I appreciate how you showed the tweaking process instead of just blowing through an easy example that doesn't reflect the majority of more complex removals.

I'm a musician, running a KZread channel, I totally suck at editing but with your videos I feel like I'm getting better at it bits by bits. Honestly, the way you can explain everything in such a simple way so even unexperienced people like me can pick things up is amazing! I didn't even know I can remove things from my footage this simply until today, thanks for the upload! Love your work, keep it up! :)

The part of swithing to keyframe in the tracker blew my mind... I never understood how to make the tracker work when something was moving in front of the subject... If you ever want to make one video dedicated to more advanced tracking usage (for magic masking, for hiding objects, for blurring faces, etc) would be awesome. Most of the video tutorial I ever saw use just simple footage with very little movement and where the subject is always in frame and never gets covered...

Another really helpful video, thank you. I do landscape videos and often want to remove unwanted objects/people, especially from drone footage, and was struggling to get good results with the Object Removal. This helps, and demonstrates that a more suck-it-and-see approach is required.

Never saw Cullen out of his league before… absolutely fascinating. The biggest surprise was that prints are better today than they’ve ever been and yet now we live in a world where it’s very difficult to actually see a real print. I remember going to the Arc light years ago and seeing “there will be blood “, film, print, and it was glorious! Also, his use of nuke over resolve… wish you had asked him more about that.

The Patch Replace can be done in the Free version of DaVinci, using masking and some node adjustment setting that I keep forgetting what it's called. You track the footage in Color grade window, then move the mask to the 'copy' location and adjust tilt & pan of the node into the 'paste' spot.

I've used the Paint node's clone tool to remove big objects, like people. It's a little tedious because you have to paint it out by hand, but you can get really good results depending on how much time you want to spend on it.

@@stehume I have the Studio version, but I still prefer to use the paint cloning method. You have so much more control to get it looking just the way you want and it works really well. With the AI stuff it's very hit and miss and there's not much you can do about it if it does a bad job of figuring out what to put behind the object. Casey Faris' tutorials on cloning are where I learned about the paint node cloning tool.

Thanks for the comment. Yes it was his channel that i was watching yesterday, the spray bottle on the fireplace, which then my youtube home page got so many other recommendations, i mix and match tips from each videos and some of the things i do work lol What i think would be good in the studio version is that with magic mask you also have the option of adjusting nodes (the little dots?) i was watching Casey latest vid this week about masking and asked it you can do that but you cant, now if you could the time it would save would be good i think, You say about Ai being a hit or miss there is another channel on here and the guy makes films, he asked what peoples best tool is or would be and i said the magic mask if i had studio and he came back and said yes its good but there are a lot of other ways of doing a better job its just that its quick. cheers sorry can i ask, do you use davinci for professional work or as a hobby /you tuber vids, been debating weather to get studio version for a while @@Tekkerue

@@stehume You're welcome. And yes, the spray bottle video was the first video I learned from, then Casey showed another method in his video Change a Clock with VFX in Fusion which doesn't freeze the frame so the areas you are painting from continue to change, which is very useful if the lighting changes like it does in his clock video. Between these two methods, you can get great results. There are some very good Studio only tools, Magic Mask is a huge one. Depending on what your needs are there is also voice isolation, speed warp for slow motion, noise reduction, depth mask, relight, etc. One great thing about the Studio version is that the current model is to provide all future updates for free, so Studio is a one time cost. Blackmagic has the right to change this in the future, but so far every update has been free. I've seen people on the Resolve forum talking about using it since version 8 or 9 and they have never had to pay for an update. Another thing is to be on the lookout for is a deal to get a free Speed Editor with Resolve. I got this deal from Markertek almost 2 years ago. I just checked a couple places and this deal is not currently going. I don't know if it will be available again, but it's something to look out for especially with the holiday sales. I actually got Resolve because I want to make promo videos for some music apps I'm developing (like a metronome) but I haven't released the apps yet, so at this point I'm entirely hobbyist. My sister and I have a shared channel where we make fanvids for movies and TV shows called VidDuality, which we can't monetize because we don't own any of the content so it's just for fun. The very first project we finished using Resolve is called The Last of Grogu where we removed Ellie from The Last of Us and replaced her with Grogu from the Mandalorian. I used Casey's paint methods to remove Ellie and used the Magic Mask to cut out Grogu. There were some very complicated scenes to remove Ellie from, but I was able to do a pretty convincing job using Casey's paint methods.

Always learn something small and niche with your videos... Timeline in colour page is something I had never used, will be helpful because when you add an adjustment layer over the timeline it defaults to that clip, which is super annoying. Timeline may help with this! TY

If you make a Compound Clip you could put your sample footage at the end of the timeline to sample from. Then you'd cut the clip in your main timeline so the sample footage never shows in your video. There might be a better way to do this, but I think that would work.

Patch replacement can work only on simple backgrounds that is easy to clone. On complex backgrounds with a lot of different textures, moving objects etc. it is useless. Also, it can work where you have no or very little camera motion. All of these examples are objects on clean, uniform background. On complex, multicolored backgrounds with a lot of moving objects this method is almost useless
