NWOBHM some cool Heavy Metal albums!

1980s Heavy Metal records! Some cool NWOBHM albums.
Not all ten star records, but each one is fun and cool in their own way. As always, sample them first before buying. My opinion is only that.

Hey Johnny! Love your take on this genre of metal! I grew up in the 70's in Jersey as a die hard KISS fan. Discovered metal in 79' with the Judas Priest UITE live LP, introduced to me from one of the older kids in the neighborhood. I was hooked! That led to Sabbath, Rush, UFO, AC/DC. Found underground metal when my friend discovered college radio station, WMSC in Montclair in 1982. DJ Gene Khoury was a frequent visiter to Jonny Zazula's Rock N' Roll Heaven flea market record store in Old Bridge, NJ, and was buying new metal music constantly. We loved it all! It was a very exciting time! Love the Neat Records shirt!

Hey brother! Thanks for watching! Enjoyed reading your comment! Very cool you were there pretty much from the beginning! I think you were a few years ahead of me. I liked KISS as a kid but I didn’t hit the more underground stuff til the mid 80s. I really didn’t appreciate UFO til the 90s. Now they’re one of my faves. That’s awesome you went to Zazula’s booth in NJ back in the day!! I appreciate your story and contribution here!! Sorry for late reply! Have a good one! Cheers, Jon

Excellent and interesting video, this was my era, can remember getting a neat records compilation free cassette tape back in the day with a great batch of tracks from a lot of the bands you showed, would also add the first 2 Demon albums, Saracen debut and Praying Mantis Debut. Love nwobhm.

Thanks for watching Stephen! Very cool you were there in the beginning!! Right time and place!! I think that Neat cassette might have been the 60 minutes plus compilation with a silver/gray cover. Very cool!! Yeah, I could’ve showed Demon, I did a full video on them and Witchfynde awhile back. I don’t have that Saracen record! Wish I did! Praying Mantis is a good band, I think the album isn’t as good as their singles, but either way, cool suggestions! Definitely appreciate your comment! Sorry for late reply!! Cheers, Jon

some great choices (plus the standard mandatory ones), I consider Loose 'n Lethal a 10 star record, but that's cos (for me) it checks off all the boxes in what I want in a NWOBHM LP I love Demon Pact, I've had the Release from Hell CD that High Roller did for several years now, at the time I got it along side Scarab's Rolling Like Thunder, between the two there, the Demon Pact was the favorite, not to say that the Scarab was bad, but that the Demon Pact had more guts, it was more of what I was looking for. man, even when you showed the Venom records, the Artillery still ends up being the Heaviest record of the bunch, one of my favorite Thrash albums. great video for those who are interested in the NWOBHM and are curious to know where to look and what to (maybe) start with.

Hey Ben!! Hope you are doing well!! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!! I appreciate it! Yes the Loose n Lethal is an excellent NWOBHM record! Same with the Demon Pact. I do t have that Scarab. I do have a repro single by them. Can’t remember exactly how it sounds. Obviously you know most or all of this stuff! I was trying to show some basics and go a little deeper for the guys who are not that familiar with it. Artillery are a Danish band. I had no idea! Someone corrected me in the comments. Oh well!! Haha! Have a good one!! Take care!!! Jon

I have always been a fan of Neat Records. Such a cool label. Such a cool jersey. You are wearing it well. You know I kind of like the albums that are not tens. Great showing Jon. I love that you showed the Artillery. I would like to see their EPs collected and put out. I think when you look at their 3 EPs/demos between 82 and 84 you could count them in NWOBHM and they were thrash before anyone was talking about the Bay Area. Love these videos man and thank you for sharing your passion. You summed up many of those classics (for us og headbangers lol) they're great because of their historical significance but realistically maybe mediocre to some. It's interesting that the genre is a singles genre and that there really isn't a killer from start to finish LP to hold up as THE example of a killer full-length NWOBHM (or "nuh-WOBB-im" as Aaron likes to say) record, outside of comps. For being underground-punk-adjacent-working-class which seems like a can't-miss formula, it's just.... strange. You gave me lots to dive into though - got some streaming to do. Cheers! Tom

  • @bipbopboom

It does seem strange that there is that many great NWOBHM lps outside of Maiden, Saxon and Def Lep, but we’re dealing with a few hundred small bands spread throughout the towns of Britain. Most with little money and label and press connections. Very unfashionable. Compared with the first three years of punk rock., the punks were the height of fashion and trend. They were mostly located in the city centers with lots of press and records labels. Even with that advantage to the original punks, there was a good chunk of great 76-80 punk lps but they still were dwarfed by the thousands of punk singles. Also keep in my these young metal bands were competing against Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran, the new wave and post punk movement. The original punks had no modern competition at all except for the legacy acts. Thanks for watching Tom!! Have a great week!! Cheers!!!

Thanks for watching Guz!! I appreciate it!! I’m happy for all the reformed NWOBHM acts, but I seldom keep up with any. I feel it’s a time and a place that can’t be recreated. That being said, I never stopped keeping up with Saxon and Motörhead all through the 90s and 2000s. Glad you dug the bands I showed. No surprise of course. Haha! These are some classics! Have a great week! Cheers, Jon

Really cool showing, loved Maiden, Venom, Def Lep's first AngelWitch, Raven. I'm guessing you do but do you have the St. Valentine's split EP with Girlschool/ Motorhead? And are you a fan of Accecpt? This video really takes me back. Thanks

Where is saxon, blitzkrieg and borrowed time(diamond head)

I completely forgot about Saxon when I did this. I think I mentioned that in the description or comment if I recall. Blitzkrieg didn’t have any full albums out until 1985. I didn’t want to pull Borrowed Time. I figured Lighting was enough. Editorial decision! This wasn’t supposed to be a complete discography. Just a video for fun because someone requested it. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Jon

What no Demon - Night of the Demon 🤔

@@graycoll5783 thanks for watching! No way is this video close to complete, I neglected a bunch of records I’m sure!! Yeah, no Demon in this one. Night of the Demon is a good album, but I feel like the cover is the best part and makes the actual music seem like a let down a little bit. Don’t get me wrong, I do like Demon. I made a video exclusively about Demon and Witchfynde a while back. I think it’s numbered VC 35 if you care. Thanks again! Cheers, Jon

Didn't know may of those. Incidentally, just yesterday evening i was thinking of getting some Tank album as they have been just reissued. Any recommendation? I have a triple cd comp of early NWOBHM Winds Of Time which has some of those bands you showed. I think it's enough for me. I do like some rawness, but basically i want to have the feeling of having a producer in helm so that it don't sound like your neighbor trying to come up with a song in his basement. Pasi

Hey Pasi! Thanks for watching!! I like the first Tank lp best, Filth Hounds. But the first three are great. This stuff might not be your style as most of it is rough and underproduced. Lars Ulrich put out a nice double album in 1990 which is a great overview of that era. Called NWOBHM ‘79 revisited. It might be pricey these days though. But that’s a good way of having the best of that stuff with only one album. Best of luck!! Have a good one !! Jon

Anvil are Canadian. Great band for sure! But not British. And of course this is not a complete list by any stretch, just a video of recommendations for a friend who asked. Thanks for watching!! Cheers, Jon
