    I feel like people fail to realize that hoarding is a form of OCD. OCD has so many different forms it’s not just about cleaning. These people are both suffering from the same thing, and exposure therapy is one of the most effective ways to cope with it. The cleaners are not crazy. The hoarders are not lazy. Some people don’t seem to understand that. Also the dog stole the show. What a good doggo

    Erica Machado OCD is where someone repeats rituals/patterns to an unhealthy level. It can be many things. Cleaning, hoarding, you can be OCD in relationships, or counting things, checking locked doors over and over, it’s basically endless the things that can be considered OCD. My sister is OCD in a eat where she is paranoid of intrudes. so she will spend the entire night checking all the windows, doors, and checking on the family members over and over and over. I am also OCD, specially relationship OCD. I check my lovers social media, phone and even his game consoles to make sure he isn’t cheating, even though he’s never cheated before and I have no reason to believe he is. People with OCD are always just looking for some kind of reassurance.

It took me a while to get diagnosed because I thought if I didn’t say things the “correct way” where they felt right that it would kill the people in their sleep. Also if I did something to one half of my body I would have to do it to the other. Including burning myself or breaking a bone I would have to try to break the other arm or make sure it hurt the same hahah. Our brains are weird! Thank god for therapy!

  • @TheZoeBird

    @TheZoeBird

    I think the messy owners can't imagine that anyone could possibly enjoy spending any time on cleaning, and don't really perceive any benefit to putting in the work, so they think that anyone who cleans a lot must be miserable doing so (and in the cases of the OCD cleaners, they aren't necessarily wrong).

  • @MissJessyeNorman

    @MissJessyeNorman

    They feel defensive--and they didn't realize that dealing with it in real life would be far harder than anything for which they'd tried to prepare themselves. The cleaner's illness is subconsciously considered a moral good by the audience, because it superficially appears much closer to the truly healthy ideal--where people keep their homes tidy. It's just like Bulimia/Anorexia vs, Compulsive Overeating Disorder. People tend to be far more kind, compassionate towards and wanting to understand why the sufferer is in that state, than people who suffer from eating disorders in which the sufferer becomes overweight, where people tend to be extremely nasty--because we still assume that the former is better morally, as their illness more superficially close to a healthy ideal of relative slenderness, and our cultural obsession with unhealthy thinness. Thus, the hoarder feels very judged, and as if it's unfair that those who are just as ill as they are, are still put in a position of moral authority. PLUS, often the OCD cleaners, don't realize how harsh they are when they come in. They don't say anything mitigating, they just go in full bore, directly saying how awful it is. Not many of us are used to criticism unfiltered in that manner, and certainly not in an area that we're very ashamed already. Let alone knowing it's going to be broadcast on TV. In spite of this, they still should not. However, this show is lopsided in a way that does put the hoarders always in the defensive position. Why aren't the hoarders ever inviting to stay with the OCD sufferers, to help them?! Why isn't it an EQUAL TRADE?!

    I agree with everything you said, but a reverse format of the show (where the hoarders stay with the OCD cleaners) wouldn't work. The OCD cleaners need exposure to dirt and "germs" to desensitize themselves to it. But, even that is kind of swept aside and the whole point of the show seems to be "haha look at this filthy person."

    i do ebay and have an abundance of stuff, but i keep my bathroom and kitchen clean, saving garbage and not putting things where they go is completely out of control, its a lag or abuse to self and everyone around you, its a servere sickness, they need to be trained how to be a regular person who values themselves, hard situation and not ok, i have OCD but it is slightly alot of craft making and ebay stuff, boxes for shipping but no garbage and clean kitchen and bathroom a must, working on making each room to perfection, this sickens me and they keep shopping, i took 1/3 of my moms stuff to my house and its hard and it is affecting me and i am watching this to discust myself and seeing i am just been depressed and getting my self proper in my dining room, its a ebay room, no garbage in the house show them how to use a garbage bag, not ok, sick sick sick you have to be nice and help them very important, why are they this out of control and sick, how do they spend their time, why dont they love themselves, sick brains and sick lives, makes your life not worth anything, and people are grossed out and rightly so, teach them how to clean and classes in motivation, not ok their homes can be taken away for this, hurry get em fixed

