Slow Moving Lightning Storm with ASMR thunder. Southern Tablelands, NSW, Australia, 10th Dec' 2023

Ғылым және технология

A severe storm show in the Riverina on the 10th December 2023 was too far for 1 day chase (10-12 hours drive + chasing around storms). I targeted an area closer on the Southern Tablelands of New South wales (NSW) and was lucky to get an isolated cluster of slow moving storms near Bigga, NSW. These storms appeared to be developing on a wind and temperature convergence. SE winds and 27-28C (80-82F) meeting warmer NE winds with 35- 37C ( 95-98F), but not a dry line. The Bigga, NSW cell then drifted slowly south to between Crookwell and Boorowa, NSW - of course in the crappiest section of that 80km road stretch of nothing. Road network here is sparse and I could only get within 20-30kms (12-19 miles) of the thunderstorm .Structure wise a 2/10, but lightning was quite nice, and due to the distance and lack of wind noise the thunder was almost a constant low rumble (ASMR stuff)

    Thanks, that Crookwell to Boorowa road is OK for 20kms either side, its just the 45 kms in the middle that is hard to get views and side roads. None the less in watching this storm for an hour, maybe 2 cars passed, bugger all wind as well.

    Thanks Mate ! prefer my storms closer, but no road options to get closer. Should count the positives however, no rain, no wind, no car nosies.

    Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. I always advise that Australia is best for its beaches and scenery (not as good as Rockies in USA of course), storm chasing....well...our very best season still would not equal your poorest, just so dynamic over there. Regards

    Not a bad result… I was thinking about chasing but as you said storms would move south - and the last thing I wanted to do was end up near Tumut late in the evening with work the next day.

    Can understand that ! I had commitments at home next day so Riverina out of question. I passed a few hours at Sallys Corner waiting for something closer to pop.

    at 2:14 looks like some smoke haze mixed with the clouds?

    I think it was just the angle of the sun and that area may have also been the convergence line where two different temperature air masses mixed.

    Absolutely beautiful mate! Just had a awesome bunch of storms roll through Sydney last night... super sudden without much notice from the BOM n stuff, did you get a little bit of those storms aswell? once again, this is one of my favourite videos, long and stunning, great great video

    Completely fluffed that one ! Took off after that isolated eaarlie cell at Bundanoon, which died. Then tried to intercept the line west of Goulburn, which was outflow winds and lightning embedded in rain, then the clear skies to the east exploded and it was chasing it all the way back home, but always behind it

    Nice work, what lightning trigger are you using on the still camera?

  • @ozthunder

    On my 90D I am using a MIOPS remote plus, it works OK during daylight, but soon as its dusk it just pops on anything even with the sensitivity dialed right down to 1 from 100.

    Did you have another camera with a trigger running?

  • @ozthunder

    @ozthunder

    Yes, but its not the best trigger. Works OK during daylight, but too sensitive from dusk onwards, fires on any flicker, even with sensitivity dialed right down.
