Oak TV Cabinet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Building a made to measure TV Cabinet from American White Oak.
Also a look around my new planer-thicknesser which turned up halfway through the project.
Plus a bit of woodturning interest right at the end.

    Absolutely beautiful work! Wish I was half that good. One of my favorite woodworking videos on youtube. I want to build a custom TV stand and was looking for ideas when I came across this video. I will save it and watch it every time I need some inspiration. Thanks for putting this up and I am also glad you took the extra time to film it.

    Todd, Unfortunately as this was a one-off project which needed to fit in a defined space, I started with rough sketches which were modified as I went along so even if I had kept them, they would not be presentable as a build plan for anyone. Sorry but thank you for your interest and your kind comments.

    Hello and congratulations for your good job. I woudl like to know if you make the mortises on a drill or if you have a mortiser unit? Also did you notice a difference between making the tenons on the table saw and on the band saw?

  • @PeterWoodbineWoodturning

    @PeterWoodbineWoodturning

    6 жыл бұрын

    azerty Thank you for your comment. The mortises were made on a mortising machine. With regard to the tenons, there is not much difference between the table saw and the bandsaw mainly because my table saw blade has angled teeth. If it had straight teeth, the tenon would be much cleaner. As it is, the bandsaw is much quicker once the shoulders are cut.

    Hi Kevin, thanks for your interest and your comment. The table saw is a Sheppach ts2500 which is probably now between 15 & 18 years old. It has an aluminium table, side extension on the right and a sliding carriage table on the left. Newer models now have a cast iron table but I've never had a problem with my saw. A new one with cast iron table would probably cost around £2000 but you can pick up second hand aluminium table for £500 - £600-00.

    So beautiful wow! Its such a rewarding work. I am installing a new kitchen soon and I want an island made of oak. But I want it “white washed” but not in a farmhouse way more like between modern and traditional, so more of a smooth look. Do you have any experience with what are the steps needed to achieve that? Like what kind of stain, paint, wax you would use to achieve that? I don’t want it to become yellow with time...Thank you Peter😀

    Hi Jessy, Unfortunately I have no experience with the finish you refer to and would not wish to lead you in the wrong direction with a guess. I just searched " whitewash finish on oak island" on KZread and it came up with a few videos that could help. Good luck when you go for it and thanks for your comment and interest in the project.

    Subscribed! Great build.... thanks for the video. I’m about to build a similar tv stand using white oak. I really want to keep the natural beauty of the white oak as possible. I know no matter what finish I use it will affect the color of the wood, but want to minimize as much as possible. Do you mind sharing the finishes you used in this project? I know you said high performance, but could you provide exact names? Thanks in advanced!

    Hi Daniel, Pleased that you liked the unit and enjoyed the video. Makes it all worthwhile making the effort to film the build. The finish I used was - Polyvine wax finish varnish which you can get from Amazon, Axminster or even Tesco. To avoid darkening the wood you should use the Clear Satin product. I have used this several times and furniture made 6-7 years ago is as good as new. The directions say 2 coats are enough but I usually do 3 coats on the main unit and an extra 4th coat on the top. It does darken the wood a bit but I think it looks better. There are a few product videos out there if you search Polyvine. Good luck with your build.

    I'm curious as to why you'd go through all the trouble to straighten the edge of that first board on the table saw like that. Since you were taking it to the jointer anyway, why not flatten one face, then square an edge to the flat face on the jointer, then square the other edge at the table saw?

  • @PeterWoodbineWoodturning

    @PeterWoodbineWoodturning

    4 жыл бұрын

    Lenon Kitchens, If you look at the start of the video you will see that there is a considerable bow in the board. Such a bow would be difficult if not impossible to take out on a short bed jointer and even if it was possible it would take several passes. It was much easier on the table saw with a large support area including the outfeed table and was done in one pass. Thanks for your interest.

    Mats Bjørnstad, Thanks for the comment. I have found the Record Power planer to be very good and enjoy using it. The only issue I have found is that the blades are quite expensive to have sharpened when compared to a circular saw blade. Otherwise no problems so far. I hope you are pleased with your new planer when it arrives. NB - Very heavy lump of machinery - you will need assistance to even get it off the pallet.

    Unfortunately I do not have plans for this project. It was a bespoke one-off to fit a certain size opening and I just made rough sketches to assist me with the build. Once the length and width were determined to fit the overall gap, the centre sections were sized to receive games consoles and Sky boxes etc. and then the outer doors sized equally to fill the remaining gaps. Glad you liked the project and thanks for the comment.

    Beautiful build sir. Forgive my ignorance, but was it really necessary to joint the edge after you had already essentially done it on your table saw with the sled? Or was it more to just clean it up?

    Sorry its been a while but it took some time to find my notes on this project. I'm not too sure how much help this will be as even I can't decipher some of these rough notes. Corner posts are 60mm * 60mm. Top and shelves are generally from 19mm finished boards. Perimeter of top is 60 *30. Top front rail is 50 * 30 and bottom rail is 30 * 60 in opposite orientation across the corner post. Other rails and stiles will need to be generally from 19 or 30mm stock to suit your overall finished size of unit and separating panels. Hope this helps.
