT group?!
He wasn't going to ignore the second box since it was clearly open.
And here I was expecting him to dump it out of his tank in a fit of anger.
Michael looked a little frustrated and desperate at one point. H'angry Michael !
The second try was so cute. The stealth attack attempt.
Since an Octopus's brain is in its arms, Do you think those 8 arms have 8 different personalities? Like, is one the leader? Might 1 be more scared? Hesitant? Curious? Impatient? Angry? Psychologically scarred from a previous bad experience? However you look at things, though, those crabs are going to be suffering from PTSD!
@TheBestofJuan
3 жыл бұрын
2/3 of his neurons lie in his arms but they also has brains as well in their heads. However you're right that each leg essentially all think separately. I don't think each leg has emotional feelings independentally from on another, they all just feel the environment to help the octopus's decision making. I could be wrong tho

They might just be like the nervous system in the human body, all communicating in some point (if I’m not wrong that would be the actual brain) so the hole system functions together. In that case I don’t think they would have different personalities in they arms, but may be they have.

When I watch them exploring something it is as if all eight Arms have a crowd round the subject and then the whole organism, all eight Arms plus central brain, goes away and goes into a huddle and has a bit of a conference for a few minutes and then comes back. now I know that's a bit anthropocentric but who knows
This octopus looks really big. I’m glad he got to get something anyway.
You can see his visible frustration in his sudden color and texture changes when he tries to charge the box and is holding onto it trying to figure out what to do. I feel sorry for him. Seems kinda mean.
I don't know if crabs can normally feel terror or not, but I bet those 3 did.
He's soon cute and more intelligent than alot of people!
So now we will see your frustration at being unable to outsmart the octopus .
Shhhh. If you listen closely, you can hear the rare sound of crab laughter.
whats funny to me is the color of the octopus when demonstrating emotion of frustration. I find it fascinating that's its a red'ish or darker hue which is also the same color of anger despair or frustration represented in human culture.
I really wonder if there were beak marks on that box from the octopus trying to crack it like the crabs inside lol.
He's going into his house to invent a laser to open the box and then turn it on his tormentors.
Awww...you’re just gonna make him 😡 angry! Fun to watch, tho! 🙂
Ppl sayin they feel bad for crabs is stupid, nothing different then feeding mice to a snake, plus crabs r straight up like dumb as shit

Did anyone notice if the puzzle is unsolvable how did they put the crabs in there?
Its interesting that he doesn't quickly launch himself at the crabs beak first like he did in the video with the fake crab on the screen. He approaches it much slower and often even goes tentacles first.

New to the channel, do you ever put octopi in the same scenarios they have already faced? Do they learn how to beat challenges long term, or once they solve a problem they forget everything they just did? I've seen experiments with mice where the first time they take a while to solve a problem, but the next day they do it in a fraction of the time.

Why did you switch boxes. There was a shrimp or something in the second box. Was this box not as hard to open? So that he could be rewarded after trying so hard and failing with the crab box?

I'm intrigued that he seems to always hide his treats when he gets them (at least in the few videos I've watched). Is it like a snake, and he's hiding the vulnerable moment? Or are the suckers right there at the base that much more dexterous than the others?
