Obeka, Brute Chronologist Deck Tech - A THEFT IN TIME // Commander Legends // EDH // MTG

Ойындар

This is the first in many deck tech centered around legends from Commander Legends. Oketa, Brute Chronologist is the one I was hoping to open and open I did! I’m so excited to brew a deck that cheats end of turn triggers like the original Time Stop. This deck is also about coping creatures and stealing things from the opponents. Let’s see how much thieving and copying we can do!

    Hi @LEONARD HILL, I thought Final Fortune had the same oracle text as Glorious End, but it's slightly different: "Take an extra turn after this one. At the beginning of that turn's end step, you lose the game." You can activate Obeka anytime during the extra turn and it will work and the trigger will not happen. However, you can just kill Obeka before the extra turn.

    @@vex_mtg if they try to kill obeka during your turn before the extra turn, you just end your turn in response to the removal spell and go to the extra turn, then end that one too as usual. The only way you loose with your own final fortune is if they have two removal spells and respond with the second one to you e ending the first one

    You can tap obeka in response to the removal. As long as you have something else to either untap obeka or protect from a second removal, you're probably fine.

    Hi @Brian, that is correct, those are some of the ways to save yourself. I just didn't want to jump through those hoops to save 3 mana on a time warp. I believe Obeka can be good in cEDH where there's more counterspells and cheaper interaction.

    Zealous Conscripts does not work with Obeka if I am correct. You cannot exile the until end of turn on that card because it happens at the same time you cast the effect to gain control of it. Its all part of the same effect. Its not like for example Slave of Bolas that has a separate sentence that triggers later on during the end phase.

    The thing is if you go with final fortune you have to have a competitive list, for example after Ad nauseam resolving (or if you know anyone has interaction for your Obeka) they can try to remove Obeka but they won't succeed for many reasons as : - Deflecting swat - fierce guardianship - Flusterstorm - Force of will - Pact of negation - And tapping Obeka Also, you can do all of this again with Underworld breach which stays because of Obeka exiling the trigger of sacrifice it. If you are in another strategy with Obeka then final fortune isn't that good. PD: I liked the idea of Minamo in Obeka

    Hi @Oconner7, thanks for the insight, yeah I see Final Fortune and its ilk being used in more competitive lists because of a larger protection suite you listed. I do think Obeka is strong in cEDH, which I do play sometimes, but I usually lean my deck towards the casual side. Thanks for stopping by!

    Well said. The only thing I need to add: it doesn’t need to be ‘free’ premium removal to protect Obeka. Holding on to a Counterspell or Arcane Denial will ALMOST always be enough on top of Obeka’ ability.

    Hey Vex! I'm a new comer on your channel. I loved how you presented the cards! Seeing the actual prints (and some proxy I assume) really made me want to go play it. So I did! I've imported your list into Moxfield and I'm ready to play it! One card I thought might be interesting to play is Rakdos the Showstopper. For such a fun yet powerful commander like Obeka, a janky goofy card like the Showstopper peeked my interest. Any thoughts on cards you could see being added/removed or maybe flavor changes you might have wanted but didn't feel they were all too powerful?

  • @vex_mtg

    @vex_mtg

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi @William Porter, thanks for the support! All of the cards I show you are real cards, no proxies (Hence why I don't have deck tech until after pre-release). You can remove some of the mean cards like Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Opposition Agent, It That Betrays, and Agent of Treachery. I really like stealing my opponents' cards. I also added Thieving Skydiver because its a pet card of mine that I think is really good in EDH, but the deck doesn't need it. You can basically sub out most of the fatties for other more fun fatties like Rakdos the Showstopper. I originally had the extra turns theme but didn't want to lose to my own cards because my playgroup would do that to me.

    @@vex_mtg Awesome! I like the stealing subtheme as well, however I think subbing in more abusable cards with the recursive themes like ETB effects (rakdos showstopper, molten primordial which also is stealing stuff on etb)

    Question here. I understand the end step is a phase. But how does 'end of turn' work? Like Ideas Unbound, if it's until end of turn and you end the turn...

  • @vex_mtg

    @vex_mtg

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi @Mike Butler, I believe the end step is part of the "ending phase" (I know it's confusing). Cards like Ideas Unbound have been errata'd to say "Draw three cards. Discard three cards at the beginning of the next end step.". So what happens is when you pass through your second main phase to your end step, the Ideas Unbound delayed trigger will go on the stack and make you discard 3 cards, at that point you can end the turn and remove the trigger on the stack. I recommend checking out the Oracle text of some of these older cards as their wording has been re-templated. Thanks for checking out my video!

    Building Obeka without the final fortune combo is just wrong. The risk is part of the fun. Plus isochron is great with mana drain or vampiric tutor. I think I'm avoiding reanimator when I build Obeka, there are just better and more interesting things to try with her.

    I feel like you shouldn't be trying the the final fortune until you've reanimator'd their removal to exhaustion with feldon and goryo type copies of Jin-Gitaxis and Co., not to mention bashing them with their own best guys with the plethora of available Hijack-style spells...and while you milk their hand for removal using your bulimic graveyard, you slowly stack up your drain/pact/force/counterspells and wait....then isocron scepter + final fortune for infinite turns and THEN use that blue thickness to keep the lady safe. Or yeah, greaves or whatever too. I have to run Glorious End, it's in the title.
