Nyngan, NSW, Australia, Severe Storm, Nice Lightning, 19th November 2023

Ғылым және технология

Tough chasing out in remote NSW. Poor road networks can see you driving an hour or more just for a change in direction to vector a storm. This was the case with the first storm of the day which was probably briefly severe south of Walgett, NSW with no road options. I headed back south to Nyngan, NSW and was lucky to pick up up a decent storm. If you ever chase in far middle north of NSW just be aware of Kangaroos, Emus, Feral Goats and even Feral Pigs. Also included is a short clip from next days storm at Hillston, NSW

Thanks - I had some really good timelapse taken on a Gopro of the drive between Nyngan and Cobar, but frame rate did not like going from 30 to 60p. Learn't lesson for next time

@@MissStabby Lol inland NSW has done well, can't say the same where I am. Not a single proper storm since April :( December 1st looks dry for most places, chances of non-severe storms that aren't worth to watch. Better off this Wednesday for most spots.

In May this year i saw a storm similar to this in the distance with a funnel cloud coming down it. It had to be tornadic as the funnel cloud was going up and down before roping out and large hailstones was reported with 70mph winds

Lovely base on the Nyngan storm, and the circulating dust was interesting. Nice to hear some fairly close thunder too. Hopefully this weekend will be worth a chase to central NSW - cloud cover/rain areas look to be the main concern. As for wildlife on the roads - my last time driving through crookwell/Tuena I had sheep/kangaroo/wombat on the road with some deer and goats nearby….

I cannot chase too far before next Thursday as my car is well overdue a service. Would risk it in a old Commodore or ford, but not a 4cyc

Very beautiful Thunderstorm you posted a video after my brithday when I turned 18 years old. During the evening of 18 november on my birthday the coastal area of Constanta and Tulcea counties were hit by Cyclone Linus wich brought heavy rain and very strong wind gusts of up 120 km/h wind that took on the appearance of hurricane and for these areas that were hit by Cyclone Linus, nowcasting code reds of heavy rain and storng wind gusts of over 100 km/h. And after this Cyclone Linus, the coastal of Constanta and Tulcea were devastated, including the city of Constanta. And the moment with the Cyclone Linus when it hits the city Constanta with heavy rain and very strong wind gusts I posted it my KZread channel. In other areas of Romania, Cyclone Linus that occured on my birthday brought heavy snow and storng blizzard to the Mountains and on my birthday Cyclone Linus brought heavy snowfall with isolated lightining to the cityes of Braila and Slobozia.

Hi Michael you are getting a awesome start to the season amazing footage as always. We didn't have any luck last night our road network is pretty bad here and we got stuck behind the storm and couldn't catch it hopefully next time, safe chasing out there mate

Sad to hear that you could not get onto your storm. This season appears good, but way too many kilometers and areas that have road networks as sparse as yours. Initially I went north of Nyngan and its 100-150kms between road options, unless you own a 4WD and want to risk being stranded by flash flooding. The native and feral wildlife is very thick as well. Emus and Kangaroos, Feral Goats and Pigs. You just do not night chase out there unless you have heavy duty bull bars. Feral goats seem to have the best road sense, they just munch away on the verge and do not panic. Kangaroos as you probably are aware from your area are the worst - just plain dumb road sense.

Yeah we had heaps of coats top last night they do stay away from the road. But we also had sheep and kangaroos walking over the road up north they don't have any fences so they are free to walk where ever they want. At least you are getting some good storms hopefully it gets better for us soon

On my birthday on november 18 2023 in Bucharest where I live me, Cyclone Linus brought consistent rain all day until the live and low clouds stratus and nimbostratus. And those form the National Meteorological Administration have issued a yellow and orange code of rain, snow, wind and blizzard. Inclunding in the areas hit quite badly by Cyclone Linus, namely the coastal areas of Constanta and Tulcea and the Western bazin of the Black Sea the day after on Cyclone Linus on my birthday the weather was clear and beautiful on november 19 when you caught this beautiful Thunderstorm with and beautiful and strong lightining in Australia where you also live ⛈️🌩🌩❤️

Awesome video MT! You did well to get it up online so soon. Glad you got onto that Nyngan storm in time! That dust was interesting and something I never noticed at the time. Your audio is way better than mine, wind noise is so bad on the 780 I had to use my phone for audio.

Every time i see a lightning strike i say 'Boom!' then count how long it is before thunder as it that's in indicator of how far the centre of the storm is. A couple of times in life i think i've been in the centre of them as i've been yrds away from a cg lightning bolt followed by the largest thunderclap ever. One time it sounded like a bomb had gone off and blew out my left ear drum.

Every year I manage a bolt with 100-200 metres. Closest was many years ago lightning struck a tree that was 30 paces from me ( i stepped it out). There was no argument about it striking the tree as it caught fire...lol
