NYERERE PART 4: MWALIMU NYERERE SAYS CLANS CAN’T DEFEAT EMPIRES

Like a skilled surgeon, Dr. Nyerere dissects the problems of the South and warns that unchecked privatisation is another imperialist tool to prolong exploitation by the wealthy North.
Addressing NRM leaders 33 years ago, the revered Tanzanian statesman said the South could not beat imperialism as long as their basic unit of organisation was still their primitive clans.
OwanaPaedia believes Mwalimu Nyerere’s lecture to be as important to NRM and Uganda today as it was on 17th July 1988.
Special thanks to James Magambo and PPU which captured this treasure and there is more here when you subscribe.

A true African. He sacrificed us for the continent future. At home, he integrated social groups and, despite the fact that there are more than 120 ethnic groups, we are free from ethnic violence. He deserves being a founding father. Africa as a continent should not forget men of this caliber!!!! Though dead he speaks loudly!!!

Imagine his inteligence and ability to explain and foresee things in multitudes during that time!!! Listening to him awakens some dead spirits in our minds. Very intelligent and a way ahead of his time. Continue resting dear father. What you feared the most during those times is happening today in our African continent. Our leaders are just prefects infront of the northern leaders. They are totally dominated and the north bosses us. We borrow everyday from the north. Our economy is chained top to toe. Malcolm X was always right, and today the same words he said about revolution are heard in your talks Sir!

The recognition is for the southern side of Africa to work together and not only together too but very trategicaly. First off all each country in the southern has to be self sustainable in any capacity they can, before joining together as a southern, at all levels as much as possible, to start to take the process of controlling the terrible habits of fro the Northern. That has to stop . It may take some time but the road has to take extra steps at all levels. All the pillar has to be very top like never before. YES

True ... there's a need to unite as a country or even regional block for better socioeconomic and sociopolitical engagement. But it does not mean doing away with the smaller ethnic units. The ethnic units can and should co-exist along the larger national / regional blocks. These ethnic units, in Uganda's case for example, serve a function of self-identity that is key to optimum social health. Why do we have to throw away the baby with the bath water? Even empires that Nyerere talks about, they have social units that feed the need for self-identity. We already have them in form of ethnic units ... we don't have to throw them away and then struggle to re-create them through the nation. Let the nations / regional blocks serve our economic and political needs. And leave the clans alone to serve the equally important need of social self-identity. There's no human society that doesn't have clans. Unfortunately, people assume that only clans along ethnicity are tribal and therefore wrong. Even in empires, you have clans organised along socioeconomic status, leadership hubs, elitism, etc etc. There's an urgent need for the modern African to understand the difference between the rationale for a modern African state (economic and political development) and the rationale for the existence and maintainance of tribal/clan/ethnic units (unique social identity whose powers of cognitive diversity should be tapped into by the modern African state, instead of trying to kill off this diversity).

Identity. All human beings are human beings, that is enough identity. The other issues around identity is childish superstition. Clanism, tribalism and other smaller divisions are vicious forms of marginalization.