    I love this lady and think this is one of my favorite episodes. "That's what unshed tears looks like." My heart breaks for her. She's a very caring person - she helps the homeless, she works with children in her job, I'd want to be her friend. I'm so glad the OCC came to help her and I hope it made things better for her. She's very brave. And to all the people who criticize, all I can say is that all of us have some area of our life that needs improvement, she just happened to share hers with all of us. I think that is incredible.

    Enz Di Cristofaro I don’t feel bad for her! I’ve been cheated on by a men. Men I have children with but I would NEVER ALLOW my children to live in an unsanitary house! There is NO excuse for that! Your child is living in a house with 💩 and rotten food bc of a man?! Nope 👎 She should be ashamed of herself. She said her house has been like that for years, so her son was still a boy! It’s her responsibility as a mother to put her big girl panties on and provide her son with a safe home!

Everybody goes through bad 💩 that can f*ck them up in the head! That doesn’t give somebody a pass on taking care of their kids! So you stfu! DSS would’ve seen that, they would’ve taken her kids, and given her an option to clean it up or lose them. Not ohhhh you have a sad story, never mind providing your children a safe place to live! If she knew she mentally couldn’t handle providing them a safe clean place to live, she should’ve sought mental help so she could! BOTTOM LINE you don’t allow your children to live in feces!

Her son grown up in a dumpster and he is become lazy and unable to clean his own mess, this is no place for a kid. Sadly, I had a cousin, who in her 20's was raped by a man who came in through her apartment window. We worked together and she always had a smile for everyone. Time went on and she rose up the ranks to the head of human resources and bought a house. A big cape code with attic and basement. We had lost touch in those years, sadly just seeing each other at weddings and funerals. Because of the rape, she became a hoarder, blocking every conceivable entrance to her house. Not only was her house full to the brims with only a pathway to her living room, she also had a storage unit full of things. Then she started to fill her car with things and people at work, who really loved her, wanted her to go for help. I don't know if they knew that she only slept sitting upright on her couch? Well, she took their love and help for her as an insult and an assault. I know I offered to come over with her sister and help, but she declined. She also had two little dogs who slept on her lap while she slept. With the stress of her employer wanting her to seek help, she died in her sleep, on the couch with her two dogs. At work, they had known something was wrong when she did not show up for work, as she never missed a day's time. She had died of a heart attack. RIP Shirley.

The dog will actually appreciate it as they are naturally clean like any animal and don't want to foul their den. But you will have to wash the floor under the pads. Good luck.

I use to work in a donation shelter for a charity thrift, and we had to throw away any donations that wouldn't sell fast enough- honestly that was devastating. I don't know why we think we're better than trash, I think a lot of fixing the waste crisis and over consumption crisis we see today comes down to facing our trash and learning that objects are valuable beyond their price and treating them with the respect they deserve.

    My heart goes out to this woman. I truly think that our environments are an extension of our deepest selves. She's so hurt, so wounded, and she knows it and admits it. Props to you, Britta, for being so brave and tackling this huge part of your life!

    I am sure our environment is an extension of out inner state of mind! I have struggled with severe stress for years, and my place was always chaos. But as I started to declutter, my mind also got a lot less burdened, and I managed to deal with a lot of my issues. It was a long road of course, not all at once like this, took me a few years. But clean surroundings really does make a difference.

    It basically is depression, indeed. They just don't care anymore, they've given up on life. It's especially sad when it happens to seniors. Of course, the reasons for hoarding are different for everyone (some hoard to try to control the people around them, isolate them and keep them dependent).
