Briefly Severe Thunderstorm, Possible small wet microburst. Windellama, Souther Tablelands, NSW

Ғылым және технология

On the 3rd January 2024 I pursued storms on the Southern Tablelands of NSW, Australia. Initial storms in early to mid afternoon all formed north of Goulburn, NSW and were very ordinary to say the least. They would look OK for a little while, throw out some well spaced random bolts then turn into persistent rainy mess. Meanwhile south of Goulbrun remained in a sunny hole (suspect a drier NW wind area ), but this did give some hope for higher energy. Around 4.30-5.00pm a Jerangle (very high ground often on sea breeze front) special moved near Braidwood, NSW and become severe warned. I intercepted this storm near the small town of Windellama, NSW. Bureau warning did state a wind gust just over 100kph (60mph) was recorded at Nerriga, NSW - about 20kms in a straight line SE from my position, probably from a microburst. Storm had a very dark base for a while, but eventually became a bit of an outflow mess. Around sunset I hung around at Marulan, NSW as my gut instinct felt the show was not over yet. Around 7.30-8.00pm another severe storm developed almost on the same track as the first, but this time back building slightly westwards. Intercepted this new line at Tarago, NSW with brief heavy rain, moderate wind and although lightning was active, it was very non-photogenic.

Microbursts might have been the reason Nerriga recorded a wind gust of 100+ km/h from a rather okay looking storm on radar. Pretty rubbish in Sydney those couple of days, looks like no proper storm activity for the next 15 days. Was looking forward for that storm south of bowral to hit us, but dissipated.

Models want it clear from S/SW late, may get some action on that clearing line, and after dark if its 200kms away sprites may be an option
