High Based Dryline Storm with Lightning, NSW and Western Downs, Queensland, Australia, 4th Nov 2023

Ғылым және технология

Storms developed on a very distinct dryline on the Western Downs area of Queensland and Northern NSW. Dew points around 15-16C (60F) to east of dryline and in minus figures to west. Initially storms were slow moving and high based but contained a moderate amount of lightning. Late in afternoon the storm briefly developed slightly lower base and started to surge eastwards.

    Learned that the Camcorder MTS files at 30fps do not mix well with the Nikon 60fps, when rendered video at 60FPS you would get flicker when video swapped cameras - got around it by adding 1 second long transitions. I like the ease of camcorder, but its had its days. May use the little micro 4/3 as a hand held back up as it does same FPS as Nikon

    Looks like that time of year when things are hotting up in Oz whilst here in the UK it's that time of the year when things are cooling down. In average we're getting daily temps of 9-11c

    We are struggling with drought through most of eastern Australia. You may notice how barren the fields look. Thankfully 30-34C is just normal for where we were chasing and not the dreaded 40C plus.

    The humidity was terrible as the plume of air came from the Sahara desert. We kept all of our curtains closed, didn't go out much and fires kept breaking out.

    Nice chase. Have you thought about doing storm chase Slow TV? I often watch real time dash cam videos to relax in the evening. It would be good to see some of the back roads you travel down, particularly the famous Painters Lane 😂

    Been a pretty boring season since what, April? Finally looks like November is starting to see some "good" convective activity. Hope for some good ones this Thursday in Sydney basin, but looks a bit messy for proper stuff.

    The beginning kind of reminds of an invisible snow capped mountain. What are exactly are Dew Points? Can you feel them?

  • @ozthunder

    @ozthunder

    8 ай бұрын

    Dewpoints are a scientific way of saying humidity, but they help a chaser assess better the available moisture for storms. In simple and perhaps slightly unscientific terms a dewpoint is the temperature that if you reduce the real temperature to, the air becomes 100% saturated and you may get dew on surfaces. For example the day we were chasing had temperatures of 34C with dewpoints of around 14C (humidity around 30%), so to get 100% humidity you would need that 34C to be dropped to 14C. Higher dewpoints = more moisture for storms, but too high and you may get a cloud fest instead. Thanks for watching!

    Storms love air mass boundaries. A dryline is where there is a sudden decrease in air moisture (humidity) and often an abrupt change in wind direction. The boundary often sparks storms.
